We loved our stay here! Berny is an incredible host. Warm and welcoming and full of great information about the area. And her pot pies, smoked pulled pork, and cinnamon buns were amazing—all delivered hot right to our campsite! And the site was awesome: beautiful, with the best outhouse you’ll ever use. We loved the hike to the river overlook too. Go!

Weekend Trip to Glamping Yurt at Radius Retreat

We had a wonderful glamping experience at Radium Retreat! 🌲✨ The site was easy to locate and fully drivable, which made arrival stress-free. The place is very clean and well-kept — you can tell the owner puts a lot of care into it, and we particularly like the composting toilet. The indoor fireplace was a lovely touch and easy to set up, we had a good sleep during the stay. We also enjoyed the privacy — we didn’t see other groups during our stay, so it felt like we had the entire retreat to ourselves. For a natural site like this, it was a pleasant surprise to have bio-friendly shampoo and body wash provided when we arrived at the shower place. A few things to note: the The watering hole/shower room is about a 20-minute walk from the Warren, so be prepared. Reading the map and guidebook in advance is highly recommended, as there are some activities that the retreat site can offer. We could have got lost if we didn't read the instruction getting to the watering hole (There is one more junction that the map didn't show). More photos online would also help guests get a clearer idea of choosing yurt or getting around. Lastly, reserve extra time to explore the trails — I didn’t get the chance this time and wish I had! Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful and well-run glamping getaway.

Weekend Trip to Columbia wetlands Outpost

The campground was easy to find with lots of amenities and fun activities to keep busy with. We stayed at site #5 which was clean and private with lots of surrounding trees and a good size for my large SUV and a pickup truck with our kayaks. We chose to explore the wetlands on our own but I wish there was more information/signage readily available for where to park, doc, and kayak as we didn't get a chance to speak with anyone from the campground while we were there. Using the electronic maps provided on the website and messages with the hosts, we were eventually able to figure it all out and had a lovely kayaking journey. The worlds largest paddle was beautiful but again, not much signage and could easily be missed driving by which would be sad as it was a cool stop. Next time we stay here we will definitely check out the disc golf course, walking trails, and the slip and slide pond. All in all this would be a great place to stop whether you have kids or are adults looking for a fun weekend adventure.

Great, level parking site in driveway. Host had electric and water hookups conveniently close by. Ullu was at work when we arrived but came as soon as we called to have car moved that was parked in spot. Great location to visit Kootenay and Canal Flats.

Another season has wrapped up at Blacksmith Landing and I definitely left the camp very emotional! We absolutely love this place. The campground is immaculate, so well taken care of. Every activity you might want to do is close by, more beautiful lakes to choose from than you have time for! The owners are the most hospitable, lovely people (with the best stories!) and the FOOD. Worth the trip on it's own. Our entire family cherishes every weekend here and we can't wait until next season!!!!

She welcomed us with warmth, and true to her word, shared her renowned cinnamon buns—making us feel embraced by her hospitality (and that of her husband Stuart), and by the stillness of the surrounding land and Kootenay Mountain Range.

We had a lovely stay at HipCamp - a great way to break up our road trip. Brent and Stuart went above and beyond to welcome us and ensure we had everything we needed. You can see that they take great pride in their place and in hosting guests. For instance the outhouses were extremely clean and were decorated so that you did not feel like you were using an outhouse.

We absolutely loved our time at Bernie & Stuart's! They were incredibly warm and welcoming, and we're so grateful they opened up their stunning property to campers, like us. We purchased & were treated to a delicious meal and treats from Bernie. The hike on the property to the breathtaking Kootenay River view was a highlight, as was finding the charming tree book nook. For anyone boondocking, Bernie's "cutest little loo" is a huge plus! We highly recommend staying here!! You will love it!

The hosts were so lovely and welcoming! They were very helpful in getting us additional drinking water when needed, and were very accommodating helping us get a site that was right for my (special) dogs and myself with advance requests. I would definitely recommend. Only thing to note is that thew geographic region is inherently very dusty due to very small particle soil (mostly silt), so be prepared for many things to be very dusty when camping in the region regardless ;)

Bernie and Stuart are such wonderful people. You can really feel and are that they put their heart and soul in running the campground. They waited for us at the gate (as they do for every camper!!) and gave us a warm welcome. In the morning we ordered some home made cinnamon rolls and they were delicious. After that we took a walk towards the campground ridge (about 20mins) and enjoyed the breath taking views of the Kootenay river. We had a blast!

Fabulous semi-wilderness with king-fisher, geese, ducks and while I was there, leaping bright orange kokanee primed for spawning season. Duncan dam was releasing huge amounts of water to nearly bank full for the first day. Ducks floated by at 10kph and it almost seemed that they would fly back upstream for another ride. If you want an EMF holiday there was 1 wifi feed from the host and NOTHING else. No cell or other wifi. Also if you are there on a cloud free night there is the a nearly a complete milky-way. On the downside, mosquitos were in full force during the day but checked out at dusk. Overall a great wildlife experience in a rustic spot.

There was a dream......come visit to learn more!! Current update: The site is quiet and private and you likely won't see another human unless you go wandering. The hiking on our 7 acres is brilliant fun, with trails all over - riverside and beyond with excellent trails 5 minutes to 40 or more away -Wander all morning and shoot longbow all afternoon on the target range. A day well spent!! There are so many options for outdoor fun here. Canoeing, hiking, swimming, fishing, and archery totally do-able if these are up your alley. My chef skills are at the disposal of guests as usual, upon request. With 12 years of industry experience as a 'back house line cook and chef de partie' I can provide an exceptional meal anytime you need to refuel. It's peaceful and 'laid back' beyond measure here in Summer - and there's always a cool dip in the river if guests feel like cooling off. Grayson (your host) has traveled the world many times over, in many countries, and is also a 4rth generation local in the Kaslo/Kootenay area - an Aussie Canadian and something of a paradox!! So conversation is never boring around here - especially when the mead comes out (made in house and seasonally available). SKOL!!! It's a 'laid back farm' because despite working the land every day, we try not to push too hard and take it easy enough to enjoy the place. There's prime wildlife viewing by the river and in 'Deerhaven' the forested area down there. The focus is on nature here, so please no quads or dirtbikes ripping around - the "Duncan Lake highway" is just up the road for that sort of thing!! Mosquitoes can be bad at certain peak dates (which change yearly according to conditions) The 'farm' aspect and focus is all on gardens, orchards, and landscaping, no livestock/animals except Mr.Finnegan the Aussie red heeler^^ Things keep changing, and bees are a long-term goal once the orchard is more developed. There is wildcrafting available with a variety of native flora and a free tour to describe what's in season if you'd like to pick your own. The river level is controlled by the Duncan Dam, and at a high level, there's a private diving board and deck space riverside which is also an amazing place to tan, do yoga, or just relax. At low water the fishing is good and there are good size bull trout in there!! There are trails through forested areas on the property and a new outhouse between the mill shed and river. The riverside area is a wildlife corridor so be prepared to see deer, bears, eagles, osprey, wild turkeys, kingfishers, cedar waxwings, mountain bluebirds, the odd rare coyote/cougar, and possibly elk among others!! Generally, it's pretty quiet, but there are days...... If bears are a concern and you'd rather not have the possibility, camp closer to the mill shed, no worries. All the animals stick close to the river. There's never been any drama with the wildlife and we live in harmony here. The odd grizzly bear shows up, and we keep a close eye on them and take logical precautions. Please be bear aware..... August and September are high alert for grizzly bears as the Kokanee (inland salmon) spawn in the river right here!! So schools of redfish will be swimming around down there - they don't eat while spawning and they're protected, but it's quite a sight to see. The grizzlies tend to head straight to the spawning channel upriver to gorge and we rarely see any here, but it is wise to be aware of the possibility. The river is perfect for swimming and diving in high water, but very cold (glacial runoff) which is amazingly refreshing, but don't count on being in it for hours. There's a ladder for a convenient exit from the water and the diving board is perfect!! There's loads of space for tents down by the river, and a glorious 'sacred grove' full of elderberry trees that's quite a breathtaking tent site. The mill shed has standpipes with clean running water from the well, and it's about the cleanest, freshest water on Earth. Glorious. If you need electricity for charging devices it's available at the cabin, as well as wifi. No wifi by the river, sorry, totally off-grid down there and will remain so. There's also a '9 hole' archery course if this is of interest, max.50# draw and longbows only, please. You're welcome to use the targets free of charge if you're staying the night. As a semi-retired chef, writer, musician, farmer, English teacher, entrepreneur and revolutionary, your host can offer impressive gourmet meals to feed body and soul - made with local organic ingredients and great conscious awareness at an agreed-upon price according to your needs. The garden is full of organic veggies, and there may be fresh venison or wild turkey if you're here in the fall. Please no hunting and no guns if you are a guest. There are amazing day and multi-day hikes within minutes or hours drive, and as a local of many years, your host can provide excellent advice and directions. Learn more about this land: Our campsite is located along the beautiful Spillimacheen River, in Spillimacheen BC which is 20mins south of Golden BC and 30mins north of Radium Hot Springs BC. This property is very secluded and surrounded by crown land. It’s the perfect property to disconnect and reconnect, with limited cell service this allows you to turn off and just enjoy being outside in nature. Campers can choose where to park along a large cleared area. There are designated campfire locations and an outhouse. From the property, you can Kayak down the river, please Google and research before launching as there are a lot of writes ups and kayaking websites that feature the Spillimacheen River. Nature trails for hiking and walking right off the property. There is a well renowned natural rock wall for climbers 3km down the road, there are also a lot of websites that feature these rock walls. Within a half an hour drive you have two easy hikes in waterfalls (the Lower Bugaboo Falls and the Brisco Falls). Spillimacheen has a cafe and also a local market store that is full of delicious treats, beer and wine. The wetlands offer endless bird watching and beautiful mountain views. If you require firewood you must order ahead of your stay. On site purchases are not available. We deliver the bundles the day of your arrival.
