Our beautiful handmade yurt is set amongst an ancient orchard on an idyllic smallholding, nestled between the Kent Downs AONB and Kent's spectacular coastline. The smallholding itself is a slice of rural Kent with free-range chickens just a stone’s throw away, you’ll soon be making some fairly unique friends. We have such a great location, Canterbury is just 10 minutes drive away and the trendy coastal town of Whitstable can be reached within 20 minutes. Berty the yurty is 5 metres in diameter and comfortably sleeps 2 adults and an infant. Inside Berty you'll find a super comfy double bed, tea and coffee making facilities, a cracking little wood burning stove, table and two chairs and a mini-fridge to keep those all important beverages ice cold. We'll make sure there are some essential local food items from the farm (bread, eggs, milk, butter) waiting for you when you arrive. Outside you an outdoor kitchen space to cook, outdoor patio eating area, camp fire, as well as a composting toilet, hot shower and washing up facilities adjacent to Berty, which are exclusively for your use. Berty is tucked away at the far end of the smallholding on the edge of a 20 acre accessible ancient woodland with bluebells flowering in the months of April & May. The small holding is home to free range chickens and other animals. Eggs are complimentary and we're more than happy to arrange for you to collect them yourself if you're in a 'hunter/gatherer' sort of mood as well as a loaf of bread, milk, butter and apple juice. Our rural location is truly fantastic! You'll instantly feel the stresses and strains of everyday life disappear as you soak up the delightful Kent countryside and adjacent ancient woodland. The picturesque Stour valley is just down the road, Canterbury and it's cathedral are only 10 mins away and Kent's extensive coastline can be reached in less than 20 mins. Close to May Tree Orchard, there are walks via Sissinghurst, Scotney and Bodiam Castle, and water activities on the River Rother and at Bewl Water. Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest is a ten-minute drive from the campsite and the coast around Hastings and Rye is just over 30 minutes. An amazing independent food business, Growing Communities, sells pears, apples and plums grown at the orchard in their box scheme serving North and South London, and you can also buy them from the Pear Necessities stall at Stoke Newington Farmers Market. Delicious apple juice and tasty chutney made from the organic apples grown in the orchard are available to purchase on site, as well as plum preserve and orchard plums.

We had two fields largely to ourselves - this is undulating farmer fields normally home to sheep so consider that. Very quiet. Little shade though we pitched up under some trees. Can park car next to tent and pitch wherever you want. Can see Rye bay in the distance. Facilities are very limited - one compostable toilet, one drinking water tap and no showers, electricity or WiFi! But there is a phone signal! Rather grumpy adjacent homeowner but don’t let that put you off as loads of space. Beach is a good 20 minute walk down a steep hill. Farm shop for a few basics. Otherwise, drive to nearby town for supplies or Winchelsea beach for local co-op. Pub 10 min walk. We found a working shower at St Leonard’s beach. Overall, we loved it and would highly recommend but not for everyone I suspect. Host and local farmer were helpful and very friendly.

The lodge was perfect for my partners birthday celebrations. We stayed a few nights and was so happy with everything. Annabel was very responsive and helpful and did everything she could to make sure we had a great time. The accomodation itself was beautiful and spacious and had everything we needed to unwind and unplug. Beds were comfy and shower was lovely, kitchen was well equipped and the welcome basket was a thoughtful touch. The outside spaces are wonderful for hosting and we ended up having the whole field to ourselves.

Where to go

North Sea Coast

Herne Bay and Whitstable are two of Kent’s most popular beach resorts, both less than a half-hour drive from Canterbury. Swim and sunbathe on the pretty pebble beaches, hire out a traditional painted beach hut, or tuck into Whitstable oysters at a seafront restaurant. To the west, the Isle of Sheppey is a favourite among campers, and its sandy beaches fill up with holidaymakers in the summer months.

South Coast

East of Canterbury, sea-cliff walks and windswept beaches tempt adventurers to the English Channel coast. Margate, Ramsgate, or Broadstairs beaches are surf hotspots, and further south, the White Cliffs of Dover are among the UK’s most iconic natural wonders. Laid-back Folkestone makes a picturesque choice for summer campers, with its long sandy beach, while bird-watchers flock to the nearby Romney Marshes.

Kent Downs

Just south of Canterbury, the rolling hills and farmlands of the Kent Downs AONB are responsible for Kent’s nickname: the Garden of England. Hike through ancient woodlands and wildflower meadows, take in the views from the Devil's Kneading Trough, or go cycling or horseback riding through Perry Wood. When to go

Canterbury fills up with day-trippers in July and August—plan an early start to beat the crowds at top attractions if visiting at this time. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing, with fewer crowds and mild weather. Springtime is particularly beautiful in Kent, when the bluebell woods and wildflower meadows are in full bloom. There are options for winter campers too, when Canterbury pulls out all the stops for the festive season.

Know before you go

Canterbury has several camping and outdoors stores where you can pick up everything you need for your camping trip.
Canterbury has public transport links to many of Kent’s towns and beaches, but it is handy to have your own transport, especially if staying at rural campsites.
Most campsites require advance booking, and many ask for full payment upfront. Check opening dates, as some campsites close in the winter months.
Wild camping is illegal throughout Kent.
