Each tree is beautiful in its own way, but perhaps no trunk is better for squeezing than those in the 200-year old white pine grove in the Whittemore Recreation Area of the Peoples Forest. One can only hug so many trees, however, so it’s a good thing there are lots of other things to do in the American Legion and Peoples State Forests. With the original home built in 1785, Milk Thistle farm is on the historic register and is comprised of the main house and 5 acres of land. It is run as a small non-profit animal sanctuary and is home to rescued chickens, goats, and pigs, as well as two humans and their dog and cat companions. The main property is fenced in, with a large back field great for tent camping, and an orchard to explore that can also double as hammock camping. There is parking for cars and bikes. We try to minimize our impact on the environment as much as possible, and encourage our guests to compost, recycle, and dispose of waste accordingly. Please note we have dogs, including a Livestock Guardian Dog that does bark to alert us of new people and warn off would be predators. Tree huggers unite! This is the promised land. Consisting of two separate forests, the wooded bastions of Mother Nature rise tall and strong in these parts. Each tree is beautiful in its own way, but perhaps no trunk is better for squeezing than those in the 200-year old white pine grove in the Whittemore Recreation Area of the Peoples Forest. One can only hug so many trees, however, so it’s a good thing there are lots of other things to do in the American Legion and Peoples State Forests. The trails that wind through these wooded acres will keep hikers on their feet for days on end. And the waters of the wild and scenic West Branch of the Farmington River attracts kayakers and fishers from all over Connecticut and even neighboring states. KSJoy’s property was as described and a nice spot to hang out for a couple of days before the busy holiday season kicks in. Full electric hookup. No water this time of year (was just shut off last week). Nice area. Drove around. Followed the host’s recommendations for local food. Great advice! Had our four dogs with us. The property is close to a fairly busy road so having good recall (or we brought a fencing system) is essential. The road noise Fri-Sun in mid Nov. was not an issue. The host was very communicative and answered all questions but was hands off which we liked. Highly recommend.

We overnighted here for my sons birthday fishing trip. 3x 13 year olds and dad. Jocelyn was an amazing host. Super friendly and approachable. The barn is a great place for cold nights and rain. It’s a great way to plan a camping trip without worrying about rain or weather. If you are into trout/small mouth fishing the Natchaug is right across the street and there are many many walks all around. Great location will definitely be back again!

Justin and Amy are very friendly and responsive to any questions. They give very detailed instructions before arrival. The campsite is peaceful and comes with so many amenities, packing was so easy. Getting an add on of a cooler full of ice was so great, the ice lasted the whole time we were there!

Perfect if you live around hartford and want a quick getaway spot. Very acominating. Private but not far from food, beaches, and shopping. We got there when it was dark out so it was helpful that all we needed to do was set up the tent, they had everything else you could need there.

Weekend Trip to Hammock Hallows
My bestie & I had a wonderful overnight at Hammock Hallows. Camp is on private property, has own driveway, parking & paths w signs to 4 Sites: Hammock Hallows, Fern Gully, Mossy Glen and Woodland’s Edge. Bring a rolling cart. Woodland’s Edge is a half cabin half tent & easily walkable from parking, very spacious. Mossy Glen set far back on the property. Fern Gully adorable little a-frame cabin w a bed, floor cushions & windows, w hobbit door! Has bbq, bar seats for 2 & partial bath w sink & toilet. does not have a fire pit. It is close to the baths. -Hammock Hallows closest to home but far enough away w paneling hill & garden btwn you & home for privacy. Easily walked from parking across back fence past the chickens and down a short path then to the left. It is a spacious site where you can pop up 1 or 2 tents. sky hammock gone. composting toilet in all sites a large bucket with leaf litter at bottom & seat with lid w tp & privacy. There are slopes, roots & pine pitch, be mindful. baths are wonderful & worth $ for work it takes to clean, fill & heat & mats for bottom. can provide wine, towels & eco-friendly bubble bath, just ask. enough privacy unless someone @ Fern Gully. Heard great horned owls, barred owls hooting & red fox. Day were visited by bobcat. There are many chickens, friendly rooster & bunny. Andrea has a vision. Great set up, responsive hosts, lovely, quiet area that was still close enough to larger towns/cities. Exactly what we were looking for. We’d stay again, highly recommend!
