Our property is a quiet stretch of rural southwest Iowa farmland near Hawthorne, centered around a peaceful, stocked pond surrounded by wide-open row crop fields. This isn’t a commercial campground — it’s a simple, private slice of country where you can slow down, cast a line, float on the water, and enjoy true Midwestern quiet.
Set about a quarter mile off a low-traffic gravel road, the pond offers privacy, minimal noise, and very low light pollution. On clear nights, the sky fills with stars, and the sounds of frogs and evening breezes replace traffic and city noise.
The pond is stocked and open for catch-and-release fishing. Swimming is allowed, and guests are welcome to bring kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and other non-motorized watercraft. The shoreline is open for walking, relaxing, and finding your favorite sunset spot.
An old railroad caboose sits near the pond, adding a unique touch of character and history to the setting (interior not accessible).
This is intentionally a primitive camping experience. There are no hookups, no potable water, and no restroom facilities at this time. A 110v outlet is available near Site A for light-duty use, and trash drums are provided. Guests should come prepared and plan to be self-sufficient.
We welcome respectful campers who appreciate simple outdoor experiences — quiet mornings by the water, kids learning to fish, or peaceful evenings under wide Iowa skies. If both campsites are occupied, they sit across the pond from each other, allowing space and separation while sharing the same beautiful setting. We had a wonderful, relaxing weekend at Waypoint. We enjoyed walking the nature trails and fishing in the pond. We even visited the alpacas. Emma kindly gave us an educational tour of all of their animal friends including dogs, cats, chickens, goats, and alpacas. Emma was very patient with our kid's many questions. The land is kept wild except for the camping spots and trails. We will definitely return.

This place is wonderful! A much needed respite after a long journey. The grounds are lush and immaculately maintained with ample shade. We enjoyed walking our dogs on the perfectly mowed pathways and listening to the frogs in the nearby pond. Yes there is noise from the freeway but we weren’t bothered by it at all and you can’t beat the location for convenience. Clean bathrooms and hot showers rounded out a delightful stay. I hope we get to visit again.

We spent the weekend at The Waypoint in Iowa for our maiden voyage with our new Airstream, and it couldn’t have been a better choice. The site is peaceful and remote, yet easy to find and conveniently close to the interstate. The setting is beautiful—quiet, open, and surrounded by nature, making it a perfect place to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. On the drive to the camping spot, we passed by the hosts’ friendly animals, including llamas, chickens, and their two beautiful white Pyrenees dogs, which added a charming, pastoral touch to the experience. The hosts were friendly and welcoming, and the site itself was well-maintained and thoughtfully set up. We left feeling refreshed and are already looking forward to returning. Highly recommend The Waypoint for anyone looking for a serene and comfortable camping experience.
