By camping here, you can expect a premium level of privacy separation between sites with your experience coming before profit maximising in our eyes. We have sites to fit all sizes with our largest and most separated being site 7. Overall we aim to offer the most authentic camping experience for all.
Firewood collection is prohibited. Land owner may do camp site inspection at anytime. Land owner has the rights to evict if you are not following our rules.
On requesting a site you will be asked to read the conditions and provide some details including vehicle registration and full names. This is seperate to Hipcamp and requested by the property owners on each booking.

We have two different locations available in Kangaroo Island with some options of sites in each.
FIRST LOCATION:
EMU BAY HIDEAWAY-30 hectares of peace, mainly vegetated with Kangaroo Island Narrow-leaved Mallee (Eucalyptus cneorifolia, a nationally-protected ecological community). Kangaroos and wallabies are in abundance. It has a wonderful feeling of remoteness and seclusion yet is so close to iconic Emu Bay.
Those with 4WD may choose sites overlooking Shoal Bay towards Kingscote.
Alternatively, you may set up camp anywhere on the property. There is even one under-cover position with a concrete floor for those concerned about the weather.
There are no amenities so guests need to be 100% self-sufficient (including BYO drinking water and toilet) and leave no trace. It is a wild block and only five minutes from the iconic Emu Bay, where the white sandy beach runs for 4kms, most of which is backed by 10 to 20-meter-high dunes. It is one of the best beaches on the island with crystal-clear water.
SECOND LOCATION:
Farm Stay about 15 km from Emu Bay and 20km from the main town of Kingscote. This is an operating small sheep farm of over 100ha. For security reasons the exact location is not advertised, but will be disclosed upon arrival on Kangaroo Island.
There are several beautiful sites. This location is fairly central to most KI visitor attractions. It is a secure place to set up camp and have peace of mind that your belongings will be safe while you are away from the site. The host takes care to situate sites to give campers the feeling of exclusiveness.
NOTES;
Check with me before lighting a campfire - this depends on the season and risk. Dogs are permitted if well controlled (register visiting dogs with local council).

A brief history of Ballara...Ballara is the 100-year-old family home built for William and Emilia (Millie) Baker & their five children. Built in 1910, it is understood Millie would not come to Warooka until the house was finished and furnished! Wise woman!William Baker came to Warooka as a young boy in 1884 with his mother, sister and 2 brothers, after the sudden death of his father.In the early 1900s, Will and his brother Alf became storekeepers, trading as Baker Bros. and running 2 stores in Warooka. Will, Alf and younger brother, Tom, also went on to become farmers.William met Millie when she came from Ballarat to visit her sister who lived at Warooka. Millie named her new home 'Ballara' in memory of her home town.A feature of the house is its ornate ceilings, and story has it that visitors came from afar especially to view them.William ran a wheat agency from an office on the front verandah and was also a contact for World War 1 recruitment.In 1927, William sadly died at only 50 years of age, leaving Millie on her own with their 5 children Doreen, Dulcie, William jr. (Bill), Ron, and Betsy.Millie died in 1965 and Ron continued living at Ballara until his death in 1988.Having never married and with no children of his own, Ron left the house and contents to his 10 nieces and nephews.After the family furniture was divided, Bill bought the house and placed it in the names of his three daughters.Carli and Penny were both able to enjoy some time living in the family home. A brief history of Ballara...Ballara is the 100-year-old family home built for William and Emilia (Millie) Baker & their five children. Built in 1910, it is understood Millie would not come to Warooka until the house was finished and furnished! Wise woman!William Baker came to Warooka as a young boy in 1884 with his mother, sister and 2 brothers, after the sudden death of his father.In the early 1900s, Will and his brother Alf became storekeepers, trading as Baker Bros. and running 2 stores in Warooka. Will, Alf and younger brother, Tom, also went on to become farmers.William met Millie when she came from Ballarat to visit her sister who lived at Warooka. Millie named her new home 'Ballara' in memory of her home town.A feature of the house is its ornate ceilings, and story has it that visitors came from afar especially to view them.William ran a wheat agency from an office on the front verandah and was also a contact for World War 1 recruitment.In 1927, William sadly died at only 50 years of age, leaving Millie on her own with their 5 children Doreen, Dulcie, William jr. (Bill), Ron, and Betsy.Millie died in 1965 and Ron continued living at Ballara until his death in 1988.Having never married and with no children of his own, Ron left the house and contents to his 10 nieces and nephews.After the family furniture was divided, Bill bought the house and placed it in the names of his three daughters.Carli and Penny were both able to enjoy some time living in the family home. Ballara still remains in the Baker family and is currently being cared for by Bill’s youngest daughter, Steph.

The site was lovely and spacious, nestled within a vineyard and olive trees. The owner welcomed us on arrival and gave a fantastic talk about growing grape vines and producing wine. We loved our stay at Koala Coast Retreat Farm! It was definitely our favourite on our SA road trip, not only because of the beautiful land it sat on but also the hospitality of Heath. We were welcomed and given a tour of the site and the facilities, which exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the walking routes, which were tough at points but provided great views and lots of kangaroo sitings. Sadly no koalas for us, but Heath showed us incredible photos of them up close that we had just missed. Definitely recommend booking, and thanks again Heath!

We had lovely time here! A great central spot if you're into just having a base to float back to, or very relaxing if you wish to stay out. Even though there are roads either side, if you face your camp towards the trees it will feel quite private and with beautiful views! Loved hearing all the birds calling out in the morning and evening 😊
The site itself was nice and flat, but glad my partner had a 4WD as the track was a little rough at the gate. Would totally recommend though!

This campsite is a hidden gem . Heath and Allan are exceptional hosts, a dynamic duo, friendly guys who go above and beyond to ensure your stay is comfortable. The views across to the ocean are spectacular, and the sites are large and flat. Was lucky enough to see a koala and feed the donkeys too. Also available are freshly laid eggs from the on-site chooks. You are “at one with nature” in this natural environment, a ‘no frills’ campsite that has a unique charm about it. And although it has only been open a short time you can see from the plans it will be even more beautiful when finished. I extended my stay as I was so impressed, and would definitely return in the future.

We really enjoyed our 4 night stay at Koala Retreat. The camp is elevated, with views of the hills, ocean and gum trees which were sensational. There are several walks you can venture on at the camp, where lots of wildlife can be seen. While Allan's camp is still in its infancy, alot of work is being completed which will make it even better in the future. Allan's son Heath was the most amazing host, going above and beyond to personally introduce himself and make everyone feel welcome.

We stayed here on our way to Cape Jervis to catch the kangaroo island ferry the next morning and it was a great spot for that! Lovely and scenic, would recommend fly nets if you’re staying during the daytime but they seemed to only turn up while the sun was out so didn’t bother us too much for our overnight stay.

Very private and clean campsite. I stayed at site 3 which was a drive thru site. I travelled on my own, but there is heaps of room for at least to set ups if needed. Very peaceful place to stay.

Awesome camp in a paddock at Six Strings winery. Did the best tasting we've ever done with Michael, he took us through the whole process of growing through to bottling of his wines. Great base to explore McLaren Vale and surrounds from, and great alternative to a caravan park. Kim gave us some excellent cherries too! Would definitely recommend.
