My girlfriend and I stayed at Jon’s campsite and it was honestly one of the best camping experiences. We were the only ones there since we got there on a Sunday night and left Wednesday morning, so it was very quiet.
He was very welcoming and extremely helpful. We chose the option to have a tent set up for us (for a small fee) before we got there since we arrived after dark, I thought this option was amazing to have. He provides you with 5 gallons of fresh drinking water and it was MORE than enough for three days. We needed wood and he provided us with wood and brought it right to our site. $7 for enough wood that provided us three campfires, amazing. There’s a trail that takes you to a neighboring winery, we didn’t use it but the option was cool to have. There’s also an outhouse for you to use if you’d prefer.
This is a great place for beginner campers to stay because of all the “amenities” offered, it makes it less daunting. But also for seasoned campers if you feel like “glamping” a bit and having things already provided/set up for you haha. Or not! You don’t need all the fancy options!

My wife Becky and I loved everything about our 2nd stay at Wine Trail Wilderness. We learned Bocce ball at Jon's perfectly constructed court. Us and our dogs enjoyed the freedom of the wide open spaces and scenery. Jon's attention to detail is on point. He set us up with plenty of wood for our campfire, and the camp shower option saved us time and money versus going to a travel center for one. He provided us with drinking water and other amenities like chairs and table, a picnic table and outdoor cooking equipment. The outhouse is a good as they get. We had the electric hookup site for our travel trailer. We look forward to returning.

This was my 5th stay with Jon and Carla at Wine Trail Wilderness and again it was an excellent experience. I can't say enough great things about this Hipcamp. The whole vibe there is beyond compare, the hosts, the privacy, immaculate conditions and the location. If you're looking to stay in southern Illinois near the Shawnee National Forest you won't regret staying here. There is a reason this is the #1 rated Hipcamp in Illinois and my repeated visits here are a reflection on that. Couldn't be happier and already looking forward to my next visit!!!

Wide open spaces, but surrounded by trees. Very easy to maneuver a vehicle w/camper trailer, find a spot, and set up. Nice and quiet, near a not-at-all-busy road.
Jon is super-helpful and communicative, and is quick to bring water, ice, wine, anything within reason.

Beautiful property! Definitely off the beaten path in a section of country rarely seen. Unique site with decorative sitting/picnic area to gather around a fire; covered by a canopy made from recycled silo topper. A compost outhouse to use if you wish and surrounded by wineries!
Jon offers the best tasting well water to quench your thirst from an on property well. If you like secluded and beautiful, you’ll love this property’s charm!

We visited in August in a Van, Our 3 day visit was vary peaceful and relaxing.

Great HipCamp! Great location! Superb hosts!
We arrived quite late, 11pm. Jon said no problem he would still be up to meet us. We opted to have the 9 person tent set up for us so we could just set up our cots and get to sleep. New big clean roomy tent for 2 people with big windows. We brought rechargeable fans with us as it was a 95 degree weekend. Enjoyed a day kayaking right down the road at Cedar Lake and was extremely grateful for the ice cold hose shower at Jon and Carla’s garage. Would be nice if there was a privacy screen but at the end of a very hot sweaty day the need for a cold shower before bed far outweighed any modesty.
The next day Jon and his pups made sure our 5 gal cooler of water was full, and chatted awhile giving us more information on things to see and do. We biked the Tunnel Hill Trail starting in Vienna. Mostly under a canopy. Another hot sweaty day but Jon had a portable hot shower machine and tent set up for us at our campsite. That thing is the bomb!!! Thank you Jon!!! Next day off hiking The Little Grand Canyon, again right down the road. And because we were not done hiking we drove over to Giant City State Park about 30 minutes away. Storms moved in across the area. Jon was so attentive to us that he closed all the windows and made sure our campsite was secure while we were out. Amazing!!!

I really enjoyed staying at Jon's camp. The territory is huge, you can barely notice that there are others camping nearby, there is everything you may need for you comfort including shower. Jon was super nice to us, taught us how to play bocce (it was fun!). We spent a great weekend far from the city hassle.
P.S. If you love birds, the place is definitely worth a visit as it features a mix of forest and woodland with open patches of grassland, making the list of species quite impressive. Found yellow-breasted chats, blue grosbeaks, three species of vireos, many warblers, and many more around. And Mississippi kites are just numerous there (see photos)!
Easy to find, host is great and site is spacious and nice!
Jon was absolutely wonderful! The campsite was breathtaking, and we had a wonderful view of the stars. Jon even taught us southern folk how to play Bocce ball! Overall wonderful experience and campsite! :)

Jon was such a helpful host and the site was gorgeous. Our dogs and kids loved it too. The grill was awesome to be able to use. Jon said he has the best water we'd ever taste and he was right! Our youngest insisted on filling her water bottle only from the provided water container. We definitely would stay again if in the area.

Jon was a wonderful host and checked in everyday to ensure we were taken care of! The sites were spaced out fairly nicely to allow for privacy and were well maintained. I would absolutely recommend staying here and would do so again in the future!
Get time camping at Jon's. Everything was taken care of and he checked in to make sure everything was going well. He's truly thought of everything.
We loved staying at Jon's! It's peaceful, quiet, and beautiful. Jon is a wonderful host, showing us our site. We ordered wood in advance, and Jon had it waiting for us. He checks in, and he has local recommendations. We would absolutely stay again!

What a wonderful camping stay! Jon and Carol were so friendly and accommodating! We loved our time at their Hipcamp and will be back!
We stayed at WTW with our two dogs in our campervan. Jon and his wife were so so kind and accommodating. Made sure we had a secluded space and they were just a text away if we needed anything. The land is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. We loved our time here and can’t wait to come back.

My husband and I loved our stay at Wine Trail Wilderness! Jon was so thoughtful during our stay (he replaced the makeshift stakes we made out of sticks with actual stakes when we were out exploring the trails nearby) and accommodating when our initial ETA changed a few times. The tent campsites were thoughtfully spaced out to provide plenty of privacy and it was a beautiful spot with lots of outdoor activities nearby. We did not have any cell reception at the campsite which we loved as it was a great opportunity to unplug and just appreciate our surroundings. I would recommend staying here to any of my friends/family that enjoy camping as this was a favorite stay of ours.

Wonderful accommodations and great host! Jon was so friendly and helpful. The property was nice, clean, and well-kept. I love that the camp was environment-friendly. The bocce court was great and the kids loved playing on it. I would definitely recommend and would come back if our travels take us back to the area!

Very friendly host! The layout was great! I recommend scheduling early and reserving the gazebo bocce court site. Very discreet and pretty location not to mention the wineries. Good job, Jon and Carla.
Jon was an amazing host, fun to chat with, and provided water included with the site.
Site had a fire pit with grill and a bin for wood/trash. The firewood plus kindling for sale was a great value.
