Oakland, MD · 1 site
Wild Yough is located in Southern Garrett County, Maryland very close to Herrington Manor State Park, Swallows Falls State Park, and the quaint mountain village of Oakland. The property adjoins thousands of acres of Garrett State Forest and hundreds of acres of state land along the Youghiogheny River. The world class Wisp resort and Deep Creek Lake are only minutes away. “Yough” is short for Youghiogheny River a state designated wild and scenic river which runs through the heart of the property. Wild Yough Glamping huts are part of more than 350 acres of private land, most of which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails. Youghiogheny is an Algonquin word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction”, or in the case of the Yough, North toward Ohio Pyle and Pittsburgh. This section of the river is designated as a protected scenic corridor and you will feel the quiet isolation when sitting on the Crooked Butt Bench overlooking the big horseshoe bend in the river at the far back corner of our property. And if the river is low during your visit, feel free to wade across to the other side – Wild Yough owns the entire peninsula of land on the other side of the river and this is also bordered by State land. The river banks are steep on the property, but the fishing for small mouth bass is exceptional. There is a small turn around on the path just beyond Crooked Butt Bench where you can take out your canoe, kayak, or inner tubes after floating the 2+ miles from the Oakland bridge. Just be prepared to walk your water craft back up to the house or Glamping site as there is no motorized access to the river. If you like to lay on the rocks in the sun or take the kids for some wading in the river, the best place is the farthest to walk to. Take the trail to “High Bluff”, then cross the Snyder property line (Permission for trail access only – do not leave trail!), then descend down and cross the bridge across Herrington Manor Creek (a stocked trout stream!). Wild Yough property is to your right along the river and there is a great place for lying in the sun, doing some fishing, or just wading into the cool waters of the Yough on a hot summer day.Learn more about this land:The idea is simple- our glamping site will offer a true camping experience without all the hassles and fuss. With 350 acres of private ground, adjacent to thousands of acres of state park and forest, Wild Yough offers plenty of space to spread out, stretch your legs, watch the deer, and howl with the coyotes. You won’t be packed into a row of RV’s or tents where you can hear your neighbor snoring. You won’t have to set up camp in the rain. And you’ll never have to sleep on the ground! You’ll have your own heated hut, warm soft bed, and private space for long evenings around the campfire. And our bathhouse and pavilion facilities are designed with comfort, cleanliness and relaxation in mind. Whispered about as a “best kept secret” of the area, New Germany State Park is a mountain gem that is now yours to explore. Tucked away between the epic expanse of Big Savage Mountain and Meadow Mountain, this place is overflowing with lush, green beauty and forested goodness. Early settlers (from Germany, of course) found this place to be near and dear to heart, reminding them of their homelands—thus the name. There are 10 miles of trails that are just begging to be roamed, offering up scenic views of the diverse woodland here. There is also a small lake that is prime for fishing, dipping, and some classic canoeing. When your soul is begging to be unpluged from technology, this is the place to come. Escape from the busy city bustle for a bit and let the camp vibes roll soak in.

This property and farm has been in our family for 3 generations. In 1964 my grandfather started the campground due to limited camping at New Germany. My father tells stories of it being filled with guests all summer long! Over the years there was few upgrades and now it's in need of a facelift. Landscaping, electric upgrades and bathhouse remodels were completed Spring 2021. We will continue to renovate in phases it's been a labor of love, but you can still see the beauty of this rural location and enjoy the peace and quiet. Hope you enjoy your stay. Lots of trees, shade and nature. It's located near New Germany State Park, 1.5 miles by car, less than a mile by foot. The state park has a lake and hiking trails. Garrett County has so much to offer, waterfalls, lakes, hiking, skiing, Amish gifts, history, fresh air, beautiful scenery. The campground was first started in 1964 by my grandparents, we are currently completing renovations in phases.

There’s plenty of fish in the, well... lake! As the name would suggest, Deep Creek Lake is most known for its water-related activities. Stocked with trout, walleye, bass, and yellow perch, fishers will certainly find a good catch. And with a 24-hour boat launch you have aquatic access mornin’, noon and night. If you decide to stay over, you’ve got a boatload of accommodation options, ranging from a primitive, forest structure to a glamped-out yurt to your trusty ol’ tent. Over 95% of the park consists of forest that has regenerated from the original stands of timber and transformed into an primo example of a maturing northern hardwood forest. Take a hike on Meadow Mountain and experience the peaceful beauty of this area for yourself.

Nestled in a historic building that once housed hundreds of dairy cows, our campground offers a unique blend of rustic charm and family warmth. This space has been the backdrop for countless lunches, laughter, and shared moments, making it a cherished gathering spot for generations. Every summer, our little green table transforms into a pizza haven for Friday night dinners, while also serving as a confidant for heavy conversations and heartfelt discussions. We can only imagine the tens of thousands of coffee cups that have been raised in celebration or comfort around this table. It has witnessed everything from joyous cheers to bittersweet tears, marking significant milestones like the moment owner Warren learned he would become “Pappy.” This table has been a stage for lively political debates and spirited football banter, where family meetings have taken place and new friendships have blossomed over the years. It has provided a resting place for weary heads after long days, and it has heard countless family stories, making everyone feel like they belong. Though it may appear simple, this sturdy table has stood strong through life’s ups and downs, embodying the essence of family and connection. We invite you to join us around our beloved green table soon, where memories are made and bonds are strengthened.
