Nestled right up against the escarpment at an elevation of 450m, this high-end, off-grid 40 acre property effectively offers your own private slice of Macquarie Pass National Park - amazing views, giant cedar trees, fern forests, cascading waterfalls and palms surround. It feels remote but it's only 90 min from Sydney, 30 min to Kiama and just 15 min to the shops. The property also offers the only hiking path up to the top of the escarpment for some truly amazing views. As of September 2025, many of the trails on the property have been degraded by the rains and are now challenging for 2WD cars. If you're towing or it's wet we recommend AWD or 4WD vehicles. Since this is coastal rainforest and it has been very wet, expect leeches anywhere it is damp. These are easily kept at bay with deet and or trousers tucked into socks. We're not particularly price sensitive - until all those rate rises - but we are extremely value sensitive so we set out to make your stay extremely good value for your hard earned money. The land itself does most of the heavy lifting but also personal service and of course there's Lana to fall in love with. Note, Mellows Rd is 2.6km long and rises 400m - in parts the road is a 15 degree grade. It's all paved but narrow so if you are towing a large heavy load, it's going to strain your car.

We are 1.5 hrs from Sydney. On arrival you will feel the atmosphere of this wilderness area. Colo River Hut is located adjacent to the Colo River. A beautiful, unspoiled location on a pristine river. With it's own private beach and over 400 metres of riverfront. We are on the opposite side of river from the the Wollemi National Park. The hut sits (alone) within the eastern (10 acre paddock) of our property. There are no walls and so you have permanent views across the paddock to large sandstone cliffs and we are less than 30 metres from the riverbank. The Hut has a rustic tin roof, a large bench area with power points and task lighting. Tents or swags can be set up within the Colo River Hut. Or, if you wish, you can set up your tent or camper or small caravan adjacent to the Hut. There is plenty of room as there is a firm maximum of 8 guests (and 3 vehicles) with each booking. The Hut has a raised hardwood timber floor and enclosed composting toilet and hot/cold shower facilities. It also has ceiling fans for airflow and insect control. We provide a gorgeous shaded area under a large tree with valley views, with a large bbq table and chairs and fire pit (with grill) for your enjoyment. Firewood is also provided. Suitable for swimming, canoes, bikes, Bass fishing, and hiking, the Colo River Hut can be as active or relaxing as you wish. The Colo River Valley remains largely undiscovered, and is on the edge of the Wollemi wilderness. The Colo is fed by the Wolgan and Capertee Rivers. It has a long history and retains much of its' early unspoiled charm.

Weekend Trip to Colo River Hut

Our group loved Colo River Hut! We camped with 5 adults and 4 dogs in 3 campervans. What a fantastic camping experience! The scenic drive in, swimming and fishing in the river with your own access, fires under starry night sky's and misty valley mornings. The Hut was well utilised and was a fantastic facility for our party of campers. Richard was so helpful and we will all be coming back again to stay. We highly recommend this Hipcamp. 10 out of 10.

Weekend Trip to Seclusion at Nangala

We had a fantastic stay at Nangala. Such a wonderful experience to have the place to ourselves. Amazing bird life and sounds. And such a luxury to have the 'shed', which was better fitted out than some AirBnBs we've stayed in! The drive down to the Megalong Valley is stunning and great to be able to walk some of the Six Foot Track as well, which is within easy driving distance. Would highly recommend this camping (glamping!) spot!

This is our largest site - it can easily accommodate double the cars and tents pictured. We're not precious about the ferns - they grow back very quickly. You get at least 400 sqm completely to yourself - no sharing with others.

Amazing views from the secluded camping spots in the hills. The first couple of spots accessible by my little 2WD city car, but would need a 4WD or be willing to walk for others. Ian was very helpful and his dog Lana is very friendly. Fire pit and chemical toilet at each spot. Optional extras such as a beautiful open shower (or hot spa) with a view or a coffee or gourmet chicken sandwich brought to you in the morning. Quite pricey but very special - I’d stay again!

Weekend Trip to Colo River Hut

Great spot away from everything. Hut was great for some shelter with fans as it was 39deg during our stay. Unfortunately the river was a bit dirty to swim too long during our stay but would be awesome when the water is cleaner. Only issue we had, on about 5 occasions over the weekend we had cars stopping on the road next to the property and turn all their lights and off for a few minutes at a time, was a little creepy as there is no reason to be stopping. Overall had a fun time though

Camping, but with lovely comforts! Love the bathtub, the outdoor shower, the birds and the slight view of the escarpment especially during sunset. Didn’t end up going down to the swimming hole as I don’t like leeches (my partner got one), but the sound of the running creek was nice. Chad gave some good tips for other sights as well. Will definitely stay again. Thanks so much Chad.

Ian, the host was incredibly helpful, and his dog Lana was adorable, she slept outside our tent the whole night and didn’t bother us while we slept, the view was incredible with much lush greenery, it was super clean and we encountered no leeches, only a few little jumping spiders! The driveway was difficult, but other sites are more accessible, however our tiny car was able to make it despite the rough terrain. Definitely recommend taking a look if you like waking up to stunning views and a remote, private location.
