Our northern boundary is a tract of DeSoto National Forest, where we have practically exclusive access to another 90 acres of longleaf pine savannah and more bottomland creeks. The sandhills are a "desert in the rain," home to prickly pear cactus and yuccas, abundant lichens (deer "moss"), the endangered black pine snake, and our mascot, the also endangered Gopher Tortoise. We're a nature education and retreat center where we share permaculture practices, homesteading/sustainable living skills, conservation practices, and approaches to connecting more deeply to the land. Check out our sister non-profit, the Burrow Nature Center. You will have access to our many walking paths and our swimming pond, as well as a 15 minute walk to part of DeSoto National Forest, which butts up to our property line. Heart of the Country is our home and also your own personal twelve acre state park whenever you stay with us! We are less than 15 minutes from Interstate 10 and from Interstate 65. I offer a half-dozen campsites, all either on a relatively level paved driveway or grass. Power (20 amp and 30 amp) and water is available. We have two 30 amp campsites, which are first come, first served. WIFI is available! (please ask for password). We have a portable toilet for your use. This is a Longleaf Pine sanctuary with lots of nature trails. This is also a hobby farm with livestock (Donkey, two Goats, a Duck and a flock of Chickens). I feed the livestock grain every morning usually between 8 and 9 am, and again hay before dusk. You are always welcome to join me and I'll introduce all of them to you! My dog, Homer, is our very friendly welcoming ambassador who will enthusiastically great you upon your arrival. I put him up in his kennel each evening around dusk, then lock him in his shed until morning which keeps him from backing during the night. We also host an AirBnB, so other guests may be here as well. Texting via the app is our preferred mode of communication. If you call, please leave a message if I can't answer, and I will call you back. We are slowly updating the site photos. Use them only to determine your price, for example: A site with 30 amp power and water is $25 per night. A site with 20 amp power and water is $20 per night. Fulmer's Farmstead & General Store

Fulmer's Farmstead is tucked away in rural Beaumont, Mississippi about 30 minutes east of Hattiesburg. Among the pecan trees, you'll find the general store, Garden Shop, historic cabins, horse barn, livestock, gardens, vacation rentals, and RV sites. Vintage farm equipment and nostalgic memorabilia are scattered throughout the property. In any given season you can find chickens and pigeons roosting. We also raise cows, goats, and pigs. Farm dogs and cats roam the orchard freely. Don’t miss the strong and majestic Percheron draft horses that do the hard work of plowing the gardens for our homegrown veggies. The General Store is open 8 am - 5 pm, Monday - Saturday. Hot plate lunches are served from 11 am - 2 pm. Then grab a sweet treat to go made by our in-house baker. In December, we host a classic Christmas dinner and winter celebration for all to enjoy. And we've been home to the Mississippi Pecan Festival in September since 1986!

We tent camped for 3 weeks in November and Dave was extremely accommodating for our 3 week stay in November. Don't skip the hot tub! For van lifer types this is an ideal location. Good cell reception and a quiet atmosphere. There were extremely few insects and the sunset over Mobile each night is a brilliant orange. We used the YMCA Express in Spanish Fort for showers, gym, infrared sauna, and as a coffeeshop. it has a table area with outlets for laptops. The day pass there is $10.

Dave is the perfect host and has a beautiful location. Sunsets are amazing every day. Easy pull through location and easy to hook up on flat ground. Dollar General is a mile away and it’s about a 15 minute trip to Walmart, grocery and fast food. I highly recommend Heart of the Country for anyone wanting a peaceful get away.

1 night at River Life Camping in Alabama

We cannot say enough about how beautiful Vikrum’s land was. It was so peaceful and quiet and the river view and beaches were amazing. We had a little difficulty finding the initial turn off from the dirt road but the GPS directions lead us right to it. We just didn’t listen to them 🙄. The trail to the campsite was totally passable for a Tacoma and a grand Highlander. We loved it and so did our pups! We will totally be back. Thank you for a wonderful little break from reality!

Great spot! The site had a nice flattened area for my tent a little into a wooded area. I was able to hang my hammock. And the spot is right in the edge of the walking trails which was lovely. I also had some car troubles and Jordan was very responsive and helpful!

The hosts were friendly and informative and very helpful with directions. The sight was the perfect size for all our gear with a great view of the pond. I decided on an afternoon swim after unpacking and was blown away by the crystal clear water and fish swimming around me. Not to mention the beautiful hand crafted community area on the shoreline. Everything was very well maintained while staying mindful of the surrounding ecosystem. My only regret was not booking another night and having more time to explore this beautiful property and catch one of the community fires!

We’ve camped at this spot several times now, and every visit just reinforces why we keep coming back. The property is absolutely beautiful — serene, quiet, and nestled right on the banks of the Escatawpa River. Whether you’re relaxing by the water or waking up to the sounds of nature, it’s the kind of place that instantly makes you feel grounded and at peace. The primitive camping setup is exactly what we love — no frills, just raw nature. It’s the perfect environment to unplug, reconnect, and even brush up on some survival skills. My two boys especially enjoy the experience; they’re always excited to explore the woods, learn new outdoor skills, and just be outside without the distractions of screens. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape where you can truly disconnect and appreciate the natural world, this spot is a must. We’re already looking forward to our next trip.
