Adjacent to the Petrified Forest National Park and overlooking the Painted Desert’s Lithodendron Wash, the Hopi Camper Cabin at the Campfire Ranch is located on an old ostrich ranch and a perfect base camp for your outdoor adventure. The 40 acre ranch is located on a dirt road off I-40 and just an exit away from the north entrance to Petrified Forest National Park. It is one of the closest lodging options to the park.

Ridgeline Campsite, known as Site B at the Campfire Ranch is our most private site. Once you park your car, there is about a 500 foot hike to this site which sits at the foot of a rocky ridge overlooking the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park. This is NOT a site in a campground. It is rugged desert terrain with a picnic table a fire-ring. Campers do have access to a porta-potty (bring your own TP) and pit latrine as well as a covered picnic shelter with a charcoal grill. This is an amazing site for stargazing and looking at the natural wonders of the desert. This is one of the closest lodging options to the National Park.

Scrub Brush Campsite

Scrub Brush Campsite, known as Site A at the Campfire Ranch is our most private site. Once you park your car, there is about a 100 foot hike to this site which sits in the scrub brush overlooking the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park. This is NOT a site in a campground. It is rugged desert terrain with a picnic table a fire-ring. Campers do have access to a porta-potty (bring your own TP) and pit latrine as well as a covered picnic shelter with a charcoal grill. This is an amazing site for stargazing and looking at the natural wonders of the desert. This is one of the closest lodging options to the National Park. Cell service is good for most providers.

Ute Cabin

Adjacent to the Petrified Forest National Park and overlooking the Painted Desert’s Lithodendron Wash, guests are renting the Ute Cabin, at the Campfire Ranch. The 40 acre ranch is located on a dirt road off I-40 and just an exit away from the north entrance to Petrified Forest National Park. It is one of the closest lodging options to the park. You will have access to your cabin, an outhouse, and historic corral converted into a picnic shelter. The space The Ute Cabin is a 200 sqft Camper Cabin featuring a solar lighting system and radio, two bunk beds, and dining table inside. Outside you will find a pit toilet, porta-potty, picnic area with campfire-ring and grill. This is a rustic camper cabin for the outdoor enthusiast. Note that these are self-cleaning cabins and no cleaning fee is charged. Guests must clean up after their stay. There are no blankets, linens, toilet paper, running water, etc provided. You should bring what you need to stay. The view of the painted desert combined with the stars you will hopefully see at night beats any hotel or resort around. It doesn't get much closer to the National Park and the Painted Desert. Guest access Guests will have access to the Ute Cabin, picnic shelter, latrine and areas to roam. There may be other guests at the property during your stay. Other things to note Note that this is a self-cleaning cabins and no cleaning fee is charged. Guests are expected to clean up after their stay. There are no linens, toilet paper, running water, etc provided. You should bring what you need to stay. Please ensure you take everything, including trash with you. We reserve the right to charge $100 if you do not follow the cleaning instructions prior to check out. Thank you for understanding! The road is dirt and has some ruts in it. Most of the time the road is fine for most cars. During the rainy season, you may want to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Check the weather before you arrive.

Ridgeline Campsite
My sister and I absolutely loved this camp site. You felt like you were in the middle of no where right in the national park. Star gazing was perfect and the view was beautiful. It rained that day and we probably would not have made it without all wheel drive. I can’t imagine how bad the road gets with lots of rain so be aware of the weather. Thank you for sharing your land with us.

The spot was perfect for what it was. It was camping with walls and beds! We thoroughly enjoyed the fire pit and the relaxing, pretty setting. We all got a good night sleep. We will definitely stay there again if we head up that way.

Breathtaking views of the stars and the milky way from here. In the morning you get beautiful views of the painted desert and mesas from here as well. Very easy to find and roads not bad at all maybe a bit diffucult if you are in a sedan or similar vehichle. Be mindful you are roughing it theres a porta potty and a table but thats it! We enjoyed our single night stay and if we come back for petrified forest we will likely stay here again!

Cozy alternative to car camping a

Ute Cabin
This little cabin was exactly what we needed: an alternative to car camping near Petrified Forest National Park where we didn't have to set up camp in the dark. The cabin was clean and cozy, and the solar-powered lights were more than adequate for us to get settled in when we arrived after dark. We opened a few of the windows to get a cross-breeze and had a lovely night.

The Hopi cabin was in a semi-secluded area. There were a few other houses and cabins but they seemed unoccupied. The star gazing was spectacular. The cabin was as described. Small but clean. It had a picnic table and a fire pit. Due to a local fire ban we did not use it. The windows with screens in the cabin opened easily to allow for ventilation. The mattress on the bed was comfortable. I would recommend Hopi cabin. Note you need to bring all your own bedding and supplies, including water. Be sure to follow the owner's directions as it is a bit tricky to find. A reasonable trade off for an out of the way retreat. Plan lots of time to ponder the stars.

The desert is filled with amazing treasures, but most people miss all of that as they pass by on I-40. The Campfire Ranch is easy to find, navigable by motorcycle on street tires, and provides an immediate reprieve from the hustle of interstate traffic. Once settled, each plant, stone, and star is magnified by the peaceful solitude of the desert.

Easy to find and well maintained campsites, an accessible site makes it a perfect over stopover. Don’t let the easy access and close proximity to the highway full you, the view of the petrified forest is spectacular and morning sunrise an experience all by itself.

We enjoyed a wonderful night under the stars at this beautiful campsite right off of highway 40. Shawn quickly responded to our question upon arrival and we had everything we needed- a pristine fire pit, picnic table, toilet, and nice place to pitch our tent.

Very cool spot! The road to reach the ranch is a bumpy gravel one. Instructions on how to get there are well written. Highly recommend a visit here
