Gittn' Pickled Appalachian Trail
in Gittn Pickled Appalachian Trail, VirginiaEnjoyable winter weekend
My 9 yr old son and I enjoyed a chilly winter weekend at Doug's cabin. Great location right near several awesome hikes, AT within a short walk of the cabin! My son loved the creek right out front. Great amenities as well, everything you need and more.
Camping at Galleywinter Farm
in Magic at Galleywinter, VirginiaShepherd's Tavern Farm
in Shepherd's Tavern Farm, VirginiaDave, was a very gracious and hospitable host. He met us when we arrived, reviewed a map of the property, and offered feedback on good camping spots. There are many trails traversing the farm that my son and I greatly enjoyed. The communal fire pit was stocked with wood and located in a spot that allowed for amazing star gazing. We also were able to observe Amish horse and buggies travelling along the road at night. A most enjoyable stay at Dave's property!
Pondside Bliss
in Outdoor Access Camping, VirginiaA mixed bag camping at this location. The pond and camp area below a grouping of old oak trees is beautiful. My young son and I really enjoyed kayaking the pond during the day. A nice rubber pad was also located in a flat spot for our tent. The fire pit had not been cleaned in weeks. It took me 30-45mins to dig out layers of old ashes and trash so we could use the fire pit near the pond. While the camp location is nice, there are issues to be aware of. There are neighbors near this farm. Once it became dark there was an incessant barking of dogs on the farm and neighboring houses. Someone next doors was driving a 4 wheeler or something loud late into the night. At approx. 10pm, either mischievous teenagers or a disgruntled neighbor began throwing large rocks every 5 mins or so into the pond in an attempt to startle us. They were hiding and I could not locate their hiding spot. As my young son became scared and not knowing what other heckling would commence during the night, I was forced to pack up and drive home late at night. We camp a lot and this is 1st time I have been force to leave a spot. If you are camping with friends and enjoying a few drinks by the fire late into the evening, this would be an ok spot. However, if your idea of camping is a little solitude and/or you have young kids who go to bed a little after dark I cannot recommend this location.
Free Verse Campground
in Free Verse Farm, VermontBeautiful and quiet setting overlooking Chelsea below. Host was accommodating and provided clear info about camping and associated amenities while on the farm. I would recommend 4WD for the road up, but this is mainly due to recent severe storms. Thanks for a great stay!
