Just outside the quaint town of Austin sits a vivid reminder of one of Pennsylvania's worst disasters – the Austin Flood. In 1909, the dam was constructed on Freeman Run to power the Bayless Papermill downstream. Many wondered if the dam was safe. On September 30, 1911, Austin found out. Poor construction, coupled with torrential rain, resulted in the dam's collapse. Nearly 400 million gallons of water were released, destroying everything for 8 miles. At least 78 people perished in the tragedy. It was the second worst flood disaster in Pennsylvania's history and sixth worst dam failure in U.S. history. The tragedy sparked new legislation to improve dam safety, and the Austin Dam was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The ruins of the dam still stand, surrounded by a 76-acre park, as a tribute to the lives lost in the Austin Flood. Don't miss one of Potter County's best kept secrets!

We loved setting up our truck camper on Scotts property. All of the set ups were there and he gave clear instructions on how to access everything. Down a gravel town road there is a gate to the property, then down a dirt road and you are in secluded heaven. We were there for 8 nights and didn't see 1 person. All we heard were owls at night and an occasional dog barking in the far, far distance. We loved the solitude which we really wanted and needed. There were some trails marked around the property and some ATV/logging roads? But whichever route we chose, it took us through private woods. My dog absolutely loved it! She was so happy to have us living her life for a little bit....napping outside on the grass whenever we felt like it, playing games and just being in the moment. We drove up to Wellsville, NY a couple of times and they had everything we needed, it was a beautiful drive. You can get firewood at several spots along this route and in Wellsville itself, along with groceries and alcohol. There is an Amish farm that sells baked goods on Fridays and Saturdays on the left as you approach Wellsville, definitely try their goods, especially the little turnovers. We will definitely be back to Scotts place, we loved it!

As much as I love our state parks here in Pennsylvania, I've got to say, Austin Dam was glorious. Our site (1) was within VAGUE eyesight of our single neighbor's at site 2 (as in, their campfire was a distant dot between the trees) with no one else around whatsoever. There was so much space that you get to "choose your setup" with more than one fire ring, cooking setup, several picnic tables, benches, and a beautiful little creek running right behind the site. Drinking water, firewood, ice, Wi-Fi, charging was available at the visitor center even after closing for the night (self-service), but keep in mind it's a good 5-7 minute drive down a dirt road to get there from site 1. We arrived after dark, and while the setup was a bit confusing, the instructions sent from the host Alvy were top notch and we got setup and settled in good time. We paid to have firewood delivered to our site in advance, and it was more than we could burn in a night, stacked neatly with a tarp covering it waiting for us.
The next morning we went back to the visitor center to get some information and meet Alvy (he was SO nice and enthusiastic) before we left. So glad we stayed here! We've been gushing to all our camping friends already.
The ONLY, and I mean ONLY bummer is that the toilets are portapotties. They were clean, and I certainly can't expect them to dump a bunch of money into actual plumbed bathrooms, but that's just something to keep in mind. All in all, amazing stay and we WILL be back!

Beautiful spot! We had a wonderful time relaxing, enjoying nature and the views from our 32 ft camper. Easy time setting up and leaving. Our dogs had a blast running around and not having to be on leashes. We went on walks during the day and had campfires at night. The sky was perfect for star gazing. This was such a nice getaway and we will definitely go again! Scott was a great host and always responded quickly when I would have a question. 5 stars!

Scott’s land was exactly what we were looking for. Completely secluded, full hookups, nice spot to park our 24 foot camper. We had more than enough room to fit our two vehicles as well. We were really happy with this camp spot. It is very close to a trailer park and few houses but everyone kept to themselves and we felt comfortable to be there. We wanted a space that we could have to ourselves and our dogs had some space to move. We set our camper to face the woods line on the property. It felt very serene. There is a small creek near the property that we walked to. There isn’t a clear cut path within the property to get down to the water but we were able to make our way through the brush without much effort. Joshua was great to work with. He was very nice and responded quickly to any questions we had.

I stayed in site 1 with my travel trailer. My sight was clean and level, with the creek on the backside, with a pool that my dog and I enjoyed wading in. I have Solar power and did well, shut down 1 night after 2 cloudy days, but was up early in the morning.
The memorial section of the park was clean with a large open area an campsite's.
I was confused coming off the highway, Alvi was there and directed me to the left and pointed out my options to park, and guided me into the spot.
I would definitely recommend a stay at Austin Dam

My friends and I really loved tent camping here! The camp is very big and spacious, and I loved the wood benches and table. The creek was so beautiful, perfect for a cool down as well. I got wood to bundle with the trip and it was such a generous amount! There was so much to explore, very relaxing, perfect shade covering, all in all amazing experience. Highly recommend!
