North End Farm is situated in the spectacular Dorset countryside, yet only a couple of miles from the Jurassic Coast, beaches, pubs, restaurants. Wonderful walks are available on and beyond the farm. The Pavilion is a great place to rest and strike out from. The beach is 1.5 miles away. It is on a network of footpaths in the middle of it's own organic farmland. Bridport and Lyme Regis offer plenty of art and culture and are reknown for food, River Cottage and the Jurassic Coast. There is nothing better than being warm and cosy around the wood burner looking out at the great views. Take off to Offa’s Dyke Retreat and such escapades are very easy indeed, as you’re almost on the border of England and Wales, with plenty of gorgeous scenery and outdoorsy antics on both sides of the divide. Site is set in 3 acres with new 2023 communal space, including games room sofa snug, dinning area, new wet rooms and kitchen to be complete December 2023. You can start gazing at that scenery without even leaving this friendly glamping site in the little village of Longtown, for the outlook here is one of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park. Ready for a closer look? Get those boots on and set off for a wander. The Offa’s Dyke path passes nearby on its way from Pandy to Hay-on-Wye, and there are lots of little local paths to explore too. A stroll of a much less strenuous variety (barely a 7 minute, in fact) takes you to the local pub for home-cooked meals, local ales. If you can manage a little further (a 6 minutes walk), you can get to a fab village shop stacked with fresh and frozen food, local tipples and homemade cakes. Stock up there and trot back to the site for a picnic or barbecue (firepit provided, with firewood available to buy on site), or use the well-equipped communal kitchen to prep your eats. 5 ensuite railway carriages with kitchenette, 2 pods and 3 further carriages use shared facilities on site include a toilet block with a couple of showers; no need to bring your own towels, as you’ll be provided with these when you get here, along with bedding for your cosy sleeping quarters.

3 nights at The Hobbit House and Secret Garden

Lost for words. The Hobbit House and accompanying grounds kept us warm, secluded and very happy for a three night stay. Although we would happily move in permanently. Worth a visit if you’re looking for somewhere secluded, off the beaten track and something back to basics. Kitchen area is beautifully simple in design and appreance. Toilet and separate shower block were clean and easy to use. The Hobbit House itself was snug, beautifully decorated and peaceful. Theo was an excellent host too. We will be back!

Where to go

Combe Martin Beach

Combe Martin Beach lets campers experience North Devon’s coastal allure first-hand. After settling into a seaside holiday park around Newberry Valley, with tent pitches and family-friendly caravan sites, relax on a leisurely beach stroll or try fishing for local bass, pollack, and flounder. Head to nearby Ilfracombe to charter a boat out to deeper waters to catch conger eel, tope, and ray. While there, explore Tunnels Beaches with tidal pools and sheltered swimming areas.

Exmoor National Park

Featuring expansive hilly moorland and steep wooded valleys, Exmoor National Park is home to spectacular vantage points over fast-flowing rivers and the Bristol Channel. Stay at rustic campsites for caravans and motorhomes in the middle of nature, or set up camp at more developed holiday parks near charming villages with fancier amenities. Then go out and explore the diverse landscape by hiking the South West Coast Path and Two Moors Way. Take the Dunkery Beacon Circular Walk to the summit for panoramic views across the park. On-site stables offer horseback riding for guided tours around Exmoor, too.

North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Back along the western coast, North Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is made up of dramatic coastline and hinterland. Campers will find cliffs near beautiful beaches, perfect for surfing, paddleboarding, and sea fishing. Areas around Croyde and Woolacombe offer great views of crashing sea waves for those staying at holiday parks with static caravan hires or lodges. Hartland Devon Heritage Coast also has some of the most dramatic coastline in the area, and offers secluded campsites and tent pitches for those seeking a quieter escape.

When to go

The temperate maritime climate of North Devon is relatively mild. Overnight lows approach freezing in winter with heavier rainfall from Atlantic storms. As a result, camping near Combe Martin is generally more comfortable from late spring to early autumn, when temperatures approach the low-20s during the day. While summer is sunniest, the coastal location means many days may be overcast, and campers should prepare for the possibility of rain year-round.
