Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.

Cinco de Mayo Event (May 3rd-5th, 2024) Our ranch was originally part of the enchanted Rock property owned by Mr Moss. It is currently a 6th generation ranch. Original ranch was 1767 acres. The highest elevation is 1600'. You can locate us on Google Earth by searching for Dooley Wahl Rd Llano, Texas. We have secluded camping available. Primitive tent camping, or if you want to go glamping you can bring an RV with a generator and be even more secluded but still have the comfortable amenities of an RV. IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN RV...no worries! Contact outdoorsy.com. you can rent an RV. They will deliver it, set it up and pick it up. Remember to ask for a generator. You don't have to bring wood. We got yuh covered! There is a porta potty at the dig site. We are currently working on getting an outside bathroom and shower area. Firepit musicians welcome! Bring your instruments! Maggi’s, Ranch is stunning, filled full of beautiful animals. And the stars at night were simply amazing. The hosts did everything to make her stay comfortable, from guiding us into our spot. Setting us up with a campfire and letting us know about activities. Would definitely recommend!

James's wild bill’s cabin was real cozy. The star gazing was great and so was watching some of the wildlife grazing around the property. Speaking of grazing their pizzas are delicious overall it was a great experience would definitely recommend staying overnight!

Very impressed with this campground. Went on the guided bird walk and learned so much about bird calls, how and where to spot them, and some interesting facts. The hosts are kind beyond words, highly communicative, and knowledgeable of their landscape. Their pup will come by to say hello and sometimes sleep by your campsite! If you want to stay up late to stargaze, listen to the river run, and have a great time then this is the hipcamp for you.

It was a beautiful place and lots of deer. The owners are really sweet too which was really welcoming to have. We did tent camping right in the center near the bathroom which was perfect. The bathrooms are very well kept and clean. My boyfriend and I have already decided to go back for another stay.

We loved our night here. We went swimming in the river, it was the perfect temperature. Bjorn the dog hung out with us all night and got along great with our dog, he was fantastic we were so sad leaving him in the morning. Nice and shady area, felt very private!

Was a great location right off the highway and very quiet. It is a campground and event location with a nice amount of wildlife within the fenced area. We didn't have much time since we were passing through but would love to return and spend some time here. Our spot was in the front but still was very quiet and couldn't hear the highway. Only possible negative would be that the front pull through sites were right next to each other and would have been on top of others if the row had been full. But the site was good and the hookups were very easy.

We loved our campsite at Low Gear Farmstead, it was very easy to find given the instruction and we were very pleased when we rolled up and saw our campsite! It’s spacious and right next to a river / stream that we spent most of our weekend swimming and tubing in. The host sold generous amounts of affordable firewood and yes we did go see the goats, it was very worth it. The best part was our surprise guest, Bjorn the dog who was very friendly and kept us company throughout our stay, and was a joy to have along with us. The worst part was leaving and seeing him chase behind after us 🥺 Highly recommend camping here, we got to do everything we wanted to and more! Logan the host is very responsive and attentive too, and fun to talk with. I want to go back already!

It’s a great location. I had a great time. It’s very peaceful. The stream is an added bonus to cool off. Logan and Gear were very helpful. Got to see wildlife and take a tour of their goats. Bjorn was a bonus. This was their dog. I enjoyed his company but they offered to keep him in their home. This was my first solo trip so it was nice to have Bjorn’s company. He kept critters away from the campsite. He accompanied me to the stream, for a short walk and just hung out at the campsite. I had rain one night and Bjorn stayed close by. This is my second trip there and I always feel safe. Will definitely be back.
