Just 40 minutes outside DC, Smallwood State Park is a 628 acre paradise with a marina, boat launching ramps, a picnic area, camping area, pavilions, a recycled tire playground and nature trails. The park is on the Mattawoman Creek, less than a mile from the Potomac River, but if you’re ready to swim, errrr, boat/fish with the big fish, the Potomac River is just a mile away. The Marshland Nature Center and Civil War Museum host a number of summer programs for all ages, and children 7-12 years of age can learn what it takes to be a naturalist in the Junior Ranger program. The park can fill to capacity on summer weekends and holidays, but there’s always night fishing. Point Lookout has three fishing areas that stay open as long as your local Kwik-E-Mart, including a 710-foot fishing pier.

Weekend Trip to Blackwater Tiny Cabin on Snakehead
What a lovely little weekend getaway. Just right for our Valentines Weekend 💝. Loved the extra touches like k cup coffee machine with cups and creamer shower shampoo and body wash, fresh towels and warm blankets. Glad there was a little fridge for dinner leftovers too. We enjoyed meeting the sheep too.

1 night at Blackwater Tiny Cabin on Snakehead
This little house was wonderful! It had everything I needed for my overnight stay and more! What a great way to spend time in the area visiting the many interesting sites and biking around. Lisa had everything set up perfectly and was available to answer any questions I had (like what is your goat’s name? And can I just help myself to these kayaks?). So conveniently located, quiet, and well adorned. This cute house exceeded my expectations!

Weekend Trip to Blackwater Tiny Cabin on Snakehead
The Blackwater Tiny Cabin was just what we needed. Although our stay was just overnight, it was perfect. Made an evening campfire outside and the view was beautiful. Very peaceful and relaxing. Highly recommended. The host was extremely helpful.
