We live in a 18 acre woodland, in the heart of North East Wales, nestled under the hills of the Clwydian range. In 2018 we bought this woodland, bordered by an old disused railway and old sand quarry. Silent and forgotten, untamed and unloved, we saw a space of diverse trees, native woodland flowers and a flurry of woodland animals that could become something unique. We (Seb, Hannah and our 3 little adventurers) are passionate about people, the great outdoors and creating a sustainable future; living, exploring and having adventures along the way. We are on a journey, learning about nature, trying out new skills and discovering all the fun and activities the great outdoors has to offer. This place is special; a slice of British woodlands in all its glory. A place to be still, a place to run, and a place to create memories. There is too much here to keep to ourselves, too many first times to be had, too many campfire stories to tell; so we’ve opened our home for the world to share.

It’s all rather peaceful out in the South Yorkshire countryside, where Mooreacres resides. This dog-friendly site has a splendid rural setting in Hatfield Woodhouse, and activities around here are along the lines of gorgeous walks and birdwatching in nature reserves or kayaking, paddleboarding and open-water swimming at Hatfield Outdoor Activity Centre 35 minutes’ walk away. If that doesn’t sound just splendid already, the centre of the local village is only around half an hour’s walk away. That means that pubs and takeaways are never too far off. Of course, another, rather attractive option is to rustle together your own barbecue (which are handily permitted on site). There are shops in the village for sourcing cuts of meat, buns and other essential ingredients. For those of you who adore a day spent with your fishing rod and family or friends, the village also has several fishing lakes, all within walking distance of the site. The lakes at Hatfield Moors Nature Reserve are just a little further out (just five minutes’ drive, to be exact) and a scenic place for spying on birdlife, including nightjars. When you fancy a drink or a bite to eat and you want it quickly, the closest pub is just 15 minutes’ walk away (they run a carvery and stone-fired pizza for the foodies among you). Yorkshire Wildlife Park

Enjoy a safari experience without stepping foot outside of England at family-friendly Yorkshire Wildlife Park, only 15 minutes south of Doncaster. Book a behind-the-scenes tour or walk through the grounds at your own pace. Stay at a campsite near the entrance offering washrooms, shower facilities, fresh water taps, and pitches for tents and caravans. Peak District National Park

Situated 50 minutes west of Doncaster, Peak District National Park offers dozens of natural caves, making it a popular spot for potholing. Above ground, enjoy 56 kilometres of traffic-free trails for walking and horseback riding, paved roads for cycling, and areas for rock climbing. Although wild camping is not allowed on park-owned land, it is in privately-owned areas with permission. Designated campervan and tent pitches are available within the park in addition to pet-friendly wooden pods equipped with heat, electricity, and covered verandas.

Potteric Carr Nature Reserve

This grassy wetland oasis offers excellent wildlife viewing and nature walking trails. The area stretches over 580 acres and is a haven for migrating birds in spring and autumn. The meadow areas come to life in summer, as well, with insects and butterflies, while dynamic aerial displays from thousands of starlings are viewable in winter. While there are no campgrounds within the reserve, there are private fully-serviced holiday parks, roomy canvas yurts, and rustic tent pitches on wide-open fields available nearby.

When to go

June to late August promises the best weather in Doncaster for outdoor activities like rock climbing and cycling. Summer temperatures range from 20–22°C. Campers can expect cold, wet, and windy weather in winter from November until early March. Birdwatching is available year-round; however campers may want to bring waterproof jackets and warm clothing during the off-season. If horse racing is at the top of the list, plan to visit in September to watch the Doncaster Cup.
