Hale La’au - Treehouse Cabin
We had a fantastic time! Sanna showed us how everything worked and gave clear instructions. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils and the shower’s hot water warmed as fast as normal plumbing! We were able to get in and out of the property easily with the locked gate. Overall we had a great time and I would definitely book again.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in the cabin! We were smack in the middle commute wise for everything we wanted to see and do. While it still feeling we were the only was on ground in the area! Our hostess Sanna was amazing! She told us all about the area and how her husband made the cabin from the ground up with his own two hands. 100% enjoyed our stay!

Impressive off grid setup. Quiet (except for the coqui frogs). Very much off the beaten path. A unique experience. Maybe not for everyone; not quite camping, but not a hotel. Town is 15 to 20 minutes away, so bring your own food!

Sanna's place was amazing! Perfect place for Valcanoes National Park and seeing the Muana Loa eruption. A beautiful setting with plenty amenities. I definitely will be staying here again.

Low key glamping in the jungle
Hale La’au - Treehouse Cabin
Sanna has put a lot of work into carving a homeplace out of the jungle and it shows. We stayed in a unit next door to the one you see in the listing - brand new to guests. Many little sweet touches had been made for our comfort - new lounge chairs on the lanai, matching towel sets, etc., and as time goes by I'm sure even more will be added. Map the location well when you are considering staying here - you will see that you get all the peace and joy of the jungle environment, and none of the town life. It's fully 30 min to VNP, but also that much closer to Hilo and points downhill. Also be aware of the fact that while you are still "camping" - real camping with pit toilets or outhouses is a number of steps rougher than using this very tidy biolet. It only requires that you care at all about energy efficient waste disposal, and are willing to spend one extra minute in the bathroom per use. The shower is hot and glorious. We spent many peaceful hours just enjoying the wild nature around us. Highly recommend.

This was a wonderful experience and we’d recommend Sanna’s Lava Rock Treehouse to anyone! The treehouse was well equipped with everything we needed and the jungle property is beautiful. Sanna and her husband were helpful in every way, yet we completely had our privacy. Their dog, Rocko, was a delightful bonus as was the symphony of frogsongs at night and birdsongs in the morning. This is a fairly remote, off-grid house that's on a beautiful piece of land. The electricity is based on solar, water is collected from rain, and uses propane for the stove and hot water. There is a mini fridge, stovetop, silverware, pots, pans, cooking utensils, dishes, towels, cups, etc. for you to use. The hosts are very kind, greeted us when we got there, and waved us off when we left. We had a few rainy days and the solar couldn't keep up. That's OK because there was a battery pack for power and cooler for our fridge items. I recommend brining a flashlight and grabbing some ice when you are in town, just in case. Just remember, this is an off-grid house. There's no AC and power relies on solar!! We would definitely come back and absolutely loved the place!!

This hip camp was amazing! This place allowed us plenty of room to relax, cook, and play games. The property provided a great out door environment with the luxuries of a hot shower and fresh rainwater. 10/10 recommend!

We had a lovely stay at Lava Rock Camp. Sanna was the absolute best hostess and the place was stocked with everything you may need. Falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest and enjoying the tropical rain was just incredible! We enjoyed our cozy home away from home after our days of exploring Volcano National Park and Hilo. The sweet dog was the absolute hardest part to leave as he was such a love. Thank you for helping to make our vacation cozy and treasured!

Amazing property and very cool and cozy spot. Lots of sustainable elements and truly living simply and off grid here. Intenernet worked well, just have to be careful of your power consumption at night due to the solar system and battery capacity.

We stayed at the this lovely tree house for 2 nights, wished we had stayed longer. Sanna the host was really nice she showed us the place and how to use everything. The tree house has everything you need to make you feel comfortable. You are surrounded by trees and at night you hear the coqui frogs, it gives the place a unique atmosphere. I recommend this place to everyone, if you are looking for fun stay this is your place.

While off-grid, Sanna & Reese's treehouse had everything you could need: lights, full kitchen, hot shower, outdoor cold shower, comfortable beds, and of course the lovely backdrop of the rainforest and all its critters. When the bio toilet pump wasn't working well, Reese had it replaced the next morning! Warning: don't leave any food in the kitchen area, which I wish we were warned about. Our bread bag got chewed into on our first night, which was a bummer. They were also building a second cabin right next door during our stay so beware of noise. Mosquitoes were pretty active, but not surprising given you're in the trees and you're on the wetter side of the island. All in all, I absolutely loved staying here. Sanna and Reese are incredibly nice, and I'm jealous of their property!

Sanna and her husband were amazing hosts! She was able to accommodate us for an extra night with little notice, and we spent three nights in her wonderful tree house. The location is perfect for an off-the-grid experience, from showering outdoor to the easy-to-use bio toilet, but has plenty of comfort and style at the same time! The house is really really cool! Sanna was always available for all our needs, and the friendly dog Rocko kept us company in the garden :)The location is perfect for visiting The Vulcano National Park, and the East side of Big Island. Highly recommend!

This was by far the best place we stayed during our time on the big island WOW! Sana was the most communicative host and the place was beautiful - the treehouse AND the property. It was so luxurious to say the least. It had a massive gate which helped us feel safe during our stay. The bed was super comfortable and the hot shower was incredible. We had every amenity we could have asked for and some. The stairs had light up strips for us to see while we were walking, there was filtered drinking water, wifi... incredible! Would 100000% stay here again in a heartbeat.
