2 nights at Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park

A lovely small campsite with plenty of space. Facilities were clean and not overcrowded washing up had hot water and there was a freezer for ice packs too. Showers were hot too and a good pressure. Signal was not as bad as we’d been led to believe 4G could be found in the camping field although not in the facility block. A really nice place to stay and well worth checking out Castle Howard itself while you’re there, fascinating place.

2 nights at Roseacre Retreat - Adult Only

We loved our stay at Roseacre retreat. The hosts were lovely and very helpful with information on how to get there, they offer support with anything you need. It was very clean and everything needed was provided. The views from the pod were beautiful I would definitely recommend and stay again in the future.

We had a brilliant few days camping at Ted’s farm. Ted was very welcoming, helpful and even let us feed the little lambs! The views of the hills from the campsite and stars at night were beautiful. It was a wonderfully peaceful and quiet place, but still close enough to neighbouring villages for food/drinks. Couldn’t recommend this spot more!

Ideal spot for a base for walks in the area. A working farm with ducks and sheep wondering around the camp field. The owner “Ted” is a lovely guy and can’t do enough, definitely stay again!

A Little Slice of Peace – Highly Recommend! Stayed here for just one night and it was exactly what I needed. The owner, Ted, was incredibly friendly and made me feel instantly welcome—like visiting an old friend. The landscape is absolutely beautiful, with animals roaming freely and adding to the peaceful, natural vibe. It’s the kind of place that slows you down in the best way. I only wish I’d stayed longer! Can’t wait to come back Ted!! Sarah x

1 night at Howdy Glamping

Close to the A66 & M6 by Penrith, so good place to be based for exploring the area. Site clean and tidy, super laid back, a bit rustic and quirky... in a nice way. Friendly people and dog! Free use of on site fridge/freezer and kettles, toilets and shower clean. Nice out door seating area/s with fire pits/bbq's. Glamping pods/tents and caravans looked interesting...! We stayed in my campervan..

The campsite is situated on a beautiful little piece of land off the side of Ted’s house. The campsite is enclosed by a stone brick wall and had access via a gate. There are geese, sheep, lambs, ducks and a turkey that roam around the site - all are very friendly and Ted very kindly let us bottle feed the lambs! There is a porter loo for campers to use, it was fully supplied with toilet roll, soap, running water and hand tissues. Ted has fresh hen and duck eggs for sale on the land. We brought a raised pit fire with us, but Ted also has them available to rent for your whole stay along with bags of firewood. Ted was very kind and made us feel very welcome. We’d definitely return! The only issue we ran into was a nearby camping group playing music throughout their stay and loudly into the night - we messaged Ted and he kindly popped out to ask them to turn it down.

Weekend Trip to Bickley Rigg Farm Glamping Wagons

We loved our night at Bickley Rigg wagons. We stayed in Oxo wagon, which has a beautiful bunk bed with cupboard bed beneath, and it’s full of vintage curios, china and oil lanterns. We enjoyed the views across the valley, a campfire, delicious local produce in our welcome pack (especially the bacon), learning how to use the storm lamps and watching rabbits on the hill from our beds in the morning. Feel refreshed and inspired. Be aware toilets and facilities are very much off grid composting ones. Bruce was welcoming and helpful despite his kids being ill- and hard to believe he’s built all the wagons himself- this is obviously a labour of love.

David kindly welcomed us at very short notice, very friendly and accommodating, brilliant with comms. Have your choice of parking over two large fields, you'll be parking on a hillside, with wide open views for miles, perfectly orientated to watch the sunset on horizon. Levelling ramps recommended in some spots. - Fresh-water taps on site, along with clean portaloo(s) - Firepits and wood available for hire

2 nights at The Old Chapel Campsite

We had an amazing time here. We stayed for two nights and had beautiful weather. There was just us and another couple with their dog. Ted was very accommodating and well informed about the area and gave us some ideas to fill our days. It was lovely watching his little ducks on the field and to hear the sheep in the morning too. It’s back to basics camping, no burger vans/shower blocks etc but it was absolutely perfect for what we wanted. ‘Proper camping’ Lovely quiet location, spotless portaloo and a friendly host.

The absolute best of everything, whether you are on grass or hardstanding, a beautiful site in the grounds of Castle Howard. Plenty of space too, although we were here on a Sunday, already booked to come back later this week. Value for money as it used to be twenty years ago before the sites became too commercial and expensive.

Lovely place, onsite shop is rather expensive and has limited hours. Only other pet peeve was the crows, were talking 20+ crows all cawing late at night and again from around 4am in the morning, had to sleep with ear plugs both nights and still got awoken by them.

A lovely little campsite. Just what we want in a campsite: quiet, dark, easy access to the hills, great host with a supply of fresh eggs. It’s in a great location within easy reach of High Cup Nick, Dufton and its beautiful glen etc. Ted is a great host who clearly enjoys having people passing through.

Mark and Angie have created such a lovely camp experience with there pods! We enjoyed every second of our stay. The pod is immaculate, and has all the things you need to enjoy a couple nights in nature. Thanks again for hosting us!

I stayed on the campsite. Gorgeous site with really good facilities. Close To Ullswater. Hosts were the best. I’ll definitely be back.

Great wee stay at Ted’s land. My daughter and I had a lovely time at the old chapel campsite. Peaceful and quiet, lovely views. A nearby hike up Murton pike is also recommended and in close proximity. A less traveled part of the lakes but with all the sights and sounds your looking for. We hired a firepit and got some wood from Ted and that kept us busy enjoying the night. We were also very lucky to have met/fed two of the lambs that were on the land. My daughter loved that. Highly recommended -
