Dragonfly ridge rescue farm is the perfect getaway from the city and in nature! There is an animal committee to welcome you and Sharron makes sure you feel at ease. It was a wonderful stay to end my Canada trip.

Dale's yurt-style tent was an excellent spot for us to meet up and rest for one night before our canoe trip in the Kawartha Highlands. Dale was quick to respond to my questions and went out of his way to provide wine glasses. The electric fireplace was a welcome feature on a cool night. We made breakfast at the well-supplied outdoor kitchen. The light at the outhouse was a nice touch, though it could have used some cleaning. Thanks a bunch, Dale.

1 night at Foresthill Retreat
We had a wonderful time here. The place was private, beautiful, clean and cozy. Dale was an amazing host - super responsive, flexible and a pleasure to deal with. If the outdoor shower setup and the outhouse can be fixed up a bit that would make it even more comfortable, but overall it was a great value for the price and I would 100% recommend this.

We had again an amazing experience at Sharrons. This was our second time staying here and i believe now this is going be every year. My 5 yr old loved every single moment here especially the beautiful animals. She fed them, played with them and even held a bunny. It was a dream come true for her. She just didnot want to leave and even us !. Thank you Sharron for having us and letting us enjoy and be a part of your farm stay.

Natalie's bunkie is a truly magical place! The cabin itself is so cozy and thoughtfully provisioned with everything you could need all season round, from practical supplies like cutlery and cookware and a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on cool autumn nights to board games and paperback books and even a portable DVD player for makeshift movie screenings, if you can peel your eyes away from the view of the starry night sky.
The bunkie sits on a scenic body of water and a waterfall that make for great canoeing and swimming or admiring over morning coffee, and the rest of Natalie's property is bursting with whimsical art installments as well as gardens, fire pits, fairy lights, and fields of flowers.
My partner and I have visited twice - in the summer and the in the fall - and have found each season and each stay so uniquely gorgeous and relaxing. If you are looking for a place to retreat from the noise of the world, the bunkie is perfect. Natalie is so warm and welcoming and has put so much care and attention into providing people with a home away from home.

Weekend Trip to Foresthill Retreat
Dale's site is an ideal getaway for a couple who wants to go camping somewhere secluded but is no longer comfortable in a pop-up tent, on the floor with your own amenities.
Dale's site is basic, but in the best way. The tent, the amenities and especially the bed were quite spacious and comfortable. It has very thing you need ( but food. That's all you need to bring).
I highly recommend The site if you want to go Glamping on a budget and you're transitioning from regular camping to something more special and accommodating. Very well worth the price and will definitely book again..

We made a spontaneous plan for glamping at the Roost with hardly any preparation and were lucky to find a site. It was a really great experience. Our stay at the cabin was comfortable, though we didn’t have sleeping bags, our blankets were enough to keep us cozy. Sharon was very kind and gave us a wholesome tour of her farm. My kids loved feeding the animals, and bottle-feeding the baby goat was one of the highlights of the farm experience. My daughter especially enjoyed holding the goats and bunnies.
Sharon also helped us light the campfire in the evening. Overall, we loved how time seemed to slow down, giving us the chance to truly savor the rustic beauty of nature.

Weekend Trip to Foresthill Retreat
We had a great stay at Forest Hill Retreat! The tent was lovely, well-equipped, and kept us warm and dry all night, even through some rain. It had everything we needed, though we did wish there was a small kettle inside. Since it rained in the morning, we couldn’t make coffee, and the gazebo shelter didn’t have the proper cover, so it didn’t provide much rain protection.
The site itself is beautiful and surrounded by lots of trees, but you can still hear a fair bit of car noise from nearby roads. It didn’t ruin the experience, but it’s something to be aware of if you’re looking for total quiet.
One of our favorite parts of the stay was watching movies under the stars by the fire—it was such a cozy and unique experience that really made the trip special! Overall, Forest Hill Retreat is a beautiful and relaxing getaway, and with a few small improvements, it would be absolutely perfect.

We had a wonderful stay at the Blue Heron Bunkie. Super cute and cozy cabin; the host even put a little fire in the wood stove, so we’d have a warm first night. We scored with the view and I scored with a kindred spirit who owns this beautiful land. Did I mention the outdoor shower? Divine.

This was my first Hipcamp experience, and Natalie has set the bar extremely high. She is a fantastic host - wonderful to deal with and very responsive. The Heron Bunkie was immaculate, and had everything you could need including a great little fridge, lights, a small wood stove (and wood), comfy bed and little touches like coffee (plus a coffee maker with filters) and ice cubes ready to go. The setting was lovely, despite the drier than normal conditions - peaceful. Multiple blue heron sightings, too, and a mystery critter in the pond. (She supplies binoculars!) Having coffee sitting on the generous deck was a treat, as was dinners prepared on the bbq. Amazingly, there were very few mosquitoes, so sitting outside to read or have a beverage was truly enjoyable. Being away from any city, the stargazing was stellar, too. My pup was made to feel really welcome, and she started to look for Natalie daily. All in all, a lovely, relaxing experience. Thank you so much, Natalie. You're the best. Not a surprise that Ginny didn't want to get out of the car when we got home!

Dale was a great host! The property was well maintained, with conveniences on-site and gas stations, grocery/convenience stores and natural attractions just a short drive away. The lot size was large enough for multiple cars and tents and felt private.

Weekend Trip to Cabin in the Woods
My husband and I and our dog thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. The bunky was very cozy. The view was amazing.
And lounging by the falls was great. Natalie is a pleasure to talk to and I would definitely recommend and would definitely book again. I felt very comfortable the whole entire weekend, It felt like I was staying with family and friends. Thank you Natalie, it was a pleasure meeting you 😊

2 nights at The Rustic Shack in the Wood's
We loved staying at The Shack! Cathy's property is gorgeous and nestled away in a divine little spot. It's the perfect place to get away and escape somewhere quiet. We loved that we could rent the generator for an additional 20$, that made our stay much more comfier to be able to charge up our electronics or use the lights when needed. We also forgot our drinking water and Cathy had an ample amount provided for us. We look forward to returning.

The Rustic Shack had more than we expected: fresh water for drinking, washing, ice, fire wood, propane, butane, and much more! The third sleeping spot is a futon which was totally fine. Cathy is a wonderful host who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The surroundings are beautiful. If you want to relax, spend time together, play games, go for walks, and enjoy time in nature, this is your spot!

The best family-friendly glamping near Peterborough guide
Where to go
The second-largest provincial park in Ontario, Kawartha Highlands offers a wilderness experience, just an hour north of Peterborough. Backcountry campsites are available, accessed only by canoe. Hike through the Canadian shield or paddle along six recommended routes (maps are available in the park office), and spot osprey, great blue herons, and loons, whose distinctive and beautiful call will lull you to sleep at night.
Beavermead Park
A city park with 95 sites, Beavermead offers camping right in the heart of town. Head to the beach to swim, build sandcastles or play some beach volleyball, or grab a canoe or kayak and paddle under the Centennial Fountain in Little Lake, which shoots 75 metres into the air. And you can explore on two wheels, too, along the Rotary Greenway Trail, which runs right through the park, stretching seven kilometers past the beaches at Rogers Cove, all the way along the river to Trent University.
Less than 20 minutes northwest of Peterborough, the calm waters of the Pigeon River here are favourite for families. Swimming is shallow, and warm, and it’s a perfect place to learn canoeing—you can rent one at the park store. And fishing, too—the river is filled with walleye, bass, and big muskies.
This park really is quiet—the namesake lake doesn’t allow any boat with a motor. It’s all very peaceful and self-contained—the campgrounds connect to two sandy beaches, two mountain bike loops (one 11 kilometres in length, the other 17), plus a series of hiking trails, including one that circumnavigates the lake.
When to go
Summers in this corner of Southern Ontario are hot, well-suited to all sorts of aquatic adventures, and you’ll find the best swimming in these deep, cold lakes in July and August. In fall, the foliage changes to red, orange and gold, and if you’re okay with chilly nights, the camping can stretch through September and October, which are mostly mosquito-free. Winters are cold but rewarding for those who love skiing, snowshoeing, and ice-skating, perhaps on the frozen canal.
Know before you go
- With big-city Toronto just 90 minutes down the road, parks can get busy and campgrounds book up quickly in summer—the wise book well in advance.
- Pick up the region’s freshest produce at one of two farmer’s markets: one downtown that runs on Wednesdays, the other near the Memorial Centre arena on Saturdays.
- While there’s a comprehensive public transit system in the city, you’ll need a car to travel beyond city limits.
