Description

Wawona Campground lies next to the Merced River, at an elevation of 4000 ft. Wouldn’t it be nice to camp right next to that babbling brook?

Well if river camping is your thing (how can it not be your thing?), then you will surely enjoy Wawona. There are 93 sites in total and the camps are large. They are relatively close to each other, but it's usually much more secluded than the campgrounds in Yosemite Valley.

Each site is outfitted with a fire ring, picnic table, food locker, and near bathrooms (with water). There are no showers, but for this lovely campground, it’s worth roughing it for a night!

The campground is pretty far from Yosemite Valley, about an hour drive. It is a pretty drive, but it is time wasted in a car that could be spent outside. Also, if you get stuck behind a slow car, the drive will take significantly longer.

I especially like this campground because there are campsites along the creek, and I love the sound of running water. It's also more spacious than campgrounds in the Valley and less crowded. That said, the downside is that it's an hour drive to get to the Valley, so plan hikes/activities ahead of time.

Take a long weekend! There's so much to do in Yosemite. Don't limit yourself to a single night.
