We offer a RURAL, rustic camping experience. Our property is off-grid thus we cannot offer you any sort of facilities or services at this time & your cell may not be 100% useful. We chose Outpost in our name because we believe it provides an accurate description: a remote, isolated station, settlement, or camp located at a distance from the main body.
Our property is 7.4 miles down a dirt Indian Route through a significant wash and while 4 wheel drive is ideal, you can make it in nice weather conditions without 4 wheel drive. Keith’s sister made it in her Chevrolet Sonic, for example. Large RVs may scrape along the way; we did with our 40' fifth wheel.
Our 60 acre property offers a unique experience for those looking for a place to unplug and explore with plenty of privacy and room to roam. You'll enjoy incredible views of the Painted Desert, Gray Mountain, and the San Francisco peaks. The night skies will be unlike anything you’ve seen unless you have been in the middle of the ocean with no light pollution.
Some important things to note about our property:
Our property will always and forever be a Safe Place for all people. We hold no prejudices regardless of race, ethnicity, or creeds. Our guests will always be respected, loved and welcome and it must be that way with other guests.
We are a clothing optional campground, which means you may be naked on our property.
We are pet-friendly. We have two medium size puppies. Let's ensure our furry friends have as much fun as we are having by keeping them on a leash and we clean up after them. We also wouldn't want them to chase away the wild mustangs, which are beautiful to see in full gallop.
NOTICE: As a desert location you may encounter wildlife (nice and not so nice) while on the property hiking around. We have seen pacific gopher snakes, non-venomous snake that eats rodents and has similar markings to rattlesnakes, which are also present. A triangle head means venomous. Listen carefully while hiking around.

Back to basics beneath endless desert sky. Hike giant rock sculptures, gather petrified wood, maybe find the hidden pond or seasonal Little Colorado to splash in. Powdery views of the Navajo Plateau and snowy San Francisco Peaks stretch across the horizon. Nights bring incredible stars, silence, and total peace.
This place is called “Stone Soup,” named both for the geology and the folktale where everyone brings something to create something greater together. The hut was built with love during musical campouts. Recycled materials from nearby building sites may sometimes be available first-come, first-served, but please expect nothing beyond open land and sky.
There are 40 acres to explore and camp on. You can drive around the property in a regular vehicle and find your own spot. Camp anywhere away from the road or across from the hut for at least half a mile.
If you use the hut, please leave it and the land better than you found them.
The vision is simple: adventurous, creative, nature-loving kindred spirits gathering in the “stone soup” spirit, bringing what they need while sharing what they can. You’ll need to bring in and pack out everything, including water, food, bedding, and trash. There is currently no outhouse, though dunes provide some privacy if needed. Wind can pick up, so car camping is recommended over tents, though RVs work well too.
At the moment this is an isolated, wild campsite with no running water, toilet, cooking setup, or supplied firewood, though fires are allowed and you may find wood farther down the road. The photos are outdated and may show amenities that are no longer there.
Directions: From Flagstaff, take Highway 89 north toward Cameron. After Gray Mountain, continue a few miles to mile marker 461, before Cameron and before a large pump station. Turn right onto the dirt road directly across from mile marker 461, just before a yellow school bus stop. Follow the main dirt road for a little over 7 miles, keeping right at the fork. Stay on the biggest road, which mostly goes straight. At one point you’ll pass through fencing on both sides.
The hut is very hidden from the road. After just over 7 miles, look for tire tracks veering off to the right. Turn there. As soon as you leave the main road, you’ll immediately see the hut.

Disclaimer: I live in the northeast US, so Arizona generally looks like Mars to me. But Painted Desert was absolutely gorgeous! I had site 5, which had a great tucked away feeling with awesome views of the sunset and the San Francisco Peaks. 100% highly recommend. Just be prepared - the only resources provided are a pit toilet and a bundle of kindling.

Clove and Keith are wonderful hosts who purchased the property back in October of 2025. Since that time, tremendous progress has been made to fulfill their vision of what the property should become. Visitors should be aware that it is a work in progress and, as such, there are no developed amenities aside from the outhouse. This property provides solitude/serenity for those who seek it and wonderful views of the night time sky given its remote location. Firewood was provided at the site prior to my arrival. The hosts were respectful and thoughtful throughout my stay. I would not hesitate to stay again in the future.

I absolutely loved my stay at this campsite. If you’re looking for a place that feels untouched, peaceful, and deeply connected to the land, this spot delivers in every way. The pristine views of the Painted Desert alone are worth the trip—every sunset felt like a private show as the sun’s rays bounced off the distant cliffs, intensifying the desert’s vivid colors.
What truly sets this place apart is the privacy. There’s no traffic noise, no crowds, no interruptions—just quiet. The kind of quiet you don’t realize you’ve been missing until you’re wrapped in it. Nights were still and peaceful, with crystal‑clear stars scattered across the sky.
Nature trails are carved into the rugged, yet smooth red‑rock terrain, and exploring them quickly became my favorite part of the stay. I could pick any direction and start walking, and the paths would naturally lead me into a new small adventure—winding through high‑desert scrub and along wind‑carved cliffs rising on both sides of the arroyo that cuts through the property. These cliffs, shaped over millennia, form sweeping overhangs and curves that look almost deliberate. The place feels ancient, sacred, and completely unforgettable.
If you’re seeking a campsite that offers solitude, beauty, and the complete freedom (clothing optional) to wander through landscapes shaped by time itself, this place is it. A rare find.

This was such an amazing private camping experience, everything about it was gorgeous! I would recommend bringing everything with you on the first trip in as it is as rural as they advertise, and a trip back out would be lengthy. There was amazing walking trails and I can't wait to make another trip out to see how much they do with this property. Stunning night sky, gorgeous rock formations, wild horses in the distance, it was perfect!

I did an SUV RV camping on site and it was very peaceful. I walked around in the afternoon and was able to see the west side of the Painted Desert and I noticed that I was smiling. Clove is always very welcoming to the site and they are working to upgrade areas like creating a trail on the property. I took it in the morning and had wild horses greet me. Thanks Clove and Keith!

I loved the quiet solitude of Clove and Keith's land. The sunsets and sunrises were beautiful. There is so much to say and enjoy about their land. I saw wild horses running across the plains. The landscape and peace that I encountered was worth the drive. I would defiantly go back and looking forward to it!!

We absolutely loved this campsite it was extremely private and remote. If you are not looking for a 1 hour off of the highway dirt road trek in just be aware. BUT if you are looking for 40 acres of expansive desert to explore nearly all to yourself this is the place for you ! Clove and Keith just bought this property and did a great job welcoming us and making sure we got settled okay. Overall we had a quick but great stop here feels like youre on mars.

Outstanding stay!!! A couple important notes. First, Google maps was on point, Apple Maps didn’t understand the assignment. Second, you must arrive before dark because of the landscape. That said, Clove and Keith went above and beyond to help me arrive and get settled. Perfect for stargazing and hiking while enjoying the rock formations. If I wander back this way I’ll definitely stay here again.

With no road noise and no artificial lights other than a couple on the property this is a great location to view the stars and enjoy the quiet of Northern Arizona. Plenty of room to walk about and enjoy yourself with no distractions.
