Our property is in a secluded neighborhood, a 4.2 mile drive in from the main road (Highway 11). The drive in or out should take about 10-15 minutes. Volcano National Park is 19 miles from our home and will take about 30 minutes to drive. We are 18 miles from Hilo Farmers Market/downtown Hilo and again should take about 30 minutes. Pahoa area is 20 miles from us and just past a 30 minute drive. Tour the island during the day and come back to a spacious, private courtyard campsite where you can experience the beauty and sounds of our forest sanctuary.

In addition to growing food, we are also raising many animals and two children! You will see the girls up early in the morning playing with our three temple cats.
We are committed to living in harmony with the land, and as such we are mostly off-grid and catch our own water. We sort all of our trash meticulously for recycling. Currently plastic is NOT recycled on this island, so our Kuleana (responsibility) is to buy as little plastic as possible. We use only biodegradable and eco-friendly soaps, shampoo, laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, etc. It’s a great experience in taking small actions to show our love to the ’āina (the land).

Wild and organic. That is the best way to describe our gardens. Our hanai mom started caring for this land over forty years ago. Her passion for flowers, fruits and organic, simple living can still be seen even in our attempts to gain some control. The land is in my sisters and my care now and we hope to honor her, keeping everything organic. Fighting back the invasive plants and continuing to plant more flowers, fruits and vegetables. Our tropical rainforest, with forty years of love, beautiful organic gardens, tangerines, avocados, kukui, rhododendron, anthurium, hibiscus, and so much more to wander and enjoy. Rene would tell us how the railroad ended at the grove. We have found evidence. When the sky is clear at night you can see the milky way. This is my favorite place. I hope you enjoy.
There are things to be aware of, it's camping outdoors. There are bugs. Mosquitos, centipedes, fire ants. And there are pigs. Diatomaceous earth is great to put down before making camp. It's natural and detours bugs of all kinds. With the pigs, be louder and bigger than them and don't get between babies and parents.

Lava covered the site on 5 September 1990, after more than a thousand years of peaceful fertility. The flow met the Hakuma horst and was diverted north, filling the village of Kalapana and the beautiful Kaimu Bay. Lava continued to flow in the area for another 20 years, until 2011. We are restoring the fertility by bringing in mulch and soil and planting coconuts, mango trees, moringa, plumeria, figs, dragonfruits, and more.
Near the camp sites we've recently constructed a house out of local wood; it provides some shelter from the nearly constant trade winds. Premium strawberry guava BBQ firewood can be purchased by prior arrangement. There's a shower with cold water; it doesn't get very cold!

Mauna Loa Camp is about 20 minutes from Hilo on "The Big Island" (Hawaii) in the Hawaiian Acres neighborhood. The actual address is 16-1648 Ooaa Rd. (Road #6), Kurtistown, HI 96760. It’s a 3-acre parcel that’s entirely fenced, with wide open areas to set up wherever you like.
We planted lots of fruit trees in 2025 and 2026, and we expect to harvest fruit in 1–3 years. The air is fresh, and the stars are amazing — like I’ve never seen before. I also love the Coqui Frog songs at night.
This location is ideal for taking day trips anywhere on the island (about 2 hours to Kona). The waterfront in Hilo is unique, with calm pools of water set well inland from the ocean. Wild orchids and flowers grow at the camp.
You can pick wild strawberry guava or hit the local markets for incredible fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan, soursop, oranges, tangerines, avocado, starfruit, lemon, macadamia nuts, pineapple, and banana. All of these are available at markets when in season, and in a few years, some can be picked right at Mauna Loa Camp (perhaps by 2028).
I live in the Rochester, NY area and we operate four camps in NY, one in SC, and one in FL. Our sites are rustic — no electricity, no water — just you and nature. We provide portable toilets and/or a porta-potty, and there is a public shower at a park in Hilo. Our goal is to keep our camps simple and in harmony with nature.
We expect respect for our land and neighbors, with absolutely zero trash left behind (carry in, carry out). You will love it — everyone does. Hawaii is a special place, and we feel so lucky to be part of it!
We rent to only one group at a time, ensuring total privacy. My friends and neighbors in the area are wonderful assets, making it a lovely place to be one with our planet and nature.

Hipcamp’s best, most temperate, comfortable weather on the island. Parking is available outside the gate, with additional space inside a locked double-wide gate for secure access. The property sits under a canopy of rainbow eucalyptus on 3 quiet acres, backed by a Hawaiian reserve.
The cabin is a tranquil 2-bedroom, semi–open-air space with a loft. The loft is accessed by small stairs and is not disability accessible. The other sleeping area is open with new flooring—please bring a sleep pad. There is no bed at this time. An attached open-air kitchen area includes water collection and basic food utensils.
Message me with any needs or questions, and I’ll do my best to help. There’s also a solar setup you can connect to if you have a solar generator. The food forest and garden areas are young and still establishing. If you hike, stay aware of your surroundings—there are lava tubes and uneven drops. The trails are safe if you choose to explore.
You’ll also find the biggest ʻōhiʻa I’ve ever seen near the corner of the cabin. I value respect and privacy, and you can count on that from me. If you happen to notice my security camera, it is not active. While you’re here, it’s your place—your liberty and peace matter most. Make yourself at home and enjoy.

Currently plastic is NOT recycled on this island, so our Kuleana (responsibility) is to buy as little plastic as possible. Wild and organic. That is the best way to describe our gardens. Our hanai mom started caring for this land over forty years ago. There are things to be aware of, it's camping outdoors. There are bugs. Mosquitos, centipedes, fire ants. And there are pigs. Diatomaceous earth is great to put down before making camp. It's natural and detours bugs of all kinds. With the pigs, be louder and bigger than them and don't get between babies and parents.

Lava covered the site on 5 September 1990, after more than a thousand years of peaceful fertility. The flow met the Hakuma horst and was diverted north, filling the village of Kalapana and the beautiful Kaimu Bay. Lava continued to flow in the area for another 20 years, until 2011. We are restoring the fertility by bringing in mulch and soil and planting coconuts, mango trees, moringa, plumeria, figs, dragonfruits, and more.
Near the camp sites we've recently constructed a house out of local wood; it provides some shelter from the nearly constant trade winds. Premium strawberry guava BBQ firewood can be purchased by prior arrangement. There's a shower with cold water; it doesn't get very cold!

Mauna Loa Camp is about 20 minutes from Hilo on "The Big Island" (Hawaii) in the Hawaiian Acres neighborhood. The actual address is 16-1648 Ooaa Rd. (Road #6), Kurtistown, HI 96760. It’s a 3-acre parcel that’s entirely fenced, with wide open areas to set up wherever you like.
We planted lots of fruit trees in 2025 and 2026, and we expect to harvest fruit in 1–3 years. The air is fresh, and the stars are amazing — like I’ve never seen before. I also love the Coqui Frog songs at night.
This location is ideal for taking day trips anywhere on the island (about 2 hours to Kona). The waterfront in Hilo is unique, with calm pools of water set well inland from the ocean. Wild orchids and flowers grow at the camp.
You can pick wild strawberry guava or hit the local markets for incredible fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan, soursop, oranges, tangerines, avocado, starfruit, lemon, macadamia nuts, pineapple, and banana. All of these are available at markets when in season, and in a few years, some can be picked right at Mauna Loa Camp (perhaps by 2028).
I live in the Rochester, NY area and we operate four camps in NY, one in SC, and one in FL. Our sites are rustic — no electricity, no water — just you and nature. We provide portable toilets and/or a porta-potty, and there is a public shower at a park in Hilo. Our goal is to keep our camps simple and in harmony with nature.
We expect respect for our land and neighbors, with absolutely zero trash left behind (carry in, carry out). You will love it — everyone does. Hawaii is a special place, and we feel so lucky to be part of it!

Hipcamp’s best, most temperate, comfortable weather on the island. Parking is available outside the gate, with additional space inside a locked double-wide gate for secure access. The property sits under a canopy of rainbow eucalyptus on 3 quiet acres, backed by a Hawaiian reserve.
The cabin is a tranquil 2-bedroom, semi–open-air space with a loft. The loft is accessed by small stairs and is not disability accessible. The other sleeping area is open with new flooring—please bring a sleep pad. There is no bed at this time. An attached open-air kitchen area includes water collection and basic food utensils.
Message me with any needs or questions, and I’ll do my best to help. There’s also a solar setup you can connect to if you have a solar generator. The food forest and garden areas are young and still establishing. If you hike, stay aware of your surroundings—there are lava tubes and uneven drops. The trails are safe if you choose to explore.
You’ll also find the biggest ʻōhiʻa I’ve ever seen near the corner of the cabin. I value respect and privacy, and you can count on that from me. If you happen to notice my security camera, it is not active. While you’re here, it’s your place—your liberty and peace matter most. Make yourself at home and enjoy.

We got in late and had to leave early, but the facilities we used (shower, bathroom) were wonderful. The groundskeeper was very kind and helpful, and the property is well attended to. Directions were well written. Would absolutely stay here again and get to enjoy it for longer.

We had a great time here, especially enjoying the hot tub and campfires we made. With the loss of Isaac Hale campground there aren’t many options for public campgrounds anywhere nearby so this hipcamp was a great option for touring around the 2018 lava flows and Puna area beaches. The directions were easy to follow and the potholes in the access road easy enough to navigate in any car. Campsites flat but soil in this area is lava rock under the grass so tent pegs a bit hard to get in. Only one bathroom could be a problem at times but it worked out ok. We would recommend and return again.

Like the other reviews say, this is a great spot to camp. The yard is super well kept, flat site, full bathroom access. It poured while we were there which made the hot tub a nice treat. View of the waves crashing is amazing. It's quiet and peaceful. Host was happy to share his knowledge about the botanicals, fruit trees and land. Can pick ripe fruit and dogs are friendly.

What a wonderful place to stay over in Hilo. We were on a camping trip and having a spot with lots of covered areas and amenities for not much more than the price of a county park campsite was so appreciated. We had pretty torrential rains during our stay and made the most of the covered kitchen and TV area during the evening. The hosts were helpful in recommending the least-wet area to pitch our tent and we were grateful to be able to do laundry. So close to some of the best beaches in Hilo, too! Would definitely stay again.

Easy to find and set up. Shower was wonderful. The dog (Knobs) was great. Quiet and clean. Mae is a delightful host.

GREAT STAY! Shawn is a great host, attentive & friendly! We loved having fresh coconut delivered everyday & the scenery was paradise! The location is great, central to lots of different sights to see! We explored the volcanoes, sea view was a really cool drive, Hilo nearby waterfalls. There was never a shortage of things to do! The nearby Sunday Maku’u market was HUGE!
This was such a nice place to come home to every night & enjoy a campfire & star gazing.
Also- nice bathrooms!

We had access to toilets, showers and two common areas. Everything was clean and easily accessible. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Washers and dryers were available as well.

I can’t say enough about this little piece of heaven, it is absolutely stunning, breathtaking. Blaze and Shawn were very friendly and quick to answer any questions. The bathroom facilities were clean uncomfortable, better than expected when camping. The fruit trees are beautiful, no need to buy limes for our cocktails as they were growing beside us! They have several dogs who run the property and are friendly. Our first night there we saw whales and turtles off the cliffs! Beautiful pool, relaxing atmosphere, quiet, serene, MAGICAL❤️

Beautiful piece of property, I would highly recommend staying here. I would definitely stay here again!
Blaiz brother Sean is very accommodating We came in late he made sure to get a settled. He was accommodating to our little dogs.
Beautifully landscaped oceanfront with a saltwater pool in jacuzzi.
Clean, well kept. They also accommodated the fact that we had to reschedule due to business related circumstances.
The best hip camp I have ever stayed on.
