RV camping in Alaska

If you want to experience the vast Alaskan wilderness but prefer a few modern conveniences, RV camping is an excellent option. You don't necessarily need to own your own RV to go cruising around in Alaska, as plenty of companies offer camper vans and RVs for rent so that you can simply fly in and pick up your temporary home on wheels. Much of Alaska is public land, and boondocking is popular, so you're unlikely to find yourself in a situation where you have nowhere to park. Alaska state parks, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the US Forest Service, and the US Army Corps of Engineer all manage RV-friendly campgrounds, and there are plenty more private options, both in and around cities and in more remote locations. Just be aware that most campgrounds and RV parks in Alaska are only open in the warmer, brighter months of May through September.

Pinochle Trail goes north into the backcountry for around 12 miles and joins other trails. Pinochle trail is a section of the ancient Knik - Nelchina Trail used by natives, trappers, miners and hunters for eons. It traverses the natural route from the Matanuska Valley up and over the mountain range into Copper River country. Hicks was one of the early guides who had a cabin at Hicks Creek and served with U.S. Army Lieutenant Joseph Castner to brushwack a trail northwest for Captain Glenn in 1898. Described in his journal as at "Tale of Hardship and Suffering" they ended up eating their mules and shoes before reaching their goal far to the north. Today we use these trails with relative ease compared to the old timers but the scenery and mud holes remind us of what they went through.

Now a song bird sanctuary, with trails, lawns, gardens, trees, hay fields, and a private beach, cabins, a clover camping meadow, it was also once part of an original Alaska pioneer homestead. Although an organic farm, with hay fields, pastures, farm buildings and raspberry patch, it is also the home of hundreds of songbirds, moose, coyotes, wild hares, flocks of sandhill cranes, two sweet Morgan Horses, and an assortment of chickens. I love sharing my farm and home with travelers, and visitors seeking peace, nature, wildlife, walks on pristine beaches, and connecting with nature, in a real Alaska, original, and non touristy setting. This property has three different types accommodations: Rustic, cozy cabins (no indoor running water), a big field for tent campers only, and a few spaces reserved for 4 wheel drive vans , and similar small vehicle camping, including rooftop tents and occasionally a small pop up trailer. If you prefer camping away from the tourist crowds, you will find our soft clover meadows, surrounded by green trees and well kept lawns, a deluxe and memorable experience. The beach is a short walk down the trail, where its peaceful and private, with no motorized vehicles or noisy crowds, only the sound of the seagulls, and the waves. Van campers have a few special areas to park their vehicles, most with a stunning view of the glaciers and mountains. There is limited parking and turnaround space, and we like our farm peaceful and not too crowded to provide a special rural experience to all who visit this magical farm. It helps to call or text before you arrive to make sure we are on site and can help you with parking and other details! There are three cabins sprinkled throughout the property. Two are off grid, close to the beach, private and magical, with wood stoves. All cabins are able to use the main farm lodge amenities, just a few minutes walk away and have their own outhouses..all with amazing views! You can walk on the beach from the main lodge parking area, there is a covered camping pavilion available to all guests, a communal campfire spot and bbq grill, lovely maintained walking trails and meadows, and even wifi! We allow most types of dogs, but do ask you to contact us before booking with us, so we can let you know our rules before you travel. All dogs must be well behaved, social, on leashes and at owner's side at all times to protect our trusting wildlife from accidental harm, like our baby pheasants, moose, bunnies, and songbird nests! TOURS OPTION As the eldest of the Kilcher clan (yes, the homestead family portrayed on the "Alaska The Last Frontier" tv series), and when time allows, I'm open to give a special tour of the unique and historic Kilcher Family Homestead and original sod roofed, log cabin museum. This is a 10-acre property along the edge of the north bank of the Klutina River--a major king salmon-fishing stream that flows into the famous Copper River just one half mile downriver. That part of the property used for camping along the river is 3 acres. This is a SEASONAL location: Memorial Weekend through Labor Day Weekend with NEW LOWER prices. At this time only the riverside sites (south side of the river dike that one drives across) are available for camping or RV parking. We have no power or other hook-ups on the riverside except that water is available on site through a series of new DEC-approved pipe and spigets, along with more fire pits and more picnic tables. Showers are extra @ $5.00 a person; Laundry tokens: $3.00 per washer load or 40 minute dryer load. Bar on site. Food service coming later THIS 2024 season. WIFI is only on the north side of the dike near any of the overnight rooms or the bar. We recommend no RVs to exceed 28 feet on the river side of the dike. Very private sites and spread out--far more so than other nearby locations. The public restroom is on the north side of the dike. AND we have several budget rooms available on the north side of the dike as well. In 2024, these go for about $100/night. These all have Dish Net, WIFI, and coffee in the rooms. This property is undergoing development. There is still a fire pit on the river side, as we have considerable brush to burn (not during the camping season, but brush is typically piled on the site about the time we open). Just to the east, across the Copper River, is the 12 million acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Our property is conveniently located in driving time almost exactly halfway between Anchorage and McCarthy-Kennecott. It is about 3 1/2 hours in either direction. At the Klutina you can charter a sight-seeing river boat or you can white-water raft from a point several miles up a historic trail that follows the river to its source--Klutina Lake and Klutina Glacier. You can obtain a visitors' license and fish here for salmon. You can also hike along the dike or numerous trails in the area.

I visit this campground at least once per year. The owners have made some thoughtful changes and upgrades since I last camped there. There were more visitors this time than I have seen in the past, but the sites are laid out in a way that allows for privacy and pretending that we have the astounding view all to ourselves. The view of Matanuska Glacier from the campsite is incredible. Hosts are responsive, easygoing and seem to have thought of everything. And as always, this campground has the best outhouses in Alaska.

Billy Mitchell, Alaska, and you'll see what your campsite view will be, as this location is literally at the base of this gorgeous mountain. 2 rivers, the Tsina and Tiekel, and Stewart Creek (All glacially fed...) converge in this valley. The Pad is situated on an alpine meadow with various spring wildflowers. (Please be kind to the wildflower meadows). Eveline State park is across the road and is a beautiful trail for hiking, skiing, and snow shoeing. Homer is 12 miles down the hill and has quaint shops and eateries in town and on the Homer Spit. There are boat taxis available in town for hiking across the bay. In addition, Homer is the "Halibut Capital of the World" and several different kinds of charters are available (Including spearfish diving).

Denali Rainbow Village RV Park, a Good Sam park, is the closest park to Denali National Park. It is located just 1 mile north of the park entrance. It is also within walking distance to all the shops, restaurants and tours in the Denali area. We have a very knowledgeable and helpful staff to assist you in ensuring your trip to Denali is truly magical. There are full and partial hook-up sites available. All sites have 20 and 30 amp hook-ups. There are a limited number of 50 amp sites in both, full and partial hook-ups. Full hook-up sites are either back in or Pull thru. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and access to free cable TV. The RV Park has a dump station, pay showers, laundry, clean restrooms, RV supplies & firewood. Pets are allowed in the RV park. All pets must be on a leash & guests must pick up after their pets immediately. Dog walking for a fee can be arraigned. Wi-Fi provided by Tengo Internet in the RV park. Private Dock Our private dock is for fishing and loading and unloading of boats only. Its not a play place for kids. Quiet Time Quiet time is from 10PM til 8 AM No Dogs barking, Kids running and playing loud Siting on fire having adult conversations not bothering neighbors is acceptable Guest If you have any guest, they need to leave the facility by 8 pm. Guests are not allowed to stay the night. Kids Kids and pets cannot be left unattended kids must be accompanying by an adult at all times.
