The Maple Creek Ranch and Tree Farm has been family owned and operated since 1934. The patriarch of the family, whose family had moved here from Sweden, had a great love of the forest and trains. The property was one of the first certified tree farms in California with the goal of nurturing a healthy forest. In the 1960’s, a mile of railroad tracks was laid and the whistle of a small, steam engine train could be heard throughout the community. Local residents and kids were treated to free train rides and special events for many years. There is a natural spring with a small creek that supplies the ponds with fresh water year around. There is also a small canyon on the property with a larger stream called Mud Creek. The land is rich in Indian history and there a artifacts and other signs on the Indians presence. The Cohasset area is relatively unknown. 15 miles from our property is Deer Creek and the Lasson National Forest is about a 2 hour drive north.   While staying with us you can pitch your tent on our private 500 acres. We have 2  primitive camping spots on our property. Each spot has a picnic table and fire pit. There is a flush toilet shared for both camp sites. * During freezing weather the toilets may be closed so they don’t freeze! Please check before booking  *The spots are spread out to ensure privacy. Our property is surrounded by the forest and is loaded with deer, squirrels, turkeys and other forest animals. We have numerous walking trails, a fresh water pond for fishing and swimming. Please notify us if you have an RV.  Site 1 is best for RV's. Site 2 can accommodate smaller RV's. We look forward to meeting you!

Our 2nd visit & not our last.
Ron & Kristin are the best kind of hosts. Accessible, friendly, helpful & also left us to enjoy the place at our leisure. We brought friends who stayed in the Airbnb. We all plan to come back again. Summer was our favorite time to visit but the property is still very enjoyable in the winter. We walked a loop around the property, had a fire, played games, the kids took a canoe out on the pond explored.

Forested and Quiet yet not far away
As others have said, this is a fantastic camp experience. Ron is awesome and generous. You are a relatively short distance from the l their house(s) and the road beyond that but it feels like you are deep in the forest. I camp quite a bit and know a good thing when I see it. I hope everyone respects what a great place this is and goes there to disconnect and slow down.

We camped with our pop up trailer in spot #1 (furthest from the pond). Level with plenty of room for a bigger camper. Could back in or pull through in this spot. Grounds and roads were covered with wood chips which kept us and our equipment clean. Two picnic tables at this spot so plenty of room to spread out. Clean and nearby flush toilet. Ron was super cool, greeted us when we arrived, and brought us firewood. Very quiet and far enough away from the neighboring camp site to not see or hear them much at all. Feels very private. Unbelievable view of the stars because there is essentially zero light pollution. Truly an incredible place to stay. We would love to come back!

Best Hipcamp experience so far!!
Incredible experience. Ron was a phenomenal host, ensured the “forest elves” had a fire already burning for us upon arrival. We hiked around the gorgeous, private land for hours. Our dog loved roaming free. We will absolutely be back!!

We loved our time at Forest Camping! We were at Site 1 close to the pond, the outdoor kitchen and bathroom. It was wonderful to have a glamping experience with electricity and wifi, but still be surrounded by forests and nature. We enjoyed the turtles in the pond, and hiking on the beautiful property. We would definitely do this again. High recommend!!

Our new favorite place!
Just up the hill from our home but tucked far enough away in the mountains to feel away from it all. This place is a gem! We really enjoyed every bit of our stay. The hosts were incredible, the camp is nice and private, clean and quite. Great trails, beautiful little pond with a beach and picnic area and an impressive train track! Best of all, the hosts were easy to communicate with and they were extremely kind and personable. On our way out, our kids begged to come back next weekend so it’s safe to say, it’s kid approved!

The camp is so beautiful and well taken care of, everything from the hosts to the trails are nice. We got to take a train ride and kayak without having to leave the property. It’s such a welcoming and wonderful place to get away for a weekend and enjoy the only flushing toilet in the woods!

Camping in the rain
Ron and Krista have a beautiful property and would 100% recommend camping there for the space alone (esp with dogs!) On top of this, they were some of the nicest and most caring hosts I’ve ever had. When we arrived after seeing rain forecasted, they generously offered two separate areas for our use to dry off. We toughed it out in the rain and still had a great time (plenty of trees to set up a tarp where we stayed). The flushable toilet was also a nice plus (better than some restaurant bathrooms). Can’t wait to come back

Beautiful space and people!
This was an absolutely amazing vacation. I managed to book a campsite last minute and it was an incredible experience! We had a very large, very private campsite. They were thoughtful enough to bring us a map of the area and tell us all the fun things they had in-person! Next time I want to go camping, this is definitely a return-destination!

Weekend Getaway
We had a great weekend at Ron and Kristin’s property! Ron met us at the foot of the drive to guide us to our campsite, which was greatly appreciated as we arrived late and it was very dark. The site itself was well-maintained, and they provided us with a map of the property, bear spray, and 5 gallons of potable water, which was plenty for 2 people for a weekend. There was a fire ring, 2 picnic tables, and a charcoal grill on site, and an outhouse with a flush toilet directly across the main path (less than 1 minute walk) Due to the ongoing burn ban, we weren’t able to make use of the fire ring or grill, but we knew this ahead of time and brought a propane-fueled fire pit with us. Ron stopped by on our first morning there to check in on us and offered to pick up anything we may have forgotten, which was really kind. He also let us know that, although our check-out time was 12pm, we were free to stay as long as we liked on Sunday. We walked the trail that ran the perimeter of their property, which was nicely wooded and well-maintained. We also made use of their pond and the many kayaks and canoes they had available, as well as the lawn games available in the nearby shed. There’s also a heated, outdoor shower available just past the pond, which was great for rinsing off and for getting all the mud off our dog. We’d definitely camp here again, and would recommend it to friends without hesitation!

Perfect for young kids!
This campsite is amazing! So close to Chico and yet it feels so secluded. We had a newborn and multiple young kids. The cabin on the property was perfect for our newborn and the young kids had an amazing time walking the train tracks to their mini train on the property. We are looking forward to coming back!

Camping under the stars!
Ron and Kristin’s place was great! Really beautiful and peaceful (we saw shooting stars). Ron took great care of us, bringing some well water for us to cook with and a propane gas tank for a camp fire. We had a super relaxing weekend by our campsite and by the lake. Thanks!

We loved staying at Ron and Kristin's ranch, and we are definitely coming back! We stayed at site 2, which is great for car camping! We had 2 SUVs where we slept in, and set up a small tent for miscellaneous. There is a flushing toilet a few feet away, which we found super convenient! The site is surrounded by trees and far enough fron everything to have privacy, yet not too far where you don't feel safe. The last day my friend left and I stayed by myself. As a female solo camper, I didn't feel unsafe at all! Ron is very personable, and available when needed, and easy to communicate with. Overall, this was a very pleasant experience for my first Hipcamp; the bar has been set up pretty high now! 😊 Ron, thank you for everything, we will be back in October!

Site 1 - Forest Camping
I have so many positive things to share about this camping experience! We stayed at site 2, which was the bigger and further site from the community pond/kitchen area. Our site had plenty of shade and sun spots for our group of 5. This site could easily fit 8+ people if you wanted. Drinkable well water was provided and we requested the fire ring so we could enjoy it at night. There are pathways all around the campsite and because we were towards the end of the campsite, we barely saw anyone - it felt like we were the only people on the land. We were a 1 minute walk from the flushing toilet and another 5 minute walk from the outdoor common area with the pond, kitchen, picnic table, restroom, and shower. We loved the common space area so much, we cooked the majority of our meals there because, why not? The kitchen has a running sink and a grill for us to use. It also had electricity and wi-fi, if needed. Ron greeted us upon arrival and was a gracious and very accommodating host. He really wanted us to have the best experience - which we did! If you go in the summer, take advantage of their pond! It was refreshing and had plenty of paddles boats and canoes for everyone to enjoy! I highly recommend this place!

Delightfully secluded and Charming
Seriously one of the nicest, secluded and peaceful Hipcamp locales. Ron snd Kristen are super friendly, but never overly obtrusive. They have an amazing 500 acre property in a breathtaking location. The multi-generational love that has gone into their property is so charming. Our campsite was easy to back into and had two picnic tables, a propane fire pit complete with chairs and rustic tree stumps to sit around the fire. They provided a huge container of potable water which was great for face washing, brushing our teeth a washing a few food prep items. There was literally no one nearby. Ahhhhh….. But there was a flushing toilet just a 2 minute walk down a flat path! They also make available a common area with gas barbecue grill and a sink. There were other grilling spaces, but we didn’t use them. The common area has excellent WiFi and overlooks a beautifully landscaped pond. Several canoes, kayaks and a flat bottom boat is available for no extra charge. The additional toilet room near the common area has an assortment of life vests if you have kids who need them. I noticed a crochet set as well. My sister and I challenged ourselves to a game of corn hole. The results, We won’t explain but to say, we suck! Lol. Kristen and Ron have two lovely, friendly dogs named Maggie and Penny. Such sweethearts! I envisioned returning here someday with more family members for a longer stay!

Great Semi-Remote Camp Site
Ron greeted us as we drove in; he and his dog accompanied us to our site. There were two very large bins of fresh well water near our picnic table, as well as the propane fire pit (and a 12gal tank) that I pre-arranged for $15 extra. I was bummed to not have a wood fire (this is our 8th annual camp, and the first without a big wood fire to cook on). We didn't really miss it all that much, honestly. The propane pit worked great, and given the fire sensitivity in the area...this was a fantastic substitute (highly-recommended). On the grounds, there is a flush toilet (thank you), as well as a really well done entertainment zone right by the pond. The kids tooled around the pond in the boats and floats provided. We grilled there two of the three nights we stayed...ate our dinner at the tables...had a cornhole tournament or three, and played charades until it was too dark to do so. We spent Friday at the Bear Hole swimming hole (beautiful basalt riverbed - but be careful getting there - the road is not for your Miata). It was maybe a 40 minute drive in total - I'm sure it gets crowded on weekends, so if you can do it on a weekday... We rode our bikes down to the Cohasset Community Center for the 52nd Annual Bazaar (great music) on Saturday, and then just chilled in hammocks in until dinner. You feel like you're away from it all here...but if you need to get back to civilization, you can...a 20 minute drive down the hill, and you're in Chico.

Nice property with a variety of activities and communal areas to hang. Site 1 was a spacious site with some tree coverage (thankfully)! There was a clearing nearby which made it easy to watch the stars. The property had extra guests and full bookings but we didn’t notice at all as everything is spaced well and you don’t hear other visitors. Ron and Kristen were kind and helpful with check in and recommending a local swimming hole. Great to have some water provided to us. I would certainly recommend this place as a nice getaway!

Great place for family camping
We had a wonderful camping experience at this place. It is very well set up for a relaxing weekend without ever feeling you need to leave the property to have fun, even with kids. We. were 2 families (incl two 6-yr olds) with 2 cars and campsite #2 felt very spacious and comfortable. Lots of shade, Ron and Kristin provided water from their well, and the flush toilet was just a short distance away. Also the pond (with a bathroom, a hot outdoor shower, and wifi!) was just a 5 min walk away and very pleasant for swimming on a hot day. The kids loved the friendly turtles and fish. There are three short hikes on the property too. All in all a fantastic experience made even better by the friendly and helpful couple who own it.

Great campsite and friendly host
We booked both Site 1 and 2 with our friends and we had a wonderful time. We stayed mostly at Site 1. It was very spacious, plenty of shades, and felt very remote and in the woods. The kids loved the pond and was able to see the train. The host was super friendly. He greeted us when we arrived and showed us both campsites. He brought an extra table for us since we all stayed at one campsite instead. We had a great time!

Camping with a pond!!
This place might just be my new favorite place anywhere. The land was so perfectly peaceful and makes you feel like you have an entire forest to yourself. Our site was nice and spacious and had a cute little toilet house nearby. We went for the pond and it really caught our hearts. We loved how it had lots of turtles and fish! There is a gazebo thing with a sink and grill close to pond as well as bonfire pits and beach chairs which we used a lot. This place is packed with activities like trails, canoeing, frisbee, corn hole and swimming, YAY. The hosts Kristen and Ron are spectacular people and so genuine, we really liked that. You can’t find many pond areas to go to in California so when I found it we didn’t mind driving 10 hours for it :) Seriously Forest Camping was hands down one of our favorites. I’ve always said I’d never camp somewhere twice no matter how much I like it but I’ve definitely made an exception for here and plan on going back again… Enjoy the views!!

Hidden gem with valley view
What a great experience for our father/daughter RV trip! Ron and his dog Maggie showed us to our campsite. It was clean, spacious, with plenty of shade and situated so as not to be visible to the other site. If you’re tired of crowded campgrounds where people cut through your site, then this is what you're looking for! Even with another family at the other site, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Hiking to Mud Creek, disc golf, bocce ball, and paddle boarding with pond turtles were the highlights! Easy to follow directions and very responsive hosts. Highly recommend if you want to get away from “party campers.”
