Carl & Vicki's land is a working cattle/bison ranch that sits on the Dakota-Nebraska Eroded Tableland. It is a diverse landscape of canyons, prairie, streams and ponds. Carl's grandmother filed a homestead claim on this ranch in 1914. We are close to the Niobrara Scenic River, Smith Falls, Fort Falls, and Fort Niobrara Wildlife Refuge. Birding, hiking, stargazing and canoeing are a few of the activities for the person who wants to experience the peace and quiet of this beautiful landscape. Educational bison/prairie tours are available. This campsite overlooks the Niobrara National Scenic River. Campers can explore the canyons and the prairie. Wildlife viewing may include deer, bison, eagles, hawks, songbirds, migrating birds, coyotes and porcupine. Mountain biking is allowed. This property abuts the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness area and campers must aquire permission from the Refuge to access this Federal land. There are numerous outfitters for kayaking and canoeing the Niobrara River. Campsite owners offer private bison tours. This is a premier area for star gazing.

Camped in a 22 ft toy hauler with pets, Sept 2026.

An incredible, peaceful spot! The camp was extremely remote yet conveniently close to town and nearby sites. It overlooked the scenic Niobrara Valley, offering beautiful views, amazing sunsets, spectacular night skies, and complete privacy. The ranch tour was an absolute highlight—getting up close and personal with the bison while learning about the ranch and local ecosystem was an unforgettable experience. The bison jerky was delightful, and we purchased several to enjoy at home along with other treats from the store. The hosts were incredibly accommodating and friendly. Highly recommend!

Carl and Vicki were wonderful hosts and the campsite was both secluded and beautiful. If you have the time, I would highly recommend doing their bison tour. You are able to get up close and personal with their herd of bison and absorb all of the knowledge they have to share. They are also wonderful stewards of their land and of grassland conservation in the US!

We can’t speak highly enough about our visit, hosts, and the deluxe bison tour. The Beaver Pond site was well maintained and absolutely lovely. Quiet area, wide open skies, and plenty of birds to watch around the water. Vicki and Carl gave us an unforgettable experience on the bison tour, complete with prairie history and biodiversity lessons, as well as the opportunity to feed/interact with bison safely from in a vehicle and on top of a flatbed trailer, which doubled as the perfect spot for a sunset-backdropped burger dinner. They were so kind, hospitable, and wonderful to spend time with. Their farm-stand and very nice shower facilities were the perfect morning stops before continuing our roadtrip, so we definitely recommend stopping by to stock up for all your bison meat needs. We left with memories we’re already so fond of and will absolutely be back for more. 1000% recommend the stay and the deluxe tour!
