In the 1950's, the property was a drive-in motel called the 'Harbert Motel'. The Man's Annex aka the Mannex is located on Scenic US HWY 12 to the South and The South Shore Commuter Rail to the North. The campsite is very clean, tidy and safe. The main pebble parking area slopes gently to the North so you will want levelers if you're in a camper. I have a brand new RV Pedestal complete with 50 and 30amp service, a mechanical timer for the LED lights encompassing the parking area as well as a rheostat so you can dim the lights. I have a 40" firepit with spark arrestor (please use to be in compliance with local laws) as well as a polywood octagonal picnic table and well water with 100' hose. Trash and human waste is to be carried out. Please keep your camper to the east of the blue and yellow birdhouses as access to the building is needed. The location is great! You're inside the dunes national park and only 1.35 miles to the beach. Just north of the train tracks is the Calumet bike path. .35 to the west is a gas station with a bathroom, the south shore train station (day trip to Chicago anyone?), a great restaurant and liquor store as well. Bikes are HIGHLY recommended to be able to help facilitate your exploring of this very unique part of the country. If you're a birder and you don't already know, bring your binocs, this is one of the best birding towns in the Midwest / country due to the location and it's biodiversity.

This is a 3rd generation "Family Farm" of a different sort I suppose. Seems there's a bit of everything here, and arguably not enough of anything. At least for conventional farming. So we've learned to do things a bit differently.Our main crop is wine and juice grapes since our topography, climate, and soil type makes it a premier location for that. But with 30+ acres of forested hillsides, low ground, and natural areas we've evolved into a mixed farm and forest enterprise. Our goal is to utilize the productivity of all our property while still retaining the basic character and usefulness of the wild areas. Letting each thing be what it wants to be and does best on it's own. Flow, not force.So our year starts early with tapping maple trees and making maple syrup. Plus there's grape trimming about this time as well. When the forest floor starts to green up a bit later, we start digging Ramps, or Wild Leeks in the woods. Most of these will go to the more trendy Chicago restaurants, but we also have some local sales. Next comes inoculating winter-cut logs with Shiitake spawn for next years mushroom production. This year we also conducted a few hands-on workshop seminars on mushroom growing as well. Then it's on to our raised bed herb & veggie gardens. (Fresh herbs are just so much fun to cook with!) We grow enough for our own yearly use, as well as some for direct sales. Summer keeps us busy tending all the different crops here and trying to keep up. But there's that steady progression of fresh veggies to eat. Yum !!! Fall brings our annual Grape U-Pick in September and October. And we try to time related crops like mums, pumpkins, and gourds for this same time frame. Makes the place a bit more interesting. Late fall is when we bring in firewood to heat the house and workshop. Stacks of wood everywhere. Hopefully before the 1st snow. In winter it's time to fire up the woodworking shop and be a bit creative. Build furniture, equipment maintenance, who knows what next years projects will include. I like to keep everybody guessing.So, that's what goes on here. You're welcome to check it out, lend a hand, relax back at camp, walk the vineyards and/or forest, or just breathe and relax. That's up to you. But I would recommend visiting a few of the fine local wineries. Seems there's a festival going on at one or another of them just about every weekend. Good music, good wine, good times. And there's the Lake Michigan beaches a few miles down the road.Yeah, this is a pretty casual place here, love meeting new people, very open to civil discussions of all sorts.However, rude, ill mannered people will probably enjoy staying elsewhere. The place looked great when we arrived, especially lit up at night. Inside, it had that familiar campfire-and-wood smell that made it feel comfortable right away. The heated blanket was the saving grace of the stay. It was in the 30s, and the small radiator heater struggled to keep up, so most of the evening was spent bundled up together under the blanket. The cabin is very small, and the property itself isn’t large either, so you can hear some street noise. Being close to town was convenient, though. We grabbed Chinese carry-out and it was surprisingly good after a cold day. Leslie was thrilled to meet the alpacas, which added a fun moment to the trip. There are several areas set up for groups, and I would definitely come back with friends. The space works well for hanging out and enjoying a simple, low-key getaway.

What a great little spot to camp for the weekend. I loved waking up and having a view of the river and the woods on the other side. Kat provided everything we needed, including a s'mores kit! Our site was far enough away from the other sites that we had privacy. This campsite was great for peace and quiet and space to get away with our little dog.

We had a great time tent camping at John’s site! There was plenty of space, a nearby port-a-potty, and a grill and table all set up so we didn’t have to bring as much with us as we normally would. There’s a nice trail behind the site and plenty of tree coverage in case of rain or too much sun. John was very accommodating making sure we had everything we needed. We’re thinking of coming back again next year for our yearly trip. Thanks John!

Had a wonderful weekend at Bloomin Farm. The campsite was well tended and Melissa had left the wood we purchased near the fire pit as well as a lovely welcome sign and flowers. We had our own compost toilet and in warmer weather there is a hot shower tent on the campsite as well. There is some road noise but it was not bothersome at all. And our second night the farm hosted a Halloween event with food and live music, which was great fun and Melissa gave us plenty of warning so we knew it was happening. Would definitely stay there again!

Oh man! What an amazing place. Great private spot, great host, very accommodating and friendly, would 100% stay here again. Definitely a back in site as advertised we had a 30 foot travel trailer. But It was not too bad to navigate. Concrete drive and level. Very quiet the whole week. Duck hunting season was happening during our visit so the mornings but I actually enjoyed listening to that in the morning while walking the dog. Great outdoors experience, quiet neighborhood

Our tent camping experience here was wonderful! The autumn foliage was beautiful surrounding the vineyard and Mr. John provide a lot of things (picnic table, cooking prep area, fire pit, wood, and more) at our site to make our stay easier. We were fortunate enough to visit during u pick season and sample the delicious grapes in the vineyard. Definitely ask for restaurant recs from Mr. John too.
