Located at the confluence of the Meramec River and Labarque Creek, my place (Matt's Place) is a ridge above a bottomland bowl of sorts. The old iron truss bridge here is likely built in 1910 and it has a survey marker from 1932. The creek has a nice little swimming hole, and a beach that is sometimes sand, sometimes, gravel, and sometimes a mix of both with some silt or even mud after a storm. It's peaceful down there to explore in the creek, wade while looking outward to an opening into the Meramec River. It's also fun to stand just at the mouth of the creek in the Meramec River. It's an awesome view upstream or downstream of tree lined banks, rock bluffs, and every now and then, passing boats, canoes, paddle boards, or kayaks. The old iron truss bridge hovers above the meeting of two waters. The water is cool and clean. Some fifty species of fish have been recorded in this creek, the most in all of Jefferson County and St Louis County. The bottomland has two levels, the lower bottoms down by the creek and the upper bottoms about a hundred feet from the creek. The upper bottoms has a clearing like a meadow with mowed grass. My favorite things to do here include gazing up at a cottonwood tree that must be sixty feet tall. It's leaves in a breeze are like a thousand hands waving hello. The bottomland meadow offers just enough sky to see bats dance in the dusk air between the trees, then fireflies as it gets darker yet. Up top is where I live. Just five miles off HWY 44 and HWY 109, at Eureka, MO, (30 minutes west of downtown St Louis, 18 minutes from Six Flags) this place sits on a ridge with great views above the Meramec River.

#3 Bottomland Meadow, Upper Terrace

100%

Tent site · Sleeps 25
Site 3 in the bottomland meadow is not typically a first choice when compared to site 1 on the ridge over looking the river, or site 2 down by the creek. It doesn't have as good a view and it's about 300 feet from the creek and river. It's also closer to the road. I may have blocked site 3 dates on the calendar and will consider making dates available upon request for folks who know this is not the first choice for most guests, but it's better than available alternatives for whatever reason. Site 3 is nice though. It's a grassy meadow under an enormous cottonwood plus many hackberries, elms, and paw paws. It's great for tossing a frisbee or horseshoes. There's plenty of room for several tents and a great location for a bonfire from foraged fallen branches. This site is mostly listed as an over flow site in such a case where the more popular sites are not available. There is a steep part gravel and part dirt lane to get there good enough for my old 4 wheel drive pickup when condition are not very wet from rain. If a guest does not have 4 wheel drive or if conditions are wet, it is best accessed by walking gear in from my main gravel driveway near house, or I can possibly shuttle your gear down there with my truck.

#1 River Ridge Bridge High Ground

Five miles off HWY 44 and HWY 109, at Eureka, MO, (30 minutes west of downtown St Louis, 18 minutes from Six Flags) this place sits on a ridge overlooking great views above the Meramec River. A century-old, abandoned, iron trapezoidal truss bridge is a beautiful feature aging in place above the confluence of Labarque Creek. The creek is just below the ridge and has sand and gravel beach with swimming holes, fishing, canoeing, or kayaking. All this is just a short walk, 500 feet or so, from my gravel driveway. One can drive down to the creek with a 4 wheel drive. We have a half-mile loop trail around the small property and just across the road is the Young Conservation Area and down the road 2 miles is Glassberg Conservation Area. This is a great base camp or picnic stop for a group floating downstream from Pacific Palisades Meramec River Access Ramp. Most people take out a mile and a half downstream at Allenton River Access Ramp (near Six Flags). We also have one bunny, 14 chickens, 3 goats, fresh eggs, a vegetable garden, honey bees, and blackberries in summer. Thousands of acres of adjacent parks, plus river access ramps for boats a few miles upstream or downstream. We can shuttle your kayaks or even lend you one of ours by request as an extra. You can camp up top on the ridge or driveway. Use toilet tent nearer campsites. You can camp down by the creek at site #2. If this site is booked, you may request that I open up site 3 for booking. I can shuttle your gear (coolers, tent, chairs) down there in my 4wd pickup truck upon request. In the spirit of full disclosure, one may hear the local road traffic from two-lane HWY FF which is just a few hundred feet from the campsite. It's not so bad. Hipcampers report they can tune it out and late at night it gets mostly quiet. The other disclosure is if we have had a lot of rain previous to your stay, the bottomland can be intolerably buggy and damp or even flooded in the bottomland. If mosquitos, flooding, or damp ground is ever a factor, full refunds are available even if you give it a try and decide to depart early. Otherwise, we see bald eagles, beavers, otters, hawks, great blue herons, bats (at night), and lots of other wildlife every day. Side note: We often block availability on weekdays, but if you don't mind an after 5 pm check-in, we may open up availability on a weekday such as a Friday night by request.

#2 Labarque Creek Bank Campsite

Site 2 or the creek camp is a basic and primitive site as close to the creek as possible and is a great site if you want to spend much of your time close to the water for swimming, fishing, or canoeing. Access to the creek or river by owner or other guests is potentially, shared, with permission to politely walk through site 2 to go for a swim or to put in or take out a canoe or kayak. Other than that, we will respect your privacy.

#5 Rough Cabin: Overlooking River

100%
(3)
Cabin · Sleeps 2 · 1 bedroom · 1 bed
The concrete block cabin (though very close to my house) has electricity, lights, a radio, an electric space heater, and an air conditioner. The cabin is very basic with electric but no indoor plumbing. It’s only about 15 feet by 20 feet. It has an old queen size bed, desk, fridge, microwave, butane stove, recliner chair, and big windows looking out over the river. Just outside the door is a small patio with an overhang to shelter from rain. Next to the patio is a nice campfire pit where one could also cook or just enjoy an evening fire. A hammock, a garden hose, a 100 gallon stock tank for taking a cold water dip is nearby. Parking for this site is in my driveway, just a few feet from the cabin. There is no indoor toilet in the cabin, but there is a toilet tent about a hundred feet walk down the ridge. This cabin is close to my house, a guest would likely see me sometimes and possibly my dog as we come in and out of the house. This is a site I usually leave "paused" and unavailable on Hipcamp, but sometimes make it available upon request or only once or twice a month. It may also make a nice studio or office for someone who needs to have a comfy place to get some remote work done. Wifi is available in the cabin and out on the patio.
