Brown's Gap (Firepit campsite)

We stayed one night in high knob. Our arrival was later than we had planned and it was raining (none of this is the hosts fault). The site felt like a tight fit for our 18ft camper. Even though pictures showed comparable campers in this spot. I think the photos were a little misleading, the site had a considerable dip towards the rear and finding a spot to level the camper was a bit difficult, the rain didn’t help. We ended up finding a happy medium and almost didn’t have enough water hose to reach the pole. Once the camper was level the tongue was so low one of the stabilizers was one turn from the ground already. Another note worth mentioning is the water pressure at the pole was almost non existent, not a problem for us as we usually fill the tank and use the pump in the camper. Overall this was a one night stop onto another location further away from home. I think if we were in the area again we would book something in the field near the entrance it seemed more spacious and wouldn’t have the leveling issues we ran into. Unfortunately we didn’t really get a chance to look around as we arrived in the dark and left in the dark.

I loved my experience here especially at the browns gap site! the whole land is on a slight grade but browns gap and others had leveled areas meant for tent placement. showers and bathrooms were very clean and had hot water. The dog Abba was awesome and loves to greet everyone. At certain points the livestock or other campers dogs can be loud but it beats camping at other crowded campgrounds. definitely reccomend especially for the price!

Quiet spot off I-81

Thos is a nice quiet spot in the Shenandoah Valley, especially suitable for a place to come back to after a day of hiking or exploring the various caverns or historical places nearby. I have used it twice now as an overnight stop on my way up or down I-81. I camp solo (with my dog) in a small 13 foot camper pulled behind my Jeep. I have stayed both times in the High Knob spot that offers electric and water hook ups, which is great. It is a very uneven spot, and leveling up is difficult alone. The toilet, shower, and outdoor clean up sink are great. Nathan offers.wood and eggs which can be ordered ahead of your arrival. I had to contact him when I arrived both times and he was very attentive. I recommend this spot.

Yellow Cliffs Mountain

ended up camping at big meadow, which was a better spot than my first booked campsite, which had some tarps with standing water - causing lots of mosquitos etc. i want to be gentle because it seems theres been some changing of hands / help, but there were some strewn about tents / tarps/ left behind cots around, tables deteriorating- but it did the job and was grateful for a toilet and trash disposal! maybe a bit less well maintained than previously.

Fridley's Gap

Overall, we enjoyed our trip. It did rain off and on part of the weekend but, we still made the best of it. We visited the Melrose Caverns which were so beautiful and interesting. The campsite was not level, however the description did tell us that. The animals around were kinda noisy in the mornings (cows across the street, goats next door, and the geese on property). We didn't find it annoying, kind of comical honestly, but worth mentioning. The farm dog on property was so sweet and came to visit us daily. Do put your things away because the geese also visit and they are very nosy!! haha. The bath house was clean (not so much with the rain but, not the owner's fault) and the shower was hot. All a camper can ask for!! Honestly, my only negative is that the fence to the property needs to be fixed. It was falling apart and did not give a sense of safety. Also, we bought 2 bundles of wood. One was delivered and I had to message to remind the owner for the second. Also, you can get it quite a bit cheaper in town. If you are ok paying for the convenience tax, then go for it. haha.

Melrose Cavern

It’s definitely a little cramped and dirty, but it gets the job done if you need a tent site. It has a hot shower and toilet/bathroom which is great! The tent sites are too close together, and some of the younger campers arrived after 11pm to start setting up. Not great if you have younger ones. Apa, the farm dog was the sweetest thing and was a great host. this place would be ideal for college kids and 4x4 enthusiasts. Not so much for family camping.

Big Meadow

Great spot! Rocky so definitely put a tarp down before you put your tent up. Not so flat. Overall, great though! Convenient bathhouse and dishwashing station. Felt private. Nathan was super responsive whenever we had questions. The eggs were some of the best I've had in a long time! Definitely check out Old Hill Cider nearby and if you're into hiking: Church Rock has some amazing views!

Woodsy Sites

This is our 3rd Hipcamp. What I loved was the “private campground” feel. There are other sites on the property, spaced well enough that we had plenty of room and not crammed in like a family campground. We choose this one because we were passing through for one night and it had a shower/toilet. Loved all the trees and wooded feel and privacy without a bunch of activity and rules. The sites are not very level so that is one thing to be aware of. And some debris laying about, dirty chairs, etc.. but overall, Nathan was super helpful and accommodating. The toilet room was clean and we loved Apa, the camp guardian dog.

Very peaceful camping site. The restroom and shower house is clean and well tended. Looked forward to daily visits from the guard dog. She is so friendly and beautiful. Nathan has fresh eggs and firewood available for purchase as well. He is a wonderful host.

Nathan had a good set up and I appreciated the bathroom and shower! The spot was perfect for my tent and out of the way of other campers. The neighbors had goats, roosters, and cows, so if you’re good with that noise then everything else is perfect!

Nice, out of the way, quiet

This is place I would come back to. But next time I'll make sure to get there before dark. It's name is "meadow", but its really more woods than meadow. I used 4WD to get up the gravel hill without spinning. All the sites are marked, but hard to see after dark. Very quiet and peaceful. A skunk was spooked by something in the middle of the night. S/he let me know ... the price of living in nature. Nathan's dog is very friendly and wasn't bothered by my hyper dog.

Quiet and Quaint

Melrose Cavern

Nathan was a pleasure to deal with. He stayed on top of all my messages and replied quickly. Considering he was in the middle of a family emergency, I was surprised at how attentive he was. The property was nice. Apa the dog was shy at frat then once she warmed up, she was the sweetest up she was a big teddy bear.

Old Rag Mountain

Nate was very helpful when we arrived after dark. It was difficult to see where to go at night. Arrive during daylight. When we were there we were the only camper in our section, (old rag mountain) was the site we had. Campsites go by name, not number. Very peaceful and quiet at night. Cute ducks come around in the morning. Right in the middle of farm land. You'll hear the occasional rooster, and tractors. We would return for sure if in the area.

Such a great place for us to stay on our road trip. Traveling with kids can be expensive and I appreciated this affordable space. We tented in a big yard here and had access to a toilet and shower. It was close to the highway and a quiet place to sleep while still being in nature.

Nice collection of campsites!

Camp site was nice, with a good fire ring, flat pad for a tent, and plenty of places to hang hammocks. The animals both in the yard and next door were a joy to have around. Flushing toilet and shower work as advertised complete with hot water and outdoor sink area for doing dishes. Look forward to returning.

Nice campsite with good amenities. I just did a quick stop for the night so I cant get too detailed but the property was nice and Nathan was good to communicate. I’d stay here again if I was in the vicinity.

I had a good experience, but there are pros and cons so it depends on what you’re looking for. Overall, I would recommend this space for people who are just using it as a home base for exploring and won’t be spending a ton of time there. Or for an overnight spot to sleep would be great too. Pros: excellent price for water and electric site, flush toilet & sink, hot water shower with great pressure (put in some shelving and hooks!), quiet and peaceful, great stargazing, dry firewood delivery, not far from stores or gas stations, the High Knob site i stayed in was relatively level. Cons: the entire place was just a little run down (dirty dishwashing station with broken faucet, sites need cleaned up of weeds & debris scattered, etc.), sites are close with very little privacy, my dog hated the guardian dog (personal problem - he’s not dog friendly so its nothing she did wrong necessarily. She was a very sweet girl but don’t bring your dog if they’re protective of you or their space. She will come on your site and say hi), 45 minutes to just the entrance to Shenandoah NP, but over an hour to get to hikes & visitor centers.

This place was fine but not as amazing as many other places where we have stayed. It was a good place to use as a home base for exploring the area but not as pretty or private as I was hoping. I love the presence of the geese, but they leave a lot of droppings around our campsite which I found slightly unsanitary. The facilities worked well and the campground was otherwise clean and convenient.

Nathan was a very nice and attentive host. I bought his eggs which were wonderful and a nice bundle of wood. I did end up leaving earlier as it was Labor Day weekend and it was way to crowded for me and lots of mosquitoes (I was in a spot in the woods) and I’m allergic to them. When I hooked up my camper I had a reading on my surge protector for “reverse polarity “ I just decided to leave even though Nathan checked it out and said it was ok. I did not request my money back since he did the best he could to accommodate me.
