We are 1.5 hrs from Sydney. On arrival you will feel the atmosphere of this wilderness area.
Colo River Hut is located adjacent to the Colo River. A beautiful, unspoiled location on a pristine river. With it's own private beach and over 400 metres of riverfront.
We are on the opposite side of river from the the Wollemi National Park. The hut sits (alone) within the eastern (10 acre paddock) of our property. There are no walls and so you have permanent views across the paddock to large sandstone cliffs and we are less than 30 metres from the riverbank.
The Hut has a rustic tin roof, a large bench area with power points and task lighting. Tents or swags can be set up within the Colo River Hut. Or, if you wish, you can set up your tent or camper or small caravan adjacent to the Hut. There is plenty of room as there is a maximum of 8 guests (and 3 vehicles) with each booking.
The Hut has a raised hardwood timber floor and enclosed composting toilet and hot/cold shower facilities. It also has ceiling fans for airflow and insect control.
We provide a gorgeous shaded area under a large tree with valley views, with a large bbq table and chairs and fire pit (with grill) for your enjoyment. Firewood is also provided.
Suitable for swimming, canoes, bikes, Bass fishing, and hiking, the Colo River Hut can be as active or relaxing as you wish.
The Colo River Valley remains largely undiscovered, and is on the edge of the Wollemi wilderness. The Colo is fed by the Wolgan and Capertee Rivers. It has a long history and retains much of its' early unspoiled charm.

In summer you may see mumma swan and her baby cygnets, as well as lots of ducklings. Drop in your paddle board or kayak for a leisurely paddle.
Take a relaxed stroll around the property and depending on the season you might spy a wylie fox or a turtle laying eggs. Deer occasionally visit and echidnas and wombats, although nocturnal animals sometimes are a precious sight. There are platypus in the creek and fish in the lake.k
Pre-booked riding lessons available. We have a state forest over the road suited to bush walking or mountain bikes. Ammo the horse who galloped out in the Sydney 2000 Olympics opening ceremony is buried here at Lakestead Farm. We love to speak about our Olympic experience.

We are located minutes from the M1, easy to break your journey,
40 minutes from Wahroonga and Newcastle exit. Just 5 minutes drive to Wyong Centre with shopping centre and good restaurants, and 20 minutes drive to beaches. Off the ground fires are allowed outside bushfire season. Wood to be supplied by campers. Our property is designed to welcome small groups of people who want a quiet getaway. Because we like to keep it more intimate, The property is not designed for large groups of 10 or more wanting a social gathering or party.
We are an easy 40 minute drive to the Hunter Valley wineries and concerts in the vines
The Lake can be fun to swim or paddle around but all visitors must wear life vests whilst in the water.
Locally we have some great festivals to visit the Glenworth Food and Wine festival, Yarramalong valley Spring fair with Scarecrow comp, Wyong Love Lanes festival, Harvest festival, Ratmines Catalina Festival, Brisbane water Oyster Festival to name a few.

Camping toilet
At Lakestead Farm we pride ourselves on our beautiful environment. We have lots of wildlife around. We are very upset when visitors to the Farm dig holes and poo in them. Leaving toilet paper on top. This is so unfair to us and future campers on our sites.
Because this has occurred we will only allow campers with camping toilets.
In order for us to accept your request you need to confirm you have a toilet.
Don’t say yes if you don’t have one, Checks will be done, if you don’t have a portable toilet you will be asked to leave and your fees won’t be refunded.

Amazing location and facilities. Yara made us feel right at home. We loved camping so close to the river and as it was a bit cooler, made full use of the fire pit and firewood. The bathroom facilities were fantastic and although we visited on a quiet weekend, we got the impression that even when booked out, you’d never feel crowded or cramped.
Will definitely visit again!

This was a wonderful stay, location was beautiful and relaxing, very peaceful and quiet - perfect for a weekend get away!
Plenty of space for my pup to explore and use up all his energy. The amenities were great including the spacious bench in the camp kitchen! Would definitely recommend and/or come back

Whispering Gums has so far been the best Hipcamp site I've stayed at - it will be hard to beat. Yara is a top host, the campsites are nicely spread out on flat ground with trees, shade and short grass. The river is outstanding. firewood available on site. Will definitely be back!

Great spot away from everything. Hut was great for some shelter with fans as it was 39deg during our stay. Unfortunately the river was a bit dirty to swim too long during our stay but would be awesome when the water is cleaner. Only issue we had, on about 5 occasions over the weekend we had cars stopping on the road next to the property and turn all their lights and off for a few minutes at a time, was a little creepy as there is no reason to be stopping. Overall had a fun time though

We loved our stay overlooking the stunning lake, green hills and grazing horses! We loved that Sandy was so welcoming but also loved that we had so much space and peace to ourselves.
We sadly didn’t catch any bass this time but we will definitely be back to try our luck again soon!

The most beautifully manicured flat expansive grass we have ever stayed. Almost no flies or any bugs even though horses were next door and the dam was right at your campsite. It was so beautiful, peaceful and the perfect stop over given the proximity to the motorway. The only thing we would recommend is a sign for the camp so we know where to turn in from the road. There was no number and gps took us to the wrong driveway and we couldn’t find anywhere to turn around for a few kms (22ft caravan). We found it by looking closely at the map and cross referencing with a pin on Hipcamp but that’s different to the actual address. When you arrive the sign is so tiny it was hard to even read so would be super helpful for people pulling caravans on an 80km road to see where to pull in clearly. We would absolutely come back every time we travel north or south from there.

The perfect little getaway. Easy directions and instructions from Yara. Got lucky with only two other campers. Having the flowing river and grass with no mosquitoes made it a pleasure. Facilities and fireplace gaves us a great camping experience. Definitely recommend to others.

We enjoyed our two night stay with our 2 kids who spent all their time in the river which is shallow, warm, clean and sandy. Yara sent clear notes about how to find the place, and we also got some firewood and fresh eggs. There were two other quiet families there, and tons of space. There are bathrooms built inside a converted shipping container - 2 ensuite style with toilet/sink/hot shower and 2 extra toilets. It said 'no potable water' in the description but we drank rainwater from the provided tank and it tasted fine. Grassy campsite space was well-mowed and remarkably bindi free.
