Shepherd's Huts in Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB

·

The Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB offers exactly what it says on the tin: sweeping coastline and secluded heaths, just waiting to be explored. Nature trails and rural camps abound for ramblers and riders, while thrill seekers can get their kicks wild swimming in the region’s rivers or surfing on the North Sea. Winter visitors may prefer to get their coats, but can still enjoy strolls on now-deserted beaches, pub lunches next to roaring fires, and cosy stays in caravans or glamping pods.

Located on a rural farm near Aylsham in the heart of Norfolk, our handcrafted Shepherd's Hut sits on a secluded water-meadow overlooking a small stream. Available, between April and October, the meadow setting offers a genuine sense of seclusion, with fields, wildlife and open skies all around. Sleeping two, the hut has a traditional feel, made from wood, insulated with lambswool and mounted on cast-iron wheels from a local foundry. Inside, a comfortable double bed, a wood-burning stove and table and chairs create a wonderfully cosy retreat for two. The stove-top kettle means you can brew up without stepping outside, and a welcome box of tea, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper and cooking oil, plus your first basket of logs, ensures a warm and welcoming arrival. There is no mains electricity in the hut or on the meadow, making it a natural choice for those looking for a proper digital detox. Step outside to your own private fire-pit, which doubles as a barbecue with tools provided — ideal for alfresco meals and long, lazy evenings under the stars. With no streetlights anywhere on the farm, the night sky here is truly spectacular. A covered outdoor shelter nearby means you can sit out and enjoy the wildlife and countryside views whatever the weather. For cooking and washing up, guests have exclusive use of an indoor kitchen in a nearby converted outbuilding, complete with a fridge, microwave, single hob, electric kettle, and a set of crockery and cutlery provided free of charge. The private bathroom features a WC, sink and an excellent shower — just the thing after a long walk or a dip in the river. Devices can be charged in the kitchen. The hut sits in a secluded spot overlooking a stream — a tributary of the River Bure — where you can fish, paddle or simply sit and watch the wildlife go by. Pets are welcome and guests are encouraged to explore the wider farm, which is also home to resident artists including a stone-carver and potter. Pets are welcome and one or two tents can be pitched alongside the hut (at additional cost). North Farm is located in Burgh next Aylsham, with Norwich around 15 miles to the south, Blickling Estate just a short drive away, as the Norfolk Broads and coast. Please note we only accept children over 8 due to the log-stove and stream.

Suffolk Coast & Heaths AONB camping guide

Where to go

Woodbridge

As the gateway town between Ipswich and the Suffolk Coast, Woodbridge’s many campsites offer a convenient base for Suffolk exploration. Besides easy access to both the coast and city, visitors can also explore nature trails along the River Deben, the Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon burial site, and Rendlesham Forest, making this a top spot for families and independent Hipcampers.

Aldeburgh

Experience quintessential British camping at a holiday park right on the coast, with award-winning fish and chip shops and Blue Flag beaches nearby. The town roughly marks the middle of the Suffolk Coast Path, making it a great departure point for journeys north—toward RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve—or south, towards Orford Ness National Nature Reserve.

The Tendring Coast

Down at the tip of Essex’s Sunshine Coast, the Stour Estuary is a relatively recent addition to the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. Coastal campsites near Clacton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, and Harwich offer easy access to the AONB, plus other outdoor attractions, such as Hamford Water Reserve and Mersea Island.

Southwold

Another Hipcamper’s paradise, this charming coastal town is best-known for its secluded campsites, sandy beaches, and strong seaside heritage. Cradled by the River Blythe, North Sea, and Buss Marshes, hikers and bikers have plenty of different landscapes to explore.

Lowestoft

At the northern border of the AONB, camping near Lowestoft affords easy access to the coastal highlights of both Norfolk and Suffolk. Inland, you’ll find riverside campsites and the gateway to The Broads canal network, while caravan-friendly holiday parks dominate the rural coastline. Don’t miss the sunrise at England’s most easterly point, Lowestoft Ness.
