Weekend Trip to Sugarhill Campgrounds🐞🙏

This was a return visit and even more interesting than the first. I brought my son and his mountain bike. Kevin took him on one of the many trails which he created and keeps nicely groomed. The most special part was being Kevin’s guests at an Apache ceremonial feast. As before the view from the campsite was lovely and private. Will return again!

1 night at Sugarhill Campgrounds🐞🙏

We had a wonderful stay! Kevin was incredibly hospitable. We arrived later than planned, and he still took the time to greet us and chat with us when we got in, which made us feel so welcome right away. We set up camp at night so in the morning we were amazed by the beauty AND the dozen or so elk roaming the property in the morning. On top of that, when our car wouldn’t start the next day, he went above and beyond by turning around on his way to work to come back and help jump it. Truly such a kind and generous person. We’re so grateful for his help and for the wonderful stay. Highly recommend booking here- you’ll be well taken care of.

Kevin greeted us upon our arrival. His mother and a friend wanted to meet the campers as well. The camping space was as advertised and we had no issues. Perfect place to spend the night. We learned a lot about life on the reservation which was great insight. Meeting people is one of our favorite things to do while traveling. I think we have a new freind. FYI I usually don’t leave reviews unless something special occurs.

We really enjoyed the remote location and didn’t see another person the whole time (a plus for me). Beautiful scenery and quiet campsite. Couldn’t ask for more.

The location was tidy and in a beautiful place. Nice and secluded but not too far from some really good hiking trails. 10/10 would recommend

14 nights at Camp Rio

The bathrooms were warm, clean and had consistent hot water! Water and power hook-up worked, as advertised. I used the pavilion to work out and it was clean (no hot water to wash dishes). I wouldn't say that my spot was "romantic" but the grounds were beautifully well-kept and the stream featured in all the photos online was as magical as people say. Firewood and a fire ring is $25 extra. The food truck that was open on Fridays had the best elote I have every tasted. The staff we met were all very nice, friendly and personable, with the exception of one male staff who took a rude tone with me about my 12 year old dog being off leash for less than five minutes. I welcome all reminders about the rules, I do not welcome rudeness. So keep your dog on a leash unless you want him to yell at you. Lauri was especially attentive (remembered my name) and wonderful to talk to! Make sure to throw your garbage away at the end of the night and supervise your food, as there was a stray dog that visited often, day and night. My wifi didn't work well in this mountainous valley (Starlink) but I was able to connect to the camp's wifi and was able to work my full schedule. What a god send. No phone service, so be prepared. A little slice of heaven with Elk, wonderful stars and lovely people. I would recommend this place and I would visit it again!

Weekend Trip to Sugarhill Campgrounds🐞🙏

Kevin’s site in Mescalero NM was really special. There was a little more ambient noise than I expected, wafting up from the village and roads. But the noise died down and the skies were starry (no light pollution). The campsite was level with a good view and a decent firepit (BYO wood). It was easy to make a day trip into Cloudcroft for lunch and rock hounding, followed by an afternoon of hiking. I would agree with other campers that the thing that stood out was the generosity of Kevin and his wife Shawn (not sure of the spelling). I was solo camping and they invited me and my dog into their home for morning coffee. They had lots of suggestions and also gave me a glimpse into Apache life. Strongly recommend!
