Overview

About

Where the Yellowstone River meets the Missouri sits an important piece of American history. This historic site was once the principal fur trading post of the American Fur Company in the 1800s.

For 40 years this was where local tribes like the Assiniboine, Crow, Cree, Ojibway, Blackfoot, Hidatsa, and Mandan came to trade. Items like buffalo robes and other furs were traded for beads, guns, blankets, knives, cookware, and cloth.

While the original building is no longer standing, local citizens and historians launched a campaign to preserve the historic fort site and rebuild the post. Thanks to their hard work, visitors to the site can now enjoy this piece of living history.

Summertime at the fort is the best time to visit with many annual events. One fun gathering is the Rendezvous where over 100 Native Americans from across North America demonstrate traditional skills and customs. Another great event is the Indian Arts Showcase, where you can learn about Native American history and culture, through music, traditional crafts and lectures by local tribal historians and elders.
