Shark Creek Retreat is an ongoing conservation project, where I call myself the caretaker of these beautiful wetlands. I have dedicated 77 acres of it as a wildlife sanctuary, it is a member of the Wildlife Land Trust and has joined the Land for Wildlife environmental community. To date there is a property bird list worthy of a small National Park for all you keen birders out there. To date I have been busy regenerating previously cleared land from farming and the 2019 bush fire with native plants local to this area in the 100's. My aim is to surround most of the property in wildlife friendly fencing, regenerate the flora and create a fauna corridor as a wildlife safety zone from the wetlands to the road and to create a tranquil little space for nature appreciative people to stop and a take a rest. Shark Creek Retreat is a conservation area, no amenities, no bins etc. so you would need to be self sufficient and responsible for own waste. What you bring, you must take. So if camping out in a conservation area appeals to you then head out to Shark Creek Retreat, stay for a night or stay for a week 💚🌳Camp out on the edge of the wetlands at Shark Creek Retreat. This is a beautiful location set in a conservation environment where you can kick back, enjoy the vista, listen and see the many birds in Shark Creek very own National Ark and the best bit is that you will have the WHOLE place to yourselves.... YAY. A rustic minimalist camp spot with a creek nearby (just over the road behind the camp spot) if you fancy a paddle in or maybe a birdwatching stroll around the 1km track. A 134 bird identifications to date and the wetlands are home to a pair of breeding Brolgas which are an absolute delight to hear and see. Its a treat to see the endangered Coastal Emus wandering by and the Grey-crowned Babbler, Osprey, Red-backed Fairy-wrens and the Pacific Baza are a few more of my favs but there are many of others to see. All camping fees go towards planting trees and grasses to regenerate the land that was previously cleared for cattle and sugar cane. Lots of Forest Red Gums and Coastal Emu fodder as well as many other species that originally grew here. Campers will need to be self sufficient with their own toilet and water supplies and must take all waste and rubbish with them when they depart. Pets are also welcome but please ensure they don't disturb the beautiful wildlife. There's a secret deck but you've got to be adventurous to find it... a lovely little spot for bird watching, a picnic or a relaxing snooze in the sun. There are also several nesting boxes around, so look out for Sugar Gliders, Micro Bats and other residents if you fancy a bit of spot lighting in the evening. As you head Shark Creek you will turn off Big River Way onto Shark Creek Road and will notice a beautiful historic bridge. The Shark Creek Bridge was built in 1936, replacing a 1916 structure, it was also the first reinforced concrete bowstring arch bridge built in Australia... it is very cool so don't forget to stop and marvel at its beauty, fun to kayak under too...

This was such a nice spot to camp! Very private and well kept in such a nice place. Lola’s instructions were very helpful and made it easy to get to. Would definitely recommend!

Beautiful tranquil spot. Just what we were after. Falling asleep to the birds was just what our souls needed, warned by the fire pit with plenty of timber around. We would love to come back again and stay more than one night to have a paddle up shark creek. Being a wildlife carer it was nice to see all the wildlife boxes and native planting going on. Lola has put a lot of care into the land 🙏💚 Thankyou

Beautiful camping location, for those that are self sufficient, right on the nature reserve. There's ample space for the kids to run around and explore, and it's a great private 1 group camp site, so rare these days! Lola was a great host, we enjoyed every minute .

Such a beautiful, tranquil place to stay. A perfect, private place to base yourself to visit the many lovely local towns & attractions. So relaxing listening to the many beautiful bird songs & we even hit the jackpot getting to see an emu. The extra little touches in the "blue box' was a nice surprise. We absolutely loved our stay & would definitely stay at Shark Creek Retreat again.

We had an amazing stay, such a wonderful spot all to ourselves. Plenty of bird life and Lola was was very kind supplying two kayaks for my wife and I to adventure up Shark Creek at hight tide, truly blissful and a highlight to our stay. Lola is doing a great job to rehabilitate and protect her land. A safe haven for flora and fauna. Thankyou Lola for sharing your piece of serenity with us.

What a lovely place to stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this secluded Hipcamp. Having the place to ourselves was an added bonus. Close to McLean and a great place to stay while we explored the area. Will definitely be back.

This location is a gem. Quiet bush setting, lots of bird life to view or try and get a pic of. We saw an emu and chick, brolga, lots of finches, quails and ducks in Shark Creek across the road. Site has a table and chairs, hammock, bird list, canoe, 2 fire pits and tools. You need to be self contained. Great spot to spend a few days.

We had a relaxing time over Easter at Shark Creek Retreat. So quiet, escaped the crowds. We saw two Brolgas, they few over us daily and then on the last day landed, we didn't realise how big they are! Lots of Osprey and other birds. We arrived to a big firewood pile and enjoyed fires every night. Lola was very accomodating and helpful as a host. We would go back for sure.

My family of 3 stayed at Shark Creek Wetlands Retreat for 3 nights. Lola was excellent with communication prior to our arrival. We had the total area to ourselves which was very peaceful. There are several areas where you could choose to set up camp with an area for a campfire set up at each and a chair. The area is flat and you can choose shade or sun depending on what you need. There is diversity of birdlife on this property which we enjoyed. If you are interesting in paddling, Shark Creek is a short walk across the road from the campsites. We really enjoyed our paddle along the creek and saw many types of birds here also. I would recommend this campsite if you are after a quiet experience and you are totally self-contained.
