Decourcy Meadows
Decourcy Meadows had everything we needed to enjoy fully-hooked-up trailer camping. The site was level and quiet, with a park-like forest on two sides. We could walk our two dogs directly from the camp on a trail system that led all the way to the beach. Joyce, one of our hosts, gave us key information about the area and encouraged us to ask questions. She even brought us some fresh-picked cherry tomatoes!

Quiet and close
What a nice quiet spot. We have a full size truck camper and it was easy to park and fit well. Perfectly level with all hookups and a bonus gas fire ring. I would recommend completely.

Decourcy Meadows
Beautiful spot in a fantastic location if you enjoy PNW forests, friendly Canadians, ocean and island views, walks, hikes, paddling, and swimming. Saw mountain bikers out and about as well, but we don’t mtb. Rod and Joyce have a gorgeous place— and they’ve made the RV pad just perfect: it’s level, has water sewer and electric, a little lattice fence with sweet mounted mason jar lights at night. They provide a nice outdoor table and chairs and even propane and a propane-burning fire pit during no-burn season. Their list of things to do / explore / and eat was just great. It was a lovely stay, and it was a big bonus for us that they and their neighbors are dog-lovers because we arrived with two. Thank you for hosting us!

Close to the Crow & Gate!
This was our first HipCamp stay and we will definitely be back. This was a perfect base for us to explore the area for six days. We were away hiking every day, and this spot was nice to return to at day’s end. The site worked great for our teardrop trailer and it was a rare luxury for us to have power, water and a sewer connection to deal with our grey water and portable toilet. The photos as provided by previous reviewers were accurate (we did move the table and fire pit around to snuggle up to our tiny trailer). Rod (super nice & friendly) supplied a fire bowl and propane for us during the fire ban. The site was very quiet; you could hear the occasional dog bark, and infrequently a hum which we assumed was the ferry, but otherwise you could hear a pin drop at night. Very dark and good for star gazing. Good afternoon/early evening sun which was nice as we prepped dinners. We didn’t meet Rod until our last morning, as he was away during our stay. This was the only hiccup for us, as we didn’t find out there would be no host on site until we were on the ferry on our way there. Part of the reason we like the HipCamp concept is that as female travelers, there is a bit more of a sense of security with hosts on site. Given the remote location of the property, and the fact that neither of us got cell reception there, we agreed that a solo female might not feel comfortable staying with no host there. We will be back - and will just make sure it’s when Rod and Joyce are home.

Beautiful location!
Rod's place was a truly wonderful spot to stay! Surrounded by forest with a quick walk to the beach it has everything - including full RV hook-up.
Rod was friendly and informative.
We kayaked off the Cedar boat launch and took a short hike at a nearby provincial park. Wish we could have stayed longer.

A perfect day!
Rod and his wife Joyce are some of the sweetest people we’ve met. They’re warm and inviting and had tons of great recommendations for things to do in the area - all printed out as well. Rod walked us around the backyard trails he takes with his sweet dog jerry and told us about the area. You can also walk to one of many beautiful nearby beaches from the property (only a 10-minute walk).
The camp spot is spacious and private. Our van was easy to maneuver into place but Rod has had guests with 40ft RVs back in with ease. Water, electrical, and dump are available on site. Such a huge plus! The RV parked next to our designated spot is not being used.
There’s a patio table with four chairs where we sat and enjoyed dinner outside and played Catan. Around the property, there's a beautiful little garden with a nearby table and bench where we enjoyed our morning smoothie, a huge backyard that our dog loved for a game of frisbee, and tons of great trees - ideal for setting up our hammock. A fire pit and firewood are provided though campfires are limited based on fire restrictions. If no fires are allowed, Rod has a propane fire pit available as well.
We had such a great time chatting with Rod throughout the day and around the campfire. We can’t wait to come back again someday! Plus, this property is in a perfect location for visiting Nanaimo or any of the nearby islands.

Overall an excellent stay. Rod, his partner, and Gerry (their little dog) were most welcoming. Good directions (though Google Maps directions were good). Nice site with 30 amp service, water, and sewer (I think, we don't use as we have a cassette toiler) that was level and gravel. Very quite and rural.
Pros:
Good site with free wood (though rained too much for us to use).
Very quiet and rural.
Free WiFi (though sometimes a bit weak, though not Rod's fault).
No problems getting in or set up (though using a 19' Sprinter 4x4 Class B, but I would guess no problem for anything other than a big rig, though I've never used a big rig or trailer).
Very helpful host, gave us printed guide for things to do.
Very good pub within walking distance (for us, i.e., 5 km).
Very dog friendly.
Possible cons for some:
Very quiet and rural, to get into Ladysmith you will need a vehicle or at least an ebike.
Same for access to walking/running trails.
Would be nice to have access to a toilet.

Rod was a fabulous host. His property is beautiful and quiet. An ideal place to try our first RV experience. We saw deer in the yard and could hear the frogs at night. Location was close to some great walks and the beach is not a far walk. There are a couple british style pubs within a few minutes drive.
We would absolutely stay here again.

Another great stay at Decourcy Meadows! I came back for a second stay and I might return for a 3rd and 4th. Great trails, quiet, private and safe. The hosts are great, respectful and helpful. Full hookup and wifi. No complaints from this hipcamper.

BEAUTIFUL yard. Was able to spend 9 nights at Rod's hipcamp. Took daily nature walks in the backyard. The hosts made me feel so welcomed from day 1. High and dry levelled area. I couldn't ask for more. Worth more than 25$/night. The privacy and quiet neighborhood is worth much more. I would love to return, and I just might.

Delightful gem in the forest
What a delightful gem of a property! Rod was a lovely welcoming host. We only stayed one night but thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful stay, the easy RV hookup, the beautiful fresh forest all around! Definitely recommend. Would have enjoyed exploring the trails if we had more time.

Private, quiet and great location
We really enjoyed our stay at DeCourcy Meadows. It’s a private, quiet, and forested spot with quick access to the ocean for a dip (5 minutes by bike). It’s also close to groceries, cafes and pubs. Rod was a great host and recommended a perfect local swimming hole that our kids absolutely loved and we returned to two days in a row. We were also only 20 minutes from the Nanaimo harbour and restaurants and 15 minutes to the ferry. It was a great way to spend our last couple of days on the island! Thank you, Rod!

Lovely stay at private site
My husband, 2 pups and I had lovely stay at DeCourcy Meadows. Rod was an excellent host who went above and beyond to ensure we were happy with the site. The site was clean, level and very private backing onto and beside forested areas. We would happily stay again.

Pretty, restful full service site
Rod has created a beautiful full service oasis for RVs. It is located in a beautiful area in Nanaimo with big cedars nearby and a people beach half a mile away. It is a private clean site that is close to the Crow and Gate pub that is also an iconic place to dine. Thanks for your hospitality Rod. I wholeheartedly recommend Rod’s Decourcy Meadows.
