For an absolutely unique camping experience, head to Mono Lake, where the mountains stretch high and wide, the water is salty, and the views are as scenic as they come. This expansive lake lies at the foot of the ruggedly handsome Sierra Nevadas, just outside of Yosemite National Park's east entrance and its rich ecosystem brings birds from far and wide to these fertile shores. For adventure-filled camping, head to California's Inyo National Forest. Located just west of Mono Lake, a stay in these forested mountains offers easy access to the lake by day. Spend your visit taking in Mono Lake's impressive ancient limestone "tufa towers," or hike through the willow and cottonwood forests along the shore for a view of Mono Lake from every angle. Stick around until sunset to see the Sierra Nevada sky painted pink and red. Nearby campgrounds range from secluded, wooded sites with quick access to great hiking, all the way to camping at 10,000 feet with epic starry skies and mountain views. Plenty of nearby creeks and quiet lakes mean you don't have to sleep on the banks of Mono Lake (pro tip: you can't) in order to enjoy waking up beside peaceful waters.
