Bucks County camping guide

Where to go

Nockamixon State Park

Built around Lake Nockamixon, a 1,450-acre reservoir in the Perkiomen headwaters country, Nockamixon State Park is the primary public overnight destination in Bucks County — modern cabins in a wooded setting above the lake, with marina access for boating and fishing and a swimming pool. The reservoir holds warm-water species including bass, muskellunge, and catfish. The trail system connects the campground to the lake's wooded shoreline. Given its proximity to the Philadelphia metro, weekends in summer fill quickly; midweek camping offers a noticeably quieter experience.

When to go

May through October is the camping window in Bucks County. The Delaware Valley position means four real seasons — warm, humid summers in the river valley, excellent fall foliage in October, and winters cold enough to close the campgrounds but not severe. Spring arrives early in the southern part of the county and the Delaware River is at its most dramatic from spring floods through June.

Spring (March–May)

March averages 35% clear days with lows in the upper 20s to low 40s — one of the clearer early springs in the mid-Atlantic. The Delaware Canal towpath is excellent for walking in April when the willows and redbuds emerge along the river. By May, highs reach the upper 60s to upper 70s and Nockamixon opens for the season. Spring bass fishing on the reservoir is good before the summer recreational pressure builds.

Summer (June–August)

July highs average in the low-to-mid 80s, occasionally reaching 90 when heat builds in the river valley. Clear days average 37–49%, with afternoon thunderstorms common. The swimming pool at Nockamixon is the best relief on hot days; the campground and marina are busiest from late June through Labor Day. Reserve summer weekends well in advance.

Fall (September–November)

October is the best month in Bucks County — 63% clear days, highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, and the mixed hardwood forests surrounding Nockamixon in full color. The Delaware Canal country is particularly scenic in fall, and the historic towns along the river are less crowded than in summer. Most campgrounds close in late October or early November.

Winter (December–February)

Winters are cold but generally manageable — January lows average in the upper teens to low 30s, highs in the low-to-mid 40s, 35% clear days. Snow arrives several times a season. While many private campgrounds close for the winter, Nockamixon State Park remains open for day use, and its cabins are available for rent year-round.
