Camp Shenandoah Meadows

First of all, the property is beautiful. Unfortunately, we had a couple of issues that tarnished our experience. First, many reviews discuss enjoying the cats on the property, so we knew to expect them even though we aren't "cat people." What we didn't expect was the persistent presence of the cats. We tried eating a picnic outside and one of the cats kept trying, and occasionally succeeding in stealing food off the table despite our repeated efforts to shoe it away. The cats forceful presence also scared our two year old. This was annoying, but we knew to expect cats, so we accepted it and moved our meal into the bunkhouse. What we did not expect was that even when we went inside, the cats would wait by the doors and every time we had to go outside to get something or use the bathroom, a cat would run inside the bunkhouse - again scaring our two year old. We messaged the host asking if they could be do anything and we were told "there is nothing I can do about the cats." We then sent another message to the host because the wi-fi wasn't working and got no response (we could connect to the router, but there was no internet). We had booked two nights, and decided we couldn't do a second night, so we asked the host if we could get a refund for the second night. The host never responded. A refund would have been nice, but the lack of concern, unhelpfulness, and non-response from the host was much more frustrating than the lack of a refund.

Site 2 - Retreat at Shenandoah Meadows

This place is awesome! We had the campground to ourselves and it was amazing!! Amazing views, the bathhouse was easily located! The directions were spot on. The camp cat is adorable, though there is two. One is a little more wild and the other one is very calm. This place overmet our expectations!!

Our time there was nice & peaceful. The cabin was well stocked, comfortable, & warm. The restroom facility was comfortable to use, particularly with the heater in there! The resident black cats were a welcoming addition as well - they love to play and snuggle, and appear to be well fed lol. The access to firewood was great as well, though inventory was low. The owner was very responsive and kind. 10/10 would stay again!

Site 1 - Retreat at Shenandoah Meadows

My friend and I stayed for Saturday through Tuesday and couldn’t be more impressed by the camp and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. The views are beautiful (sunrise especially), the camp is clean, the bathrooms and showers were better then my dorm hall in college so for camping it was a 10/10, the showers were warm, and the host was quick to respond with any problems we had. Despite being pretty far out in nowhere I had only a little issue finding service. Only note of warning is that the roads need some serious maintenance. The road into camp was rough but my tiny sedan was able to do it but the roads to the campsite section would have been completely inaccessible to most cars with less clearance. Overall amazing, I fully plan to return next time I’m in the area and have already recommended it to others.

great option for winter “camping” with our dog - we were able to get out for local day hikes, enjoy a fire in the evening, and retreat to a heated cabin.

Tiny Cabin 1

My husband, daughter, and I stayed here over the weekend. The location was peaceful and absolutely gorgeous with the autumn leaves. The cabin was cozy, and the accommodations were pleasant. The bathhouse was well kept, clean, and maintained. We hung out with our cabin neighbors over a bonfire, and the whole experience was memorable. We will definitly be coming here again.

We really loved our stay here, such a beautiful location! There’s already a fire pit, grill, hammock and table which is great. Camp cats are a plus for us!!! Usually we tent camp but we have a baby and with the cold nights/mornings this time of year, this was perfect. Loved being close to showers and restrooms - only downfall was people from another location drove multiple cars down and used our already shared bathhouse. The first night was fine as this didn’t happen but the second night and morning there was at least 10 additional people which really made it difficult. We left an hour later than planned because they filled the bathhouse our morning of departure and we had to wait for them to leave. Not sure if this is typical but that was a negative for us as it’s already shared with other cabins.

Site 6 - Retreat at Shenandoah Meadows

This was our 2nd time group camping at Shenandoah Medows. One of the best HipCamp finds for us. Its a gem of a camp ground. The manager is responsive and very helpful. The location is epic with clear views of gorgeous sky. Will go back again next year foe group camping.

Overall we had an okay experience. We thought site 6 was private but were met with quite the opposite experience. If you plan on booking site 6 we would highly suggest booking site 5. Our first night we listened to a couple argue all night, they left after that thankfully. Unfortunately, we had 42 people show up to all spend the night at site 5, they were partying throughout the night and the relaxing weekend away turned into anything but. It would be nice to know these things prior to spending any money on a camp site. If your goal is a peaceful outdoor trip, this may not be the location for you.

Site 2 - Retreat at Shenandoah Meadows

Shenandoah Meadows is recommended for casual campers like me who wants nature but still has access to water, bath, and toilet (short hike). The site is clean and has nice shady place for tent (don't bring the large dome 8 person tent; might not fit). The place is wide enough for campgroups. Stargazing at night is amazing if weather permits. The scenery of shenandoah is on full diaplay. The only downside i can think now is the rough road entrance (sedans can still go thru but it will be rocky)

These were probably the loveliest and largest camp sites I've seen. The views were absolutely incredible! It was definitely out of the way if everything which is a pro for the quiet, but a con for the distance from some of the more popular trails. The bathhouse was great and well supplied, albeit a bit of a trek from the campsite. The only complaints I have are for the incredibly large divots in the roads and the fact that our campsite, number 3, seemed to be the only one without a picnic table.

We had a wonderful camping experience! The views were beautiful, and everything was clean and well maintained. We stayed at Retreat #5 — the bath house (Bath House 2) was just a short walk away, which was convenient.

The site was easy to locate, and within walking distance to the firewood storage. It can be a bit noisy as this site is the closest to the access road and main camp amenities.

Beautiful scenery and the campgrounds were well kept. The bunkhouse was exactly as described/pictured. It was perfect for what we needed to introduce the camping lifestyle to our kids before taking the plunge and tent camping with them :)

The Bunkhouse was an absolutely amazing place for a group literally for over 20 or more I believe! It comes with two common areas and a fridge with a coffee machine and surprisingly wifi! What can not be understated is the campfire area is loaded with natural seating and a grill . If you are worried about comfortable bathroom, do not worry, they have a bathhouse that comes with a both shower and comfort room side and the other half is a multitude of bathrooms and showers equally.

Great view of stars, nice flat camping surface and tons of options within one site to set up. Cool access to different trails. Respect neighbors and we loved Ash the cat. Road up the hill is definitely difficult and took us two tries. Bathhouse was a long walk but we had a porta potty close by.

Site 6 - Retreat at Shenandoah Meadows

We really enjoyed The Meadows. The grounds were nicely maintained, grass trimmed, wood stocked, and a basic map of buildings on the land. The instructions before arrival were clear and helpful. We did have a few helpful insights though. The road in and out of the meadows has had a lot of washout and is a challenging drive with the huge rut, especially for sedan type vehicles or if another car approaches. There is also a really intense decline and incline you have to drive through in order to get to the primitive sites. We were able to do this is in my Camry, but would have liked a heads up because we could have taken a 4WD. Especially if there had been rain. The site itself was wonderfully shaded and had the best view of the mountains. There were sites nearby but it was quiet for the most part. We heard voices echoed from sites 4 and even from a large group down the road, but everyone respected the quiet time hours. The people who had previously stayed there left some mess, including alcohol cans, and a disassembled plastic picnic table…? Strange. We were able to use it to level the other one for cooking though which was nice. Some info about nearby places to explore, and a map of property trails and boundaries could be helpful too. Lastly, the pool was closed over 2 weeks earlier than the hosts message had stated. Relatively disappointing there was no communication on this. Overall, we had a great time and will recommend to groups interested in a Hip Camp.

I really loved campsite 5! Incredible mountain view. Massive open space for the tent and around the campfire. I also really appreciated that it was raining and there was someone there putting dry wood into a covered space so those who purchased it could still make a fire. Would stay again! Things to consider: - You need a vehicle with high clearance to get to the campsites - most campers do but something you should know! The road is bumpy and has a high pitch in one particular spot. - I don’t usually expect much from camping showers/toilets. However, be prepared. It wasn’t very clean and the water had a strong sulfur smell.

Site 4 - Retreat at Shenandoah Meadows

This has been my favorite campsite to date! It was large, private, and clean. Plenty of amenities to enjoy for myself and my pup. This was a perfect place to camp and unwind after hiking around Shenandoah National Park. The stargazing opportunities were incredible when we were there. I think Site 3 & 4 were probably the most ideal for myself with a dog. I HIGHLY recommend this site for anyone visiting the area.

We loved the peace and quite at our site, however the one small trail that is on the property is not maintained and overgrown. We made it maybe half way and had to turn around. I would suggest maintaining that trail so people can enjoy a little stroll around the campsite
