Threshold Learning Center is 28 acres of prairie, creek, woods, and our barn dormitory. Threshold is first, an outdoor learning center for schools during the school year, and a summer camp offering several day camps, family camps, and trips. As a non-profit, however, we are constantly trying to find a way to offer our programs to everyone regardless of whether they are able to pay our fees while still making enough money to stay open. We started renting TLC to the public 5 years ago for weddings, reunions, or just families who are looking to connect to the world around them. Our 3-acre pasture borders a 13-mile recreational trail that encompasses our entire town. Super easy access to the trail via bike, golf cart, or on foot to the middle school, high school, community auditorium, William Penn University or Lacey Recreational Complex. We live approximately 150 yards from the city limits, but are on a gravel road. It is an easy 7-minute drive to the grocery store, 2 minutes to the local hospital, and the trail is accessible to walkers, golf carts and bicyclists. Our property does not have any hookups, but if needed, there is are a couple of spots where a 110 connection could be accommodated (for an additional $5/night) close to our home that we could have discussions about using. My husband and are I both retired and our property is LGBTQIA+ friendly.
Please note on the three acres, we do have 15 laying hens who free-range during the day, but are confined at night. They typically do not have any desire to interact with humans unless you are feeding them and should not present any problems. IF you bring a pet, please insure it is kept controlled and not allowed to interact with our hens or the folks using the recreational trail. As a bonus, for $5 per person we would be happy to whip up a farm-fresh egg breakfast each morning you stay with us.
During summer months, guests are welcome to use our above-ground fully-enclosed pool complete with outdoor shower (heated by the power of the sun shining on a garden hose which means hot water is VERY limited!). There is a tiki bar, small deck and lawn furniture inside the pool enclosure.

We open year-round!! The winter camping is on the way! We believe each season has its special nature-beauty, so we open year-round. This secluded, beautiful, pet-friendly 40 acres of fenced camping site is on hilly land and is rare in Iowa, with a view of 3.5 private fishing ponds and a far view of the Red Rock Lake. There are 10 acres nature timber area that keep you away from the other campers and the rest of the world. Each site has a firepit, picnic table, and a solar light. The drinking water is at the entrance, but no electricity on. There are tons of natural features, you may see deer, rabbits, and other game birds by your campsite. Each camping sites have good distance to keep privacy from each other.
A recently built 20ft diameter geodesic glamping dome tent is for those who want a more climate-controlled stay while still enjoying the magnificent gifts.
For surrounding areas, the nearby White Breast Beach is open from May 23 to September 3, 2026, with boating, hunting, and hiking activities in Lake Red Rock. For our campers' safety, any hunting activities are not allowed within our camping ground. However, in case you come hunting with Iowa hunting tags, a couple of public hunting grounds are near our camping ground.
The recently built glamping geodesic Dome tent is located on top of a hill. You will have a fantastic sunset view of ponds and a lake view while enjoying the great nature and having a comfortable stay.
The cell phone signals are good from most providers; you may use your cell phone hotspot work remotely at this astonishing Lake Red Rock Oasis ^_^.

A little history of this land:
These 40 acres of land were a surface mining site. The reclamation works done
during the 1970s. But over the years, the soil was seriously eroded. Anna and Peilin, who have Master's and PhD in soil and environmental health backgrounds, bought this land several years ago and started to restore the vegetation. Now the site looks beautiful and ready for the nature lovers and campers to enjoy the fantastic view of the lake, ponds, hills, and tall grass, Butterflys... The site is totally different from what Google Maps shows now.

We were in town for William Penn's graduation and the Tulip Festival in Pella. The location was great because it's so close to town yet it is on a remote gravel road with no loud neighbors or road noise. The hosts were perfectly accommodating. We set up our slide in camper in their driveway and had water and electric hookup. They provided a fire ring and firewood. Their pool area has solar decorative lights that create a vibe after dark. They did offer to let us move further away from their home near their barn but we were happy where we were. You could see an entrance to the city's trail system right from the site. Wish we would have brought our bikes. Will definitely set up here again when we come back to town.

The Hobbit House was a great place to stay! Cute hobbit interior to match the outside of the house! Perfect location within the farm. The parking and porta potty are short walks away from the house. We cooked steaks over the fire for dinner and enjoyed the waffle breakfast that Jessica brought to us in the morning!! Dogs are welcomed also!

My family had a great time at Windy Goat Acres. Jessica was very friendly and accommodating. We love spending time feeding and watching the animals as well as exploring all of the little areas set up all over the property. We walked several of the trails and loved the view from the top of the hill. While I'm not personally fond of staying in cabins (this was a family gift), I would definitely go here again just for all of the experiences.

We loved staying at the Hobbit House and Windy Goat Acres! It was truly so relaxing and peaceful. A perfect place to reconnect with nature, play games, read a book, and enjoy the land/animals. We tacked on the Goat Social as an extra to our stay and it was incredible. We were able to pet the baby goats and be in the barn with other animals. Jessica & Jim were so kind and welcoming! I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a calm weekend away!

We really enjoyed our stay at Pilgrim Heights! We originally booked the Pinn Oak Cabin/bunkhouse but it was unavailable. The staff were quick to respond and moved us to the oak Lodge, which honestly better suited our needs. We found the lodge to be spacious, clean, comfortable with a full kitchen, full bath, and even a little bunk house. The only thing that I have to say as constructive feedback is that there was a coffee pot and coffee filters, but no coffee. Also, one wall of the lodge is almost entirely windows and the window coverings are somewhat limited so when the sun came up a little after six, we were up with it. Still no complaints and we stopped for coffee locally after a well rested night. I would recommend to other others and we would definitely stay again. Although we didn’t get to enjoy the amenities, the grounds were beautiful with a large fire pit and a beautiful view of sportsman Lake.

Jess & Jim are welcoming, accommodating and super helpful if you need something (like going out to get propane, swapping it out & coming in to start the fireplace- thanks again, Jim!)
Such a special spot & they make it feel like a "home away from home" - offering beautiful yurts & cabins, add-ons like dry firewood and a waffle bar (HIGHLY RECCOMEND!), a spacious farm filled with fun & quirky animals and hidden gems all throughout the property.
I can't put it into words just how grateful I am for Windy Goat Acres, Jess & Jim, and a spot where I can just breathe and rest my soul.

I highly recommend Queen Armadillo's Yurt, the waffle basket add-on and walking up the trails behind the accommodations to view a breathtaking view of the rolling hills of Iowa.
