With 60 acres for your enjoyment and gated entrance, you won’t see anyone else during your whole stay! 15 min from I-49 with Walmarts and gas stations even nearer keeps you close to town. You can choose from multiple campsites, but we will not book anyone else during your stay.
Camp right next to the Illinois River under giant oaks, ash trees, and sycamores with a waterfall behind you and the river in front. Or move up the hill and enjoy the 10 mile view (when leaves are dropped) while watching the sunset. Seriously, it’s the best view west of Fayetteville. The deep shade of the campsite with the breeze coming over river keeps the space surprisingly cool even in extreme heat. Feeling fun? Camp in the old dirt mine with 10’ walls around you shaded by a massive pine growing in the center and oaks around the perimeter.
Hiking trails have been cut for you to enjoy the property. Make sure to check out “Mini Hawksbill Crag”- a rocky outcropping hanging off the cliff side. Another fun trail leads you up a creek bed with multiple small waterfalls.
A couple canoes and kayaks are available to float the river if you desire as an add on. You can go upstream easily in normal water flow!
If you’re looking for fun family time with your kids, I will do whatever I can to help you during your stay to make lasting memories. We’re big believers in families enjoying the outdoors together!
A truck can be driven to riverside campsite when dry or there is a 100 yard walk from a small parking area. More vehicles can be parked on top of hill which is 5 minute walk.
There is a picnic table and fire pit at the riverside campsite. Bald Eagles are seen most days in the winter. Birders will also appreciate the feeder in the campsite.
Fishing poles are available as an add on. You can bring your own too! Catch small mouth, large mouth, bream, crappie, catfish, gar, and carp/buffalo, but you’re competing with the neighborhood beaver so be on the lookout for him! Please release small mouth besides a legal keeper is 14" (6-7 year old fish!) and limit of 2.
Rear wheeled drive vehicles should park at the parking area by old stable

This land is a six acre slice of property that includes a meadow, wooded areas, a small pine forest, native stones galore, a steep mountain side, giant boulders, a wet weather stream and pond, and 2 old tin barns. From West to East, the property starts flat but then begins to slope upward as it runs from the base of Fitzgerald Mountain Eastward nearly to the top of the mountain. The former homestead was removed within the past 20 years, creating a fantastic spot for the campground. It is located a short distance from Fitzgerald Station, which was a well known stop on Military road (later known as Butterfield stage line) in the 1830’s. The camp is only 2 miles from historic downtown Springdale, which is an area undergoing exciting revitalization. A concrete trail is planned that will connect the camp area to downtown making biking to restaurants and pubs much easier in the near future. Fitzgerald station is nearby, and served as a stop on the Butterfield overland stagecoach mail route that was used in the 1800s. Downtown Springdale is 2 miles away, and the pubs and restaurants cater to bikers. A paved trail is planned for the near future that will provide bike access to downtown.*Note* Backing up to a turn around area will be required for exit from the RV spots.

Sunset Mountain is an exclusive reservation only 18+ clothing optional/nudist campground located on my working cattle farm. (Please do not drive up to our gate and try to get in. Head North on Butterfield to connect with blue and black trails including the “best trail ever” and fantastic views from the mountain top. Head South to connect with trails for all skill levels including a strider course for the kids at Bayyari Park. Bayyari Park is only 1/3 mile away and has public restrooms that I'm told "remain open until 10:00 PM year round unless there is extreme cold."The only neighbors of the camp have a small farm to the North, and their goats and peacock occasionally visit the camp’s Western field. Other than these neighbors, the area feels secluded, especially at the fire pit and barn area. Fitzgerald is a historical area. Fitzgerald station is nearby, and served as a stop on the Butterfield overland stagecoach mail route that was used in the 1800s. Downtown Springdale is 2 miles away, and the pubs and restaurants cater to bikers. A paved trail is planned for the near future that will provide bike access to downtown.*Note* Backing up to a turn around area will be required for exit from the RV spots.

Weekend Trip to Illinois River Paradise | 60 Acres
We had an amazing experience at Hipcamp. The property is absolutely beautiful, spread across roughly 60 acres of peaceful land that truly allows you to unplug and reconnect with nature. During our stay, we didn’t see any other campsites, which made the experience feel completely private and incredibly relaxing—exactly what we were hoping for.
The setting is quiet, scenic, and thoughtfully arranged, creating a sense of seclusion that’s hard to find. Even though we were only able to stay for one day, it was clear this is a special place meant for slowing down, exploring, and enjoying uninterrupted time outdoors. Everything felt comfortable and intentional, making it easy to settle in and enjoy the surroundings.
We would absolutely recommend staying at least two days to fully soak in everything this property has to offer, as one day simply wasn’t enough. This is a wonderful spot for anyone looking for peaceful, private camping, and we would happily return.

You might know of Joplin from Nat King Cole’s classic “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66.” Once a stop on the famed highway, today, Joplin is a small town on the rise, recovering from a devastating tornado. Travelers can check out picturesque Grand Falls, the Wildcat Glades natural area, and sites from the Route 66 heyday. Several private RV parks in Joplin and nearby Carthage provide amenities, but public parks are hard to find without venturing out of town.
