To check out a different side of Arizona and get a glimpse at how life might have been before the white man settled here, head to Canyon de Chelly National Monument (pronounced “shay”). This is Navajo country and the entire park exists within the Navajo Reservation. The area has been inhabited for over 5,000 years, and Navajo families still live off the land here. You can skim the surface on your own by visiting the overlooks, doing a scenic drive, or hiking around up top, or you can go in deep with a canyon tour by an authorized guide and catch some seldom seen sights from an in-depth perspective (definitely the right choice if you can swing it). Camping is available, too, with a permit from the Navajo Nation. Red rocks and surreal canyon landscapes will seduce you and the jaw-dropping sunsets and mystical vibes will seal the deal. It is a special place indeed.
