This park is not just a place to stay; it’s an experience that keeps visitors returning year after year. Established between 1961 and 1962, Lake Hawkins is one of four small lakes in Wood County, designed with earthen dams for flood control by the Sabine River Authority. Nestled on Little Sandy Creek, which flows into the Sabine River, this picturesque lake spans 776 acres and is nourished by several springs, ensuring its waters remain clearer than many other lakes in East Texas. Even during severe droughts, the lake maintains a stable water level, making it a reliable spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Lake Hawkins Park, developed in 1990 in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, occupies approximately 55 acres, half of which is wooded. The park features around 1,800 feet of shoreline, including 700 feet of beautiful white-sand beach, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. In 2018, Wood County transitioned to private management for the park, enhancing its amenities and services.
