Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is a gas grill and propane single burner. Bathroom has manual flush toilet,. This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. You can charge your phone and have a lamp in your cabin. No wifi. Good cell coverage. The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! Our glamping cabins are in the front 3 acres. The back 17 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve.

We enjoyed our stay at the Tranquil Duck. It was nice and cool, which was great after a hot day. The shower was nice and we enjoyed coffee with the ducks and pea fowl. They were so cute! Very comfortable and a nice stay close to volcano national park and Hilo. We would love to come back!

Weekend Trip to Stone & Sky Homestead

We loved our experience staying at sky and stone for our week here in Hawaii. The property lays on top of lava rocks and the view of the ocean from our room is incredible. The property itself has everything you need, a clean working shower with toilet, oven with stovetop and fridge. The room has two beds but definitely enough space for 3. The host was extremely accommodating and helpful for finding local gems. Highly recommend staying here for your next trip to Hawaii!!

Donie has such a caring heart. He is so kind and went way above and beyond for me to get wifi working. He has a kind heart and a gentle soul and really wants to always do his best. You'll be in good hands staying with him! The bed was very comfortable, he treats his guests to fine linen! Egyptian cotton sheets and towels and they don't smell like scented soap. He made me coconut cream the next day for my tea and sent me off with blessings. It was a great experience to see his setup at the Lava Fields. I felt comfortable and cozy. I highly recommend giving his place a try!

Weekend Trip to The Tranquil Homestead

We loved Christopher and Esther's little homestead! The location was perfect: secluded and serene, but close enough to Hilo and Volcano. The ducks and peafowl absolutely made the trip. It brought us so much joy seeing them all waddle down to our spot to greet us, even if all they wanted was for us to feed them duck food! The place was clean, the kitchen was well stocked, and the hosts were super helpful and friendly. Will definitely be booking this again!

My husband and I stayed at Guava Cabin and absolutely loved it. It felt so quiet and private, and we loved hearing the birds all throughout the day and night. Falling asleep to the sound of the rain was perfect and made the whole experience feel so peaceful and relaxing. The hosts were also incredibly friendly and welcoming which made our stay even better. I loved the private location, the mesmerizing sound of the Koki frogs, the wild pigs and piglets, roosters, pheasants and chickens. The resident cats and dog were sweet and Christophe and Bonnie were just lovely people. We rented Scooters and visited many shoreline access points, and the recommendations for places to eat and check out were on point! Reading in the hammock and the hanging pod were favourites of ours, it was such a great home base for our Adventuring.

Thomas’ land/cottage is the perfect place for a remote, comfortable night close to Volcano National Park. He is a very gracious host and willing to assist you in any way necessary. I definitely would recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap, yet comfortable place to stay.

We stayed here for two nights with my wife. Even beyond what the reviews and photos show, Christopher & Esther were truly wonderful hosts, and The Tropical Duck is a beautiful place filled with charming animals. If you’ve found this place, I highly recommend staying here. The cabin had everything we needed, and everything was clean and very comfortable. We also tried the optional duck eggs for the first time—they were very large and delicious. Feeding the ducks, seeing peacocks up close, and spending time comfortably surrounded by Hawaii’s great nature was an unforgettable experience. Most of all, it made me so happy that my wife said she wished we could have stayed longer and that she wants to come back again. Next time we visit Hawaii, we’ll definitely return with our family and children. Thank you so much, Christopher & Esther!

Probably the best hip camp we've stayed at yet, I could literally live out of this little cabin. The property is beautiful, the ducks and peacocks were so cute and the hosts Ester and Christopher were very kind. The only thing I'd change is that I wish we booked more nights here.

Clean cabin, helpful and responsive hosts, very quiet atmosphere. No street noise at all, just birds and rain. There are 2 dogs that can be noisy at times, and can steal your shoes if you leave them outside. Plenty of space inside to store them. Shower wasn’t working when we arrived but was fixed by the second day.

The tree frog serenade must be heard to be believed. If you're looking for an inexpensive and beautiful place to stay near Volcanoes, Yip Camp is great -- has a marine toilet, an enclosed shower with hot water, and Thomas keeps fresh batteries in numerous lanterns for you to use. They're in the middle of a fern and 'ohia tree forest. Thomas and Yip the dog are friendly and courteous. Don't be put off by the drive on a dirt road -- there are plenty of those in Big Island upcountry!

This is a special place, accessible, private and well maintained. The yip cottage with a hot shower is fun and well appointed. Even with other campers on site there was plenty of room and privacy. The cool night temperatures made it restful. Mahalo, Tom for the great conversations and hosting. I enjoyed the stay!

Small frogs sing you a lullaby at night, and ducks welcome you in the morning. Our kids especially loved the ducks and peacocks! We had plenty of privacy, along with great support from Chris and Esther whenever we needed it. An additional advantage of staying here is that it’s an off-grid place, so even during storms, when the public electricity is down, you still have power. The location is also great — very close to Volcanoes National Park, which made exploring the area easy and convenient. We had a wonderful stay at Tropical Duck and an amazing experience with the hosts — we would love to come back one day.
