Featuring an amazing rustic cabin, nine riverside campsites, along with paddock and bush sites, all 4WD accessible and two equally stunning 2WD accessible sites. You’ll share our spaces with kangaroos, wallabies, emus, echidnas, deer, platypus and more. Enjoy some optional extras, including Tammie's home made bread, farm fresh, free range eggs, or one of our range of grazing platters, home made jams or hot chocolate kits. Or pamper yourself with a Crystal reiki session, or tarot reading. The 2WD accessible sites feature spectacular views to the right, towards Mt Panorama and Mt Horrible and towards Mt Canobolas to the left. Each campsite offers its own unique features for you to enjoy and a hand crafted pit toilet is accessible to those camped along the river bank. There are many spots in the various 4WD accessible paddocks around the property to camp to your hearts content. Plenty of room for children to run around in a safe farm environment further away from the river, so choose your spot, under the shade of a tree or out in the open. PLEASE NOTE: Our paddock sites are NOT located on the river bank. These sites are 500 - 700 metres walk from the river but this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to swim. All guests are able to access the river, we simply ask that you don’t encroach on other guests campsites whilst doing so. Paddock sites are great for those with small children who don’t want to be too close to the river, or for larger, noisier groups who’d like to be isolated from other guests. If you’re not into actual camping in tent or trailer form, come spend some time in our insulated rustic cabin that has been lovingly built by Damo. Featuring an open floor plan with a queen bed, a bunk bed and two singles, this space can accomodate up to 6 people. Sheets are provided but guests will need to provide their own blankets and pillows. Heating and cooking are facilitated by a cast iron wood fire, featuring two hot plates and an oven space and there is a cold water sink for drinking water and dishes. Some wood will be provided for your stay. Once this is gone, you may purchase extra. A small fridge will facilitate some food and drink storage but you may need to bring a portable fridge/esky as well. A gas powered shower can be hired if required. A new long drop is under construction closer to the cabin but for the moment, feel free to use the communal long drop near the camp kitchen. A rechargeable lantern is supplied for you to take with you. The cabin is solar powered, with usb points for phone charging, but no other power points. There is also an outdoor fire pit, and outdoor setting if you’d prefer to cook outside, or simply sit around it enjoying the ambience of being in nature. Wood for the fire pit will need to be brought in, or feel free to collect fallen wood from around the property. Please DO NOT cut down or deface any standing trees. A fantastic location for a girls or boys weekend, somewhere for the elders or non camping family members to stay, or for a weekend away with the family camping without actual camping!

Hi, we really enjoyed our 2-day stay. It's a nice spot with a secluded mountain and trees, a big green area for outdoor activities, a river next to the camping, and amazing stargazing. Damien and Tammie were super helpful and accommodating. I'd totally recommend checking this place out for a new adventure.

We’ve had another amazing camping trip at Watton Air Strip. This is our third trip and second staying at Drovers Run. We have always found the camp sites to be well maintained and clean. We enjoy the additional privacy and elevation at Drovers Run which is why we selected this site for the second time. Drovers Run provides a great outlook and the river is only a quick walk away. Even though you are further away, you can still hear the rapids at night. Thanks Damien & Tammie for another amazing stay.

The river is perfect for a swim or just relaxing, and the property adds a unique Aussie country charm. Steep 4WD access, great hosts, clean and tidy, lots of wildlife and dog-friendly too. Overall lovely place, amazing views, great flat camping spots, river was great, toilets a bonus, rubbish disposal a bonus, hosts very friendly. Down side horses a little over friendly which can be a problem with small children (followed all hosts rules regarding not feeding horses etc)... they came right into camp space and we had trouble getting them to leave. As stated by hosts and other reviews.... access is 4wd only which is fine for trailers and solo 4wds. Did ask host prior about caravan and stated it was okay if 4wd. Road is in poor condition down to camp spot and quite steep in places, as well as really rutted out. Definitely not caravan friendly.

Large 2WD/ Caravan Hillside Site

Spectacular views! Was able to see all the beautiful surroundings, including spectacular sunrises & sunsets! The squiggly gums were amazing & the site was well looked after. The walk down to the river allowed you to appreciate the natural bushland, with the native wildflowers & wildlife. The river & surroundings were beautiful with a platypus, dragonflies, beetles, Willie Wagtails, finches, geckos & too many other insects I have not seen since childhood to name. It was a true delight, with running clear water tumbling over rocks worn smooth over many years, providing a lovely bubbling brook. The water was just the right temperature for a swim & my dogs ( & myself) absolutely loved it. It was amazing to see evidence high up in the trees of previous historic floods & it’s hard to believe how nature can be so bold & beautiful at the same time. To add to the wonderful karma, there were horses, pony & alpacas who just peacefully & casually strolled through the grounds near the river & were extremely friendly. The alpacas even thought my extremely woolly dogs were one of them! 🤣 Tammie, Damien & family were wonderful, kind & caring hosts who stepped in to help when required without hesitation. I was truly grateful for their help & friendship. Can highly recommend & will be returning, hopefully with an AWD/4WD so I can camp by the river. 😀

We loved the Watton Airstrip camp. The camping areas are beautifully grassed, against the river. Damien and Tammie are very helpful, even guiding us up the track out of the camp site, due to its rough nature. So gratefully for there guidance. They are also very conscious of making sure everyone respects everyone that is camping. Having the horses and Alpacas roaming around lovely. You definitely need a 4WD to get to and from this camp site.

This site sits on a small mountain above the main campsite, offering a more private and secluded experience. The large campsite has a big central tree that provides great shade, though the ground is dry with debris rather than grass. It’s a short trek down the hill to the river (as noted in the booking), and the toilets are also a bit of a walk — we often packed the car to take our gear down. Compared to Banjos Run, which we also stayed at, we preferred the grassy sites and river proximity there. However, Drovers Run does have lovely views, and with the animals down at the main camp, our dog could roam off-leash since she stays close to camp.

Stayed: 6 nights across two site locations Would I return? Yes, absolutely — with the right expectations and preparation. Setting: A lush grassed riverside site with gum trees for some shade. The wide river had a few deeper pockets perfect for a refreshing summer dip. Wildlife highlight: Roaming horses and alpacas wandering among the campsites were a genuine delight and added real charm to the property. Hosts’ presence: The owners were on site regularly, inspecting and checking in. It was clear they care about guests enjoying the property. Track conditions: The 1.5 km descent is steep and rocky — tougher than expected. 4WD is essential, and experience matters. After rain, the climb out would be risky. With heavy traffic, the track deteriorated, but our group (including two campers and a caravan) made it out safely. Arrival timing: Aim to arrive in daylight to assess the descent and choose your line carefully. Navigation and clarity: We stayed across two locations, and the booking system/layout was hard to follow at first. Suggestion: A simple site map included directly in Hipcamp listing would be helpful when selecting and navigating to sites. Shower hire: The hired shower was a canvas bag with a shower rose. Being far from the river made carrying and hanging it impractical, and getting direct sun was difficult. At $30 you can buy it for $25 new. Overall, the property offers stunning views and lovely campsites and great for small groups.

Fantastic camping spot. Big open space with sites close to Macquarie River. I prefer big spaces between each camp site, this was a little close but other campers were so polite it was not an issue. I suggest a 4x4 to access this space, it is fairly steep and parts of the track have scattered boulders which make it slightly tuff. There is wonderful wild life, birds and water life. Swimming spots range from deep spots to mild rock rapid ponds. I will return sooner than later.

Picturesque views and flat green campsites. Curious horses and various wildlife of native, domestic and feral quality to be found. The River is deep enough in sections to swim but may require trudging around someone’s site to get to. Damien and Tammie were helpful and answered any questions I had and while I didn’t see them while I was there checking in was easy enough. If you’re worried about the “4WD Access” only parts I would recommend at minimum a taller AWD SUV to get up and down but any dedicated 4WD will walk up it. A quiet and scenic spot with little to no downsides (unless you’re afraid of horses).

The campsite is great. The areas are spread apart with enough space that your campsite doesn’t feel too close to anyone else’s. The river has a deep section to cool off and the amenities are cleaned daily. The owners are super friendly and just want you to have the best stay. The track in is definitely made for cars with a bit of clearance but it is well worth the decent down to the river front.

The ‘Great’ spot

The Deep Spot 4WD Only

The Deep Spot is a beautiful campsite on a large cleared section of land at the banks of the Macquarie River. The allocated sites are spaced so that there can be 20+ metres between campers. We realised, one day in, that the deep spot is also the prime swimming spot along this stretch of river. This was great for us as we’re quite social and happy to meet the other campers enjoying the Airstrip as they wander down to the ‘beach’. We had assumed that each site had its own river access and had set up on each side of the path so we invited people coming by to walk through our camp village to get wet. We love meeting all the dogs for a pat too. Either side of the deep spot (50mish away) there are lots of rocks and logs which make those areas more like rapids. We had paddle boards which we floated about on, but the river at low flow isn’t good to put a kayak in. Tammie was really friendly and we had a great chat when she delivered our eggs. The drop toilet was kept in reasonable condition with sawdust to toss down, and there were two portaloos in place across NYE, although they filled and ran out of water quickly. We didn’t use the camp kitchen but it was a great-looking shed with all the amenities and sheltered tables/chairs. The tank of water on the side was very much appreciated too. A great spot to camp, with a bit of a fun/scary 4WD track to get in and out. Ticks all the boxes.

A truly special bush escape

The Deep Spot 4WD Only

This was our second stay at Watton Airstrip and it’s just as special as the first. Camping among Tammie and Damo’s rescue horses roaming freely is a real privilege. We came with a camper trailer; the rocky track to the river is manageable, just air down your tyres for the trip back uphill. Even over Christmas when fully booked, the sites felt comfortable and generously spaced apart. Daily swims in the river, watching cod jump, the resident platypus at sunset, kangaroos feeding in the grasses and even a deer … it’s truly a place that nourishes the soul.
