Bell tent camping in the South Downs National Park

This bijou bell tent camping site in the South Downs National Park is just the place for a quiet getaway close to the south coast. The Field at Findon is home to just four bell tents, which offer rustic off-grid glamping with a few home comforts thrown in. From this location on the edge of a West Sussex village, you can watch horses graze in neighbouring fields and see the stars come out at night. But it’s not so far off the beaten track that you can’t walk to the nearest pub. In fact, there are three – plus a very good butchers nearby.

Each of the bell tents is set up for up to a family of four, with a proper double bed and two comfortably-topped camp singles. Bedding, bunting and solar-powered fairy lights are all provided and there are camp chairs, a table, and a fire pit too. Make sure you order logs or charcoal on booking as there’s no shop on site. In fact, beyond the tents, there’s not much at all. And, in a way, that’s the beauty of the place. It’s proper camping – but it’s been made easy for you. Simple facilities (portable toilets, rustic showers, an open-air washing up sink) are tucked out of sight, between trees.

With this simple set up, if you want more than dinner cooked on the campfire, you’ll have to head out but that's not really a problem here. Did we mention there were three pubs nearby? You’re spoilt for choice – and that’s just in the local village. Further afield, there’s plenty more in seaside Worthing, whose seafront is six miles away. Then there’s Arundel, Littlehampton, Chichester and Brighton – each a few miles further, none more than half an hour in the car. The price you pay for being well connected is a little road noise on site from the nearby A24. But it’s also this that enables a quick route from the M25 – making short breaks in The Field at Findon a perfectly plausible getaway from London and beyond.

Fantastic experience
Loved camping here, it was so nice.Facilities was great and clean. Esta was super friendly and helped us to find the place when we got lost, and also checked in with us. It was very quite and serene, at times you could hear the busy road but it wasn't too bad. Only thing I would note to improve would be to note the stables sign on the directions as it can be tricky to find at night.

Fabulous bell tents and location
Our 2 families loved The Field! Great location for exploring the coast and South Downs. The bell tents were really comfy; beds, bedding, firepit, table and chairs all provided which was just the right level of 'comfort' for us adults whilst providing all the adventure of camping for the kids... Esta and Matt were super responsive to messages helping us select a local pub within walking distance to book for dinner one night, provided us lots of info before arriving and sorted the very minor issue of non-working fairy lights around one bell doorway straight away... Yes you can hear the A24 traffic noise but because its a busy road it was just a constant buzz in background which we honestly didn't notice after a bit... so much so, we will definitely be back again :-)

Bell Tent 4
Such a beautiful place. Tent is all you need, beds, cosy blankets and they even left logs and kindling. Beautiful views, horses - the weather was spot on for us but would definitely recommend even if cloudy.

Bell Tent 4
A really quiet lovely campsite. Great for the kids to run around and even in slightly wetter weather plenty of space in the bell tents and lots to do nearby. We would definitely come back here again.

Value for money and comfortable even with gale force winds this week. Spacious and clean. No stains on all the bed linen provided. Even had complimentary marshmallows which we had forgotten to pack 😊. kids first camping trip and found the blue flushing fluid cool… so we’re happy to go to toilet despite hating spiders 🕷️. Showers served purpose - and clean. Value for money - beautiful fields and secure/safe

Glamping with friends
It was an amazing stay and I have already recommend it to lots of people! Facilities were clean and really lovely, we also had a chance to speak to the land owners who were full of ideas on where to go and what do. The tent was very spacious for the four of us.

From the host
Set in a grass field with views of the stunning South Downs, surrounded by woodland and horse paddocks, the Field at Findon has just four bell tents. All of our bells are fully furnished for you to enjoy glamping on our beautifully rustic site! There is no huge plastic playground or gaudy reception building, just a car free field to connect with nature. Our space consists of just four of our beautiful five metre, creamy coloured bell tents set in the heart of the South Downs National Park, with stunning views of the South Downs and ample space for children to run free while adults blissfully relax. The Field is the ideal place to immerse yourself in the scenery and you have direct access onto the South Downs Way for either a breathtaking walk or bike ride.
Nearby attractions

The Monarch Way is one of a number of footpaths that pass right by the campsite and provides a great way to get out into the countryside of the South Downs National Park. About a mile north of site is The South Downs Way, National Trail, which is great for walking, horse riding or cycling (if you like ups and downs). The village sits just outside the seaside town of Worthing and the seafront with its pier and shingle beach is six miles away. If you’re camping with kids, Littlehampton beach, nine miles away, is a good option as the three mile beach is a mix of sand and shingle and Harbour Park has fun fair rides and amusements. Just inland (also nine miles from site), Arundel has a lido, a castle and a cathedral as well as plenty of independent shops and eateries in its historic centre. Chichester to the west and Brighton to the east are 30 minutes’ drive away.

Food and drink

The village of Findon is less than half a mile and is home to three good pubs serving food: The Black Horse, The Gun Inn and The Village House. There’s also a recommended fine-dining restaurant, The Sylvan Oak, and an Indian restaurant, Tajdar. The village has a community-owned shop for groceries and a good butchers too. A further 10-minute walk takes you to Findon Valley where there’s a bakers and a couple of small supermarkets. If you're spending the day by the seaside in Worthing, head for Perch on the Pier for breakfast, lunch or dinner with unbeatable sea views or try the fresh seafood from CrabShack on the seafront.
