Where to go
Canaveral National Seashore
Canaveral National Seashore showcases nearly 58,000 acres of coastal land, from lagoons and islands to the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a 12-minute drive from Titusville to the entrance of the park, making it a convenient, must-see stop. Special-use permits are required for backcountry hiking, horseback riding, and backcountry camping, while only 25 hiking permits are issued each day on a first-come, first-served basis. The 14 backcountry campsites are reservable but can only be accessed by kayaks or flat motorized boats suitable for navigating shallow lagoons.
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
Within the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Kennedy Space Center offers an out-of-this-world look into space exploration. The Visitor Complex boasts numerous displays and exhibits, as well as two IMAX theaters (buy tickets ahead of time to avoid waiting in line). Reserving a Titusville campsite or yurt with picnic tables, firepits, and flush toilets means it’ll only be a 20-minute drive to the entrance.
