Beautiful setting. Watch the sunset over the water. Only 4 spots and we were the only campers. Plenty of grass for kids to play. Fires permitted. Only downside is the old highway behind. Just take ear plugs

Weekend Trip to Bark Hut Mill

We had an incredible long weekend at Bark Hut Mill. Got super lucky with beautiful sunny days and clear and crisp wintry nights and mornings. Kev was super lovely and dropped in to welcome us and have a yarn. Our group and two dogs had the best time, and we collectively decided we will have to be back for another visit this winter. Groundswell was amazing, we had one of the best camping experiences here. The campsite is spacious, quiet and has everything you could need. The space was clean and clear from litter. We will definitely be back again in the near future, thank you for everything!

This is the absolute best Hipcamp I have stayed at. Glen and Zoe are amazing, welcoming hosts who couldn’t be more helpful and friendly. River frontage, beautiful grassy sites, pet friendly and fires allowed! There is also a jetty and boat ramp, this place really ticks all the boxes! Great fishing and sites spaced for privacy, big bags of firewood and ice for sale as well. Love it here, didn’t want to leave and will definitely be back as soon as we can.

Sharon the host was warm and welcoming. Many fire pits to choose form and A LOT of land to explore. Hand fed the poultry with feed you can purchase from reception for $2 a bag. Really enjoyed the all animals on the farm. Would definitely come again in the warmer season!

The weather had been wet so site 3 was not available. Luckily site 2 was vacant and we had 4 relaxing nights enjoying the pelicans, kangaroos and dolphins. The view, the peacefulness, the beauty, the wildlife and the fact there are only 4 other sites - no crowding. Close to towns but far enough away that there is t any noise/traffic. Glenn and Zoe were very friendly and helpful. This campsite certainly lives up to its name.

This is our 4th visit to this campsite. Zoe and Glenn do an amazing job keeping the sites in pristine condition. This time we had freinds join us on on of the sites and they have come away ith the same feelings as us. Unfortunately this time the fishing was not that great because of all the rain. I/we highly recommend this campground. We certainly will be back.

Wedgetail Eagles hunt overhead. Pretty faced wallabies are endemic and Koalas may sometimes be seen. Our property backs on to the Hogarth Range, where there are numerous orchards. We hope to convert the old dairy bails to a camp kitchen soon, but currently it can be used as shelter if required. Visitors need to be self contained at this stage. Pets are welcome if kept under control.

Bungawalbin Wildlife Reserve

In 1987 I moved from Sydney to The Bungawalbin. It was nothing but bush back then but that was the attraction for me. I had been a clerk in the Dept Social Security in Sydney but my dream was to build a homestead and run some cattle. I had no idea what I was in for. I had no building skills and was in no way a handyman. There was no power, except for a couple of car batteries and 3 x 42 watt solar panels. I bought a chainsaw, a generator and a camp oven and 35 years later I am still here. I have come to love the Bungawalbin and have formed a very real bond with the whole area and have learnt so much in the journey. Like most parts of the East Coast the land has been badly managed since European invasion in the way of logging, grazing, farming and burning practices that have degraded the diversity of what was once possibly the most diverse part of Australia. The bush is resilient but there is a limit to what it can withstand and I fear this precious wetlands is disappearing fast. 2 years ago the bushfires devastated the whole forest leaving very little undamaged and it is still struggling to recover.

Dungarubba Fields

We offer you a well located and secure camp-site to explore the North Coast or for that overnight stay while you are travelling to your destination and need a safe place to camp. Our four campsites are spacious and are freshly mown flat grassed sites. Each campsite has 1 or 2 stone circles for campfires, with free kindling and free firewood supplied to all campsites. Whether you are a single traveller, a couple, family or group booking we have the campsite for you. We are family friendly and dog friendly. Dungarubba Fields is a private, rural setting on six acres on Bundjalung country. Four of our camp sites are situated across a small bridge in the back paddock, and one camp site is situated just before the bridge for those self driving campervans with a wider wheel-base. The paddock was once cleared and in recent years we have planted and cared for over 100 new Koala and rainforest trees. After the Northern Rivers floods of 2022 we are now continuing the bush regeneration beside the Dungarubba wetland which borders our property. Our camp-sites offer shade, space, wildlife and birdlife. Campfires are allowed 12 months a year depending on fire ratings and local conditions except on days of Total Fire Ban and the preceding evening going into a Total Fire Ban. We supply the free firewood to each campsite as we understand how important the campfire is to the camping experience. Outside the fire season we can supply a readymade Bonfire at an additional cost to your booking. Hipcampers can access fresh drinking water (rainwater) from our rainwater tanks, with an accessible tap near our home. Hipcampers have access to a downstairs flushing toilet at the house. We offer a Portaloo for larger group bookings situated beside your camp site as an optional extra for an additional cost. The Portaloo needs to be booked when you make your booking. The house on the property was originally built in 1903 as the Catholic Church of the nearby locality Riley's Hill. In the 1940’s it was moved to the current site after low attendance by parishioners who didn’t want to have to row across the Richmond River and get their feet wet to attend Mass. The church sold the building in the 1980’s and it was raised off the ground with two new wings attached on either side to become a private residence. The sugar cane and soybeans, however more surrounding land is being planted to Macadamia nuts which will change the look of the landscape in future. During May to November of an evening, you can look out for the occasional cane fire which is a historic part of the harvesting of sugar. The Richmond River and boat ramp is a short 2 minutes drive for both fishing and water skiing. The Broadwater National Park with sand-dunes and a fishing beach is only a 10 minute drive away. The Pacific Highway is 7 minutes drive away. The beautiful coastal village of Evans Head with shops, a medical clinic and a patrolled beach is just a 15 minutes drive. The nearest townships are Broadwater (2 fuel stations and a pub under new management), Coraki (junction of 2 rivers), Woodburn (pub with a bistro and a laundrette) and Evans Head (a township with most services). We are a 45 minutes drive to Byron Bay and 25 minutes to the coastal city of Ballina up the Pacific Highway or 25 minutes drive inland to the city of Lismore. We welcome friendly dogs and there is plenty of space for them to run around and chase balls or other dogs. Our dog Stella is a 4 year old Blue Heeler, who greets people from the balcony barking as you drive in. Don’t let the barking fool you as she loves visitors and their dogs. We expect owners to be responsible for their dogs and in particularly when there are Koalas close by. We ask dogs not to roam at night as Koalas are nocturnal (and so are other critters) and night-time is when they choose their food tree for the next day and roam around. An approx. 8min journey each way and costs $7.00 each way, payable by credit card only. So you can easily go into Ballina town for all shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. If the ferry isn't for you, you can drive to Ballina via Wardell on River Drive. The bungalow is located approx. 25m from the main residence, and the campsite is located approx. 300m from the main residence tucked away in the paddocks and forest. We are onsite and available if needed. Sugar Beach Ranch is an operating farm with staff onsite caring for animals and maintaining the grounds. Wildlife includes abundant birdlife , Swamp Wallaby, Koala, Echidna, Bandicoot, Possums, goannas, carpet snakes and green and brown tree snakes. A good location to explore the Tuckean Swamp, the property takes in 20 ha of Lowland Subtropical Rainforest on floodplain and Melaleuca Swamp. Heading 4.5 km south along the road is the Bagotville Barrage from which you can explore the Tuckean Swamp by canoe for kilometres and observe the birdlife including ducks, comb-crested jacana and black swan.
