Camping on the Hazel River

We had an absolutely wonderful stay at this cabin! I communicated with Peggy through the HipCamp app, and she was very responsive and helpful. When we arrived, Tony met us at the parking area, showed us to the cabin, and took the time to explain how everything worked. He was incredibly kind, accommodating, and genuinely wanted to make sure we had a great experience. The cabin itself was spotless, rustic, and very cozy — exactly what we were hoping for. It has just the right amount of amenities: a small fridge, microwave, toaster oven, running water, and just enough hot water for a quick shower. The outdoor shower was one of our favorite parts — it felt peaceful and refreshing every time we used it. Before our trip, we asked if there was a way to cook outside, and Tony went above and beyond. He actually built a wonderful fire pit setup designed for cooking, which we used every day. It was such a fun and memorable part of our stay, and Tony even provided all the firewood we could possibly need. The property is beautiful, well maintained, and surrounded by about one to two miles of lovely hiking trails. It was quiet, private, and felt like our own little hideaway in nature. Tony gave us plenty of space while still being available if we needed anything. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience — highly recommend this spot for anyone looking for a cozy, peaceful escape!

The Perfect Serenity Getaway!

This rustic cabin is a true serenity gem! From the moment we arrived, Tony was fantastic—he met us personally, helped us settle in, and made us feel right at home. The cabin itself is full of sweet charm, thoughtfully stocked with all the little necessities, and so well maintained. We spent our days walking along the river and hiking nearby trails, then ended our evenings cozied up by the fire, playing games and soaking in the peace. We truly didn’t want to leave and return to real-life adulting! The location is perfect—close to Skyline Drive and conveniently near stores—yet when you return, it feels like your own private slice of paradise. We’re already looking at dates to come back soon!

5 Stars – A Hidden Gem by the River! Our group absolutely loved the stay at this riverside campsite! The sound of the river at night was incredibly soothing. The site itself felt private and tucked away—perfect for relaxing and disconnecting. The fire pit was a great touch and made evenings extra cozy. Overall, such a unique and tranquil experience. Overall, my experience was unsatisfactory. Had I known the I would have to walk through the mud to unload my gear and get to my site, that the sites had recently flooded because they are on a riverbank prone to flooding, that the “bathroom” sink drained onto my feet while I was using it, that my car would get stuck in the mud, and that the inoperable shower was at least 1/4 mile away, up a steep muddy hill, I would never have booked this place. The shower was not working, which I was told was the case, one week before arriving. So I could have cancelled at that time, but I figured I would just “rough it” for three nights. I only stayed 1 night. I told the host when I left. I was told that I could have been moved to a different site, but from what I could tell, they were all in the flood plane. The detailed waiver I signed, I realized, was to prevent me from suing if the river flooded and my car, my gear and I were washed away. Camp here at your own risk, which is substantial.

My recent camping trip to Scot and Peggy's property was an absolute delight, offering a truly peaceful and secluded escape. From the moment of booking, Scot and Peggy were incredibly responsive and communicative, making the entire process seamless and stress-free. Their clear communication ensured there were no issues whatsoever. The campsite itself was ideally situated right on the river, providing several convenient access points along the various sites. This was a fantastic feature, allowing for easy enjoyment of the water. Beyond the individual sites, there was a large, inviting field and common area, perfect for guests who wished to gather and socialize. What truly stood out was the quiet and secluded nature of the site. It offered a beautiful and serene environment, perfect for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. It was a truly peaceful stay, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a tranquil camping experience.

I absolutely love coming to this campsite! This was my second trip to Peggy’s and she is a fantastic host. The kids had a great time playing in the river and chasing the frogs around, we did get to see a black snake which my son was chasing trying to make a new friend. Unfortunately I had to cut my trip short due to a family emergency and Peggy was very understanding about the situation. She offered for us to come back another time to use the rest of our nights so we don’t lose them and I have to admit, I can’t wait till we go again. Five stars all the way just a great site to visit with your family.

Beautiful location on the river. We really enjoyed our stay. The kids went bananas for the river—playing in the mud, riding the rapids, and exploring. Incredible wildlife. So serene and peaceful. Thanks so much for having us. We plan to come back.

Another great stay (despite the rain!). The hosts are very friendly and easy to communicate with and the sites are very well maintained. The flushable toilet is bonus. We loved swimming in the Hazel on a hot day. There are three contiguous sites which are fairly private and an amazing common area with gazebo right on the river that would make a great location for a family reunion. Hope to be back with the kids and grandkids!

We loved camping at Hazel river! Beautiful, secluded spots by the river. Nice restroom nearby, showers and water a bit of a walk but it's a very scenic walk.

Magical little spot nestled along the hazel river. The hosts were accommodating and very easy to communicate with. We booked stairway to hazel river, but the entire place was empty so Scot told us to pick where we’d like. We ended up taking hoof ramp ( All sites are equally as beautiful but this site had a nice path down to the river for our girls). We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect stay. My husband and girls swam in the river, we hung a hammock over a patch of beautiful Virginia blue bells, we saw eagles and flocks of geese flying over us. It was wonderful and just over an hour away from us in Arlington. We will definitely be back - thank you Peggy and Scot!

Lovely stay!

What a great campsite! My boyfriend and I spent a day + night here and had such a lovely time. Our hosts were very friendly and easy to communicate with before, during and after the stay. Scot greeted us right away, showed us around, answered all of our questions and then left us in privacy. The land was so lush and serene with tons of wildflowers, trees and plant life. We enjoyed taking nature walks, setting up our hammock and making a bonfire with the plentiful amount of wood our host set up at our site (upon request). The river sounds added such a peaceful ambiance too. We even spotted a bald eagle! This site had everything we could've needed for a successful night of camping (even a flushing toilet and sink in a small outhouse). We felt very safe and relaxed in this green paradise. Overall, such a great spot! We plan on coming back and recommending it to friends!

This campsite was the most beautiful place I’ve camped. It’s very private, isolated and right on the Hazel River. The hosts we very friendly and delivered my firewood at my site. At night, there were no sounds other than nature and it was very dark; I could see so many stars ✨. I was sad to go and would return next year!!

Would recommend camping here! We stayed at stairway to hazel river and it was beautiful. Our dogs loved being close to the river and all the land we had access to. The host was quick to respond and gave us detailed info of everything so we had no questions!

Cabin at River hills

Would highly recommend the cabin at River Hills for a mountain getaway. Went on a 3 day 2 night weekend trip with the girlfriend & small dog, couldn’t have asked for a better reset. We arrived later Friday evening & Tony quickly met us at the camp meet up spot to show us to our cabin & get us more familiar with the mapping of his property upon our arrival. Cabin is 0.3 downhill walk from hazel river, with a private area to make a fire & grill by the river (you also will have a fire pit & gas grill at the cabin itself). We really enjoyed slow mornings walking the trails on the property & exploring in the river. Would highly recommend this location for small kids & dogs to get more comfortable with the outdoors & water, our little dog didn’t want to leave after trying to catch tadpoles swimming in the river.. we didn’t want to either since you can swim & float in the river. We definitely will be coming back & look forward to trying out the camping spots on the property. Thank you Peggy & Tony making our stay one to remember

Peaceful area set up right off the river. Had a good time with my family and other campers were respectful as well. Peggy and Scott have some small accommodations such as a toilet/sink and trash can out there so it made it a bit easier with the kiddo and wife. Great stay and will be back again.

Peggy was so sweet and easy to communicate with before booking! She answered all of our questions (quickly!) Property is GORGEOUS! There’s three total camping sites - we booked hoof + stairway (which are right next to each other) of them with a party of 8. There is a fire at both spots, and a picnic table at stairway. There’s also a communal campfire and table with lights already set up at night. All three spots are right on the river so we had a great day docking our tubes and chairs in the water, and strolling the short trail on the property. There’s a water refill and an outdoor shower at the top of the property (about a 5 min drive from where you stay.) there’s also firewood and tubes for rent! Scott her son will take trash away too. It’s about 45 minutes into Shenandoah park - it took us about that to old rag trailhead! Would 10000% stay here again and big recs!

Camping at River Hills

A bathroom, shower, potable water, a creek the kids can play in! Even a pagoda to eat under in the shade, or provide shelter from the rain. Its a really solid place, and I highly recommend it. :)

Riverside serenity but not the site

We enjoyed tent camping here for two days - we were at the River Bank site. The river is nice, and camping is always fun. However, there is room for improvement. The camp sites are not equal even though priced the same. We didn’t get the site we booked. First, they didn’t put us at the site we booked. We booked the site stairway to Hazel, and when we arrived a family was already there fully set up. Second, the shower and water spigot are actually a mile away, back up at the main farm. The toilet is riverside next to the campsites but not the shower and water. Last, the site is too expensive at $75 a night for what it is. Stairway to hazel is the best site being next tot he communal area, has access to the river, and has level ground and a picnic table. The next site also has a great view of the river and cowfield across it - also a cooking surface. The site we had did not have a picnic table or surface.. and again we booked Stairway to Hazel for the same $75/night

I had a great time camping at the Hazel River. The campsite is directly on the creek, with a beautiful view. There is a nice common and area all facilities were exactly as described. The check in was quick and easy, and the hosts were kind and welcoming. Would definitely recommend staying here.
