From U.S. Highway 550 (mile marker 112.5), you will see the National Park sign, drive south on County Road 7900 for 5 miles.
After 5 miles (the road comes to a “T”) you will see another National Park sign, on the right hand side. Turn right on County Road 7950. You cannot turn left. (If you go straight, that will take you to Pueblo Pintado).
Drive 3 miles on County Road 7950. The pavement will end. On the right hand side you will see a sign that says "Dry Camp".
THE CAMPGROUND IS ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE. There will be a sign that reads: “Horsethief Campground”. In front of the short road to the Campground.
At the end of the short road to the campground is: a large portable building, and 2 other buildings. We apologize that the road is a little uneven, but we are looking to improve this real soon. You are welcome to park inside or outside the gated area.
Horse-Thief Campground is an upcoming camp; located on 5 acres of land and more, for campers to enjoy. In a quiet; serene, beautiful landscape area of the Dine Nation.
With beautiful sunrises; sunsets and night sky is out of this world. There are trails in which visitors may walk or bike, as well as a Look Out Point. Horse-Thief is currently a Dry Camp with no Electricity or running water however generators are welcome. There is one portable restroom.
P.S. If you have already paid on Hipcamp, you do not need to pay again. However, please sign the Waiver provided. With the war going on across the country and gas prices on the rise; if you we would like to save a little money instead of making a reservation on Hipcamp, you can pay for the fees upon arrival with cash, check or Zelle. We are a dry dispersed campground with plenty of room.

We camped inside the fence. I picked up over 10 pieces of metal including 2 nails and a screw just from sight alone. This was were vehicles can be at. I am glad we did not get a flat tire here. I would have through that with it being a hosted campground that they would maintain it and run a metal detector since they have a problem. I do not want to think of what we ran over that I could not see. There were also nails and other metal pieces outside by the port-a-potty. This is a not the best place for tires, animal paws, or flip flops wearers since it is in the middle of no where and had to find services to fix those problems.

1 night at Bear Paw lake Cabin
Bear Paw Cabin was exactly what I had hoped for and more! It offered peace and solitude, all the comforts of home, plus unexpected treasures (like the bird seed and feeders!). Words cannot describe how amazing the night sky views are from the upper deck. The host was phenomenal with communication and hospitality.
I used the cabin as a last stop before heading to camp in Chaco and it was perfect. Now, I hope to return with my daughter, so we can experience Bear Paw Cabin magic together.

We basically had the place to ourselves. Tent camping with just one pickup/RV trailer about 100 yards away. You could pretty much set up anywhere. Very quiet, beautiful night. Porta potty was clean and well supplied with TP and hand sanitizer.

Dry camp outside the north entrance to Chaco Canyon. The grounds were clean and level. There was a clean porta-potty there also. The campground is located about 16 miles from the park on a bumpy dirt and gravel road. Host stopped by to introduce himself. We were so glad we could stay here and not pull the trailer into the park. There was plenty of room or tents and RVs. Good countryside views from campground and VERY quiet.

Though we didn’t meet our hosts, this spot is perfect for a stay before heading to Chaco Canyon National Historical Park. Excellent directions led us easily to this dry camp. It is barebones with a portapotty and a fire pit, but we were grateful for the night’s rest in that beautiful Mesa setting. Many thanks to Wayne and Yolanda!

Two main things; First is the scenery is great with the cliffs behind. second is it is so quiet, well located a good distance from the secondary road. Renne is a great host and my doggie Molly got to run around and play with the two other resident dogs. The one thing that needs to be improved is covering the rocks with a finer gravel. It’s hard to step over or walk on the courser rock. I did have a fall.

There are some washboard roads to contend with but we had the place to ourselves for the most part, couple more campers pulled in at night. It will be hard to find clearer night skies. Wow! I didn't actually stay at Horse Thief Campground... I lucked out and got a first come space in the park and I grabbed it because I didn't want to do the road out and back to the park. Horse Thief is 13 miles from the park just where the blacktop ends. It isn't the prettiest campground and it is a dry camp, but other than the park, there is nothing for 40 miles. If you can't get a place in the park, it is a basic no frills alternative. Gallo campground in the park is prettier, but not many more amenities than Horse Thief.

Loved that we could see both sunrise and sunset from our spot. We didn’t need to use the porta-potty but it was handy. Dry camp is easy
to access. Less than 1/4 mile on gravel to reach their driveway. Our 2nd best option for proximity to Chaco Canyon as we were too late to reserve in the campground there. Friendly host.

I loved camping on Wayne and Yolanda's land! The secluded desert surroundings were beautiful, clean and we had all the land to ourselves. The spot we chose had a fire ring and made our experience just perfect. The starry night sky was truly an unforgettable experience! The location was easy to get to and just 25 min away to Chaco National Park entrance. Will definitely come again!!!

Chaco Canyon had been on my bucket list for a long time and this was a great location to stay and tent camp when Gallo Campground was full. It was private, clean, flat and no hassle. It was honestly the quietest campground I have ever stayed in. The roads getting in were easy, the property was well maintained and it was 35 minutes from Chaco Canyon. I read some of the other reviews for this spot and frankly the negative ones are inaccurate. If you have a complaint about this campsite you should just get a hotel.
