After arriving between 12-4 pm at the meet up location; waipio valley's lookout pavilion, connected to flush toilet bathrooms, we will meet the Waipio resource ranger and kahuna. Proceeding down Waipio road as we drive your 4x4 vehicle parking at beach or guide your hui single file on foot 2.5 miles to Waipio's KOA to set camp for your stay. Please refrain from walking or driving Waipio road prior to or after our meetup as the current road safety restrictions prohibit all non-Hawaiian island residents from entering the valley without a waipio valley resident-chauffer/sherpa.
Waipio KOA is an active farm to table fruit orchard, la'au lapa au medicine garden, and po'ai ohana community center.
Waipio KOA shares a mission to unify the seven star tribes from all major honua (earth) continents in po'ai (circle) formation to spread equality, peace, and harmony around our shared planet earth (honua).

Once your camp is set, you will be walking distance from a potable spring, waterfalls, a black sand beach, Waipio stream and Waimanu Valley campground 9 miles on the Muliwai wilderness reserve trail. Wild horses, birds, pigs and kalo farmers are commonly scene throughout the valley. When surf and ocean conditions allow, you may enjoy kayaking, swimming, diving, fishing, surfing and seasonal bird, whale, and dolphin watching.
As camp hosts we will provide the best guidance during your stay and are available for more intimate one on one assistance with your choice of activities should you need. Please specify what your intentions for this camp experience are during our meeting at the valley lookout. Come with humility and a sense of respect for all who have journeyed before our generation of Hawaiian Kanaka Maoli and hawaiian immigrants.
As active farmer/arborist/gardeners, we are seeking many hands in work-play projects and welcome long stay extensions involving a hana (workplay) trade agreement. Be sure to let us know if you are interested in this option to extend your stay.
Although it may be perfectly fun and fabulous to camp in the rain, extreme rain and high flood water conditions may result in a cancelation of your reservation. In accordance with hipcamp's cancelation policy, we can refund your payment 72 hrs before your arrival date.

The Kikala Waterfall Lodge at the Mauna Kea Cloudforest Bioreserve is a lodge nested in a botanical garden and farm dedicated to the preservation of the world's plant biodiversity. Situated on the southeast facing flanks of Mauna Kea overlooking Hilo Bay and the Hamakua Coast, the bioreserve benefits of a unique climate where the lowland rainforest climate zone (Koeppen climate Zone Af) overlaps with the oceanic temperate mountain zone of Mauna Kea (Koeppen Climate Zone Cfb). The result is a cool and wet climate zone that supports many of the world's endangered palms and conifers.
The bioreserve features 14 acres of riverfront Cloud forest. The Kikala river runs through the middle of the bioreserve, so Kikala Waterfall Lodge guests on the bioreserve have private exclusive access to prime waterfalls and swimming holes. The Cloudforest bioreserve isn't just home to botanical wonders, Hawaiian native hawks and many other beautiful Hawaiian birds like to nest in the cloudforest.
The lodge community center features a Zendo that can support a contemplative yoga and meditation practice. The Bioreserve features gardens with a Japanese Zen influence to encourage a contemplative retreat experience.

We are a commercial orchid farm starting the homestead 8 years ago. Lava caused us to evacuate 2 years ago before it stopped a mile above the farm and Malama Market. We have a lava tube on the property you can explore. It’s so tall in some places, you can drive a school bus through. Good to bring headlamps if you're interested in this and just for walking around the farm when there is no moon! We are currently constructing a wood fired pizza oven in the place where our picnic tables and eating area are located.Pitch your tent or stay in one of our rooms or junglelows in the middle of our orchid nursery. We have outdoor kitchen, hot showers and flushing toilets. Located in the heart of Puna in the country but only 10 min walk to the village of Pahoa. This area has a lot to offer including tide pools, black sand beaches, warm spring and sauna caves.

Sleep under the stars on the slopes of the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa. Located at 3700’ on a 250 year old lava flow, enjoy camping in a native forested lot that is accessible by 2WD vehicle.
This is a great base location to enjoy activities on the south side of Big Island, including Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Papakolea (Green Sand Beach), Punalu’u (Black Sand Beach), and Ka Lae (South Point). Break up your island wide cruise and spend more time in scenic Ka’ū, one of the last bastions of old Hawai’i.
Mutiny Farms is 100% off-grid. There is currently no power available at either site. You will need to bring flashlights and rechargeable battery packs if you require any portable power.
The property is about a 15 minute drive to Ocean View town center, and about an hour to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Ocean View is the only community between Captain Cook and Volcano with restaurants, grocery stores, and other amenities.
There are dogs, cats, and peacocks living on the farm. There are a variety of native and food plants growing on the property. At this elevation, the climate can be quite chilly, so please come prepared for the weather.
We are happy to provide guided adventures in your personal or rental vehicle, or provide information to enhance your adventure.

Don't let your adventure stop at the national park! Come experience living in a luxurious volcano dome home where you will live in synergy with the natural exquisite surroundings. The cinder we used to build the whole dome comes from the local query produced from big island's natural volcanic features. We promise you'll lava it!

2 hours from Kona, we recommend flying into Hilo if you book the same day of your flight!
A SUV or jeep is an ideal choice when staying here as the last 500 feet (1 minute of drive time) of the drive is off-road and quite rocky. You will transverse your private entrance passing the Cassandra's (the host's) tiny house. When you arrive you will be greeted by the serene beauty of the jungle. While is isn't 100% private as the host lives next door, we can still promise a peaceful escape from the everyday world. We recommend stopping for snacks in Hilo or Keaau on the way up as those towns have more options than the sleepy Volcano Village.
Important Considerations Before Booking:
As luxurious and adventurous as Inn a Volcano is, staying in an off-grid volcano dome home in the Hawaiian jungle comes with expected 'challenges.' My goal is to give you an experience that combines Tarzan's hideout with a 5-star experience so lets get you prepped!
1. Water Source
•The tap water comes from rain catchment. It is not potable (not for drinking.) We will provide drinking water.
2. Electricity
•We're solar-powered, so please conserve energy. High voltage items like hair dryers or irons are not provided. If you bring these and use them there is a chance that the power will shut off. Please shut off lights when you leave. The windows and a skylight allows ample natural light during the day.
3. Weather
•We are located on the rainy side of the Big Island so be prepared for wet weather. Enjoy the pitter patter of rain like a playlist. Let it relax you, and don't let it dampen your plans.
4. Wildlife
•Since we are in the jungle, don't be shocked if you see bugs and insects such as moths, fruit flies, and mosquitoes.

The place is considerably more weathered than it appears in the photos, but it's unique and I'm glad we stayed there. The orchids are beautiful and the animals that roam the grounds are friendly and sweet. The lava tube, while a little tricky to access because of overgrowth at the entrance, is incredibly cool. Pahoa has a few nice restaurants to choose from and the lava tree molds park a few minutes down the road was a cool little walk. George was reliable with communication

Weekend Trip to The Kikala Waterfall Lodge
Wonderful cabin! WE loved hearing the river as we sat on the lanai and as we slept! The common-area building is fully stocked with cooking equipment, and there are two full bathrooms.
Swimming below the enarby waterfall on the property was a joy. But we were only there for less than 24 hours. I am sure there is much more!

Jo’el was a gracious host and steward of the land. We were grateful to have had the opportunity to explore this sacred land. We seen wild horses, met new friends and shared time together around the campfire. Site #1 accommodated both of our hammock setups. My organic bug spray did not work so bring the DEET or long layers.

While we had no direct interaction with our host, one of the other tenants greeted us and showed us the ropes. There are no great camping views, but the bathrooms were clean, kitchen area convenient, and a shower is always nice. Plus we are orchid geeks, so really enjoyed walking through all the tents and seeing the variety of plants. We would 100% stay here again on another visit, but it looks like the proprietor might be moving away from hosting campers.

1 night at The Kikala Waterfall Lodge
The cabins were small, pleasant places of quiet with just the river rushing past and the birds singing. Loved sitting on the front porch with my tea.
Axel was responsive when we had a small issue and it was resolved in minutes. The main lodge had a kitchen (no stove but a microwave) and 2 bathrooms with showers. Saw goats and staff working in the garden.
All in all, a nice place to rest for a couple days.

We absolutely loved staying at Hale lo! We arrived at night so the property was very dark, enough to have really good stargazing. Looking for the cabin in the dark was an adventure in itself! As we were walking around, the coquis were singing and we could hear the river running next to our cabin once we found it. The beds were comfy. My son especially loved sleeping in the loft bed! The waterfall is stunning and we wished we had time to spend a few days and explore the land a bit more!

I loved staying at Campsite #4! There's a shelter above you, plus a picnic table and a chair on the site. The property has 2 toilets and 2 showers, and an open air kitchen. The property has lots of flowers and fruit trees, as well as the orchids. There is also a resident dog and a few cats. The animals are all awesome. The people are good too, especially the owner, George. Town is about a mile down the road, so it's off the beaten path but still convenient.
