Camp Saguaro is nestled in a unique and rural area on the west side of Tucson, Arizona. With the Saguaro National Park Visitor Center, Tucson Mountain Park, and Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum all within four miles, there is plenty of opportunity to explore the outdoors. Tucson Mountain Park and Saguaro National Park boast hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and non-motorized mountain bikes are permitted on the trails in Tucson Mountain Park. Let us be your base camp for desert exploration whether it's hiking, riding, birdwatching, and learning. Come to Camp Saguaro and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the desert. Our friendly hosts can help you plan a great day, some of them even have their Certified Tourism Amabssador credentials. Please note: We are tobacco-free, medicinal herbs are legal and ok as long as children are not around. What to expect: We are in a rural neighborhood where most parcels are 1-3 acres, we have seven acres. It's quiet around here but along with the natural sounds of the desert like yipping coyotes, and woodpeckers pecking, you may hear a horse, dog, or chicken. While we are on the outskirts of Tucson, we are not completely remote. We have carved our sites out of the natural layout of the desert. There are many kinds of cactus in our area in addition to the magnificent Saguaro, and uneven areas when walking. We keep it as natural as possible. We have a small "Mercantile" on property. This is our office, but we also have items you may have forgotten, and souvenirs made by local artists. Also available is firewood, and ice is for sale for your convenience. We have a small Laundry Shack (two washers, two dryers) 2.00 wash/2.00 dry. You'll need cash for these things, we do not take any other form of payment at this time. Camp Saguaro is tobacco-free. This spacious campsite is tucked away into a quiet corner of this stunning piece of Sonoran Desert. Located off the beaten path but close enough for a short walk to the common area. You are welcome to have a small, attended fire, so be sure to pack those marshmallows. The common area has modern amenities such as flushing toilets and heated water on-demand showers, making it easy to relax and enjoy the best of desert life. The Mercantile on property carries various camping supplies, local art and doubles as our office. Right next to the Mercantile is our Laundry Shack, with on where you can do your laundry and deposit your cash in the honor box. Whether you’re looking for a place to stay for a night or two, or planning a longer stay, this campsite offers a unique and unforgettable experience.

Magical Mushroom

Magical Mushroom is a pull-through site with a really cool structure on it. Just look at the pictures! The mushroom is very small, it fits a queen air mattress inside, or up top (up top is slanted a bit for drainage). Be sure to have a way to inflate your mattress after you put it in the Mushroom. It won't fit through the door. You could also pitch your tent or park your van outside and use the "mushroom" as a place to play, pray, relax, or to get out of the elements. It's up to you. This is a cobb structure that has been fortified on the outside to protect it from erosion. The inside is still as originally built (25 years ago), and is basically mud (even the floor), so please be gentle with it. If you have children, please make sure they aren't locking each other out and playing rough with it. Most everything is decorative and is not made to stand up to rough housing. This site is just about 20 steps from flushing toilets and showers. It has a small outdoor oven. Perfect for roasting marshmallows or hot dogs. The site is approximately 45x25, so there is plenty of room for your tents, car, van, truck camper or really tiny teardrop, anything larger would be difficult to maneuver. The adjacent parking area is about 25'x10', so, if you are camping in a van, you can't get into the site, but you can back into the parking spot and your sliding door would open up to the path to Magical Mushroom. Magical Mushroom is right next door to "Adobe", so, if you are traveling with friends or family you may want to book both.

Javelina Hollow is in a great location. You will be camping among some magnificent saguaros which are unique to this area. This is one of our more secluded spots, but it is still just steps away from the common area with showers and flushing toilets. This spot is suitable for van campers, tiny teardrops, tents, overlanders, car camping. Dimensions are approximately 28x18 for the parking area, this does not include your sitting area.

Curious Quail is a large site. There is plenty of sun if you have solar, but there is also some shade in the sitting area. It's off on its own but, is still convenient to the common area with the bathrooms and picnic area. In this site we allow up to two camping vehicles (two vans would fit just fine). If you are traveling with a friend or family you are able to add-on the second vehicle for this site. This site is approximately 50'x17' at it's narrowest and 27' wide at it's widest. This does not include the site's lovely sitting area.

Silly Lizard is set apart from the common area and our other sites. It is a true desert experience with its little solitary Saguaro, standing dead tree, "fluffy" cholla (don't touch them), and several barrel cacti (barrels of fun!). The site is approximately 28'x15', this is the parking area and does not include sitting or tent area. This is one of our better sites for backing in a trailer.

Yippy Coyote is a small site with the entrance guarded by a beautiful Saguaro. It is a nice spot for van camping, overlanders, tents and the like. We do NOT allow class C, trailers, busses or motorhomes. This site has great sun exposure for those with solar panels. Your vehicle will provide you with afternoon shade. This site is about 25 steps from the common area with flushing toilets and showers are located.

Adobe is a unique desert experience. You will need to bring your camping gear; you'll need everything but the tent to camp inside this straw bale structure. If you need more space, you are also allowed to pitch a tent in your site, there is a 16'x11' area behind Adobe where a tent would fit nicely. It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy nature, and the perfect shelter for those who do not feel like pitching a tent. Adobe offers a rustic and cozy atmosphere, while still camping. The thick walls provide excellent insulation to keep you warm in the winter, but you'll still want to bring plenty of warm blankets for the coldest nights. The sturdy full size wood bed is ready for your air mattress or sleeping mat and sleeping bags, or whatever bedding you bring along. The solar lights inside will help augment your battery or solar operated lantern, but should not be counted on as a sole light source. The built-in table outside makes it easy to prepare meals and snacks, with plenty of room for your cooler and propane camp stove/grill. Whether you're looking for a secluded getaway or just a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Adobe is the perfect spot for you. From the front door of Adobe, it is approximately 30 steps to the bathroom area. Adobe's tent area is just about 15 steps away. Adobe is situated right next to the Magical Mushroom site, so, if you are travelling with friends or family and need two sites, these would go well together. Adobe is a straw bale/mud structure, so, pets are not allowed inside, however, if you are using the tent site at Adobe as well, pets are allowed in your tent and outside of Adobe.

Would 100% recommend again. My husband and I stayed here for one night and it was such a relaxing and wonderful stay. The camp host was very friendly and informative. It was only a 7 min drive from Saguaro National Park visitor center. Hopefully I get to stay here again! The bathrooms and shower are very clean, and the shower was super-hot, and we were both able to take a much-needed shower! Adobe was very clean and smelled really nicely like Sage. We were able to cook with our camp supplies and our air mattress fit perfectly on the bed. I slept really well and was very warm in the Adobe. You can purchase supplies needed, do laundry, and do your dishes with hot water. Definitely worth the money especially if you are on a long road trip worth the stay!

Nice, large campground vibe. Kind of in a neighborhood, so less wild than I expected, but a good place for a night. Bathrooms were clean and laundry was easy and inexpensive.

Really enjoyed the space and warmth it kept during the cooler nights. Same goes for the mushroom house which we also stayed in a different day. The drive to it was awesome as well

What a wonderful campground! It was extremely clean. Absolutely beautiful location and so conveniently located near the national park! Communication was excellent. The hosts were so friendly and kind and hospitable. Our children had a wonderful time playing and doing a scavenger hunt! The bathrooms were very well-maintained as was the laundry room. We will definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone!

Camping with Saguaros for the Win

We were only there for a night, but we really enjoyed sleeping next to the Saguaro and other cactus. The birds all over the cacti in the morning were also a real treat. The campsite was spacious and set up nicely. The showers and restrooms were set up nicely, as was the shared entertainment area. Communication before our visit was also very helpful.

My camp spot, Silly Lizard, was very private and quiet. My full size van and 13 ft Scamp trailer fit nicely. I had texted before hand to make sure I would fit (which was answered promptly) and this was one of the sites recommended to me. All the amenities were nice and so were the camp hosts. It was a lovely stopover on the way to my winter camp and I plan to stay again in the spring.

Magical Mushroom
We were SO impressed by this property. The mushroom house felt so magical. The showers were hot & full pressure. We loved walking around & looking at all of the deserts plants & random art all over the property. And every site had its own fire ring. Best part was its less than a 10 minute drive to the Saguaro NP visitor center. 10/10. Will be back!

Javelin Hollow was a beautiful campground with very nice amenities and nice people! Definitely the highlight of our trip to Saguaro NP. Great, clean bathrooms. Nice spaces with beautiful surroundings. Nice folks who helped us get ice and cook when our camp stove ran out of fuel. 7 minutes from the Wasson Peak trailhead and 10 minutes from the visitor center. The stars were the real highlight - 5 shooting stars, space dust and a satellite spotted. We would stay again! Thank you all. ❤️

I really loved my time at Camp Saguaro. The drive there through the Saguaro National Park was stunning. Communication was clear and the directions were really easy to follow. The camp was impeccably maintained: walkways were free from desert stickers, the bathrooms were always clean, the community gathering spaces were fun and inviting, and my dog especially loved the dog park where she could be off leash. This place is a true gem for those of us who like to visit national parks while sleeping under the stars.

Magical Mushroom
I had such an amazing trip. Michelle and Kim are wonderful hosts, great to chat with, as well as talented artists - as are many of their neighbors, you can buy some very lovely local art in their mercantile. I can't recall the name of the other woman I met who was doing property caretaking, but she was equally friendly and pleasant. The campground is gorgeous and full of charm. It's super convenient to the west side of Saguaro National Park (10 minutes to the visitor center), plus convenient to downtown Tucson (about 30 minutes, and a beautiful drive). I stayed in the Magic Mushroom which was super cozy. It was a perfect size for me to stay as an individual and spread out my gear. It would also be great for two people leaving their gear in the car, plus/or you can pitch a tent on the site too. The mushroom was well insulated - it was nice and cool inside during the heat of the day, and warm at night when temps dropped. It was easy to find, and to navigate to my site even though I arrived after dark. The toilets, sinks and showers are really clean and very charming, with ample hot water. The coyotes do love to sing and chatter at night - a huge plus for me, but something to be aware of if you're a lighter sleeper, especially in a tent. I even got to finally see a roadrunner here! I wanted to spend an extra night, but my schedule wouldn't allow for that. I will definitely be back if I return to Tucson in the future.

What a wonderful place to spend the night! Super friendly and helpful at check-in and throughout brief stay. Felt very magical with all the lights. Mercantile store had great crafts, we did some early Christmas shopping. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

This is an oasis of creativity and hospitality. Michelle was joyful and welcoming. You experience nature all around here. Calm and peace abound here. The wailing of the coyotes was a core memory-building first for us. We are so glad we stayed here and believe you also be glad.

Our stay couldn’t have been any better! The directions were very clear getting there, and we were met as we came into the property even though it was dark out. Every single person working on the property was so nice and welcoming. Our site “flying jewels” was perfect for our camper van, it was very spacious, and seeing the hummingbirds fly around is a cherry on top. All of the common spaces were extremely clean and well kept. If we find ourselves in the area in the future, we will absolutely be staying here again.

We were on a road trip for 2 weeks across southern AZ and NM and Camp Saguaro was easily our favorite campground on the whole trip. Facilities were clean, organized, and stylish. We loved showers, bathrooms, and sink access as it makes our stay more pleasant. Staff were friendly and helpful. 11/10, would definitely go back again!!!

We loved car camping here! Every camp site was spacious and the grounds and group area were very well maintained. The toilets and hot showers were an added bonus after a day of hiking in the park. Surrounded by beauty and the perfect spot to stay outside of the national park. Highly recommend!

The whole camp is so inviting. All done by Michelle and Kim. From reusing parts of the commune and finding unusual items to use as decor. Didn’t use the hot shower, but the bathrooms and sinks were adorable and loved the hydrant in the dog park. Hosts were so friendly and gave me a history of the place. Had a fire in the pig and a great night of sleep car camping. I will be back.

I was a last minute camper looking for a spot near the Saguaro National Park and was welcomed to Michele's campground. Straight forward directions led me to the grounds and my site at Javelina Hollow. I had plenty of room to pitch my tent by the big saguaros in the sunset and found the grounds subtly lit with colored solar lamps. I had a nice peaceful evening under the stars. Coyotes howled and owls hooted. In the lovely morning I was woken by a dawn chorus of quail and other birds, made my coffee and walked the premises discovering all of the super cool, creative art features that helped separate campsites and are placed about. The two flush toilets and two showers with running warm water, wow, what a treat! I loved the little Mercantile and super special, funky (but well designed) adobe and other structures on site. What an absolute treat!

Michele’s set up is absolutely perfect. And this comes from myself who owns a small Four Wheel Camper and basically never stay in campgrounds and just love to Boondock and get away from everybody. But Michele’s property is just a great way relax and to see Saguaro National Park and the Desert Museum, which are very close to her property. Everybody we met at the camp, and of course that includes Michele, were friendly and happy because it’s just a great scene. The showers are really nice. The bathrooms are always clean and the laundry facilities are really nice to have. I just can’t say enough about how nice it is to stay at Camp Saguaro. Highly recommend it.
